Is it worth getting one of these if you have a firestick and a steam link already? Is it a worthy upgrade or not?

Too expensive IMHO. Especially the 500gb model!

I use both (in different rooms, obviously), the lag on the fire stick kills me in comparison to the Shield. If it wasn't for the fact that the rooms with the fire sticks are for what I'd call 'casual' viewing, I'd have already ripped them both out in favour of a Shield.

The capabilities of the shield are clearly far greater, if it's in a HT setting (e.g. HD audio, 4K HDR) if that's relevant. If not, I still prefer how the Shield doesn't try to push you to Amazon's content.

I don't think it's too expensive per se, but I do think they're missing a trick by not selling one bundled with the remote only for ~£30 less. I get that they want to get users thinking about Geforce Now, but I should imagine there are plenty of them that are either not the slightest bit interested in gaming on the Shield, and others that don't have the fairly hefty connection to support it (hi :/ )

The delay on the firestick annoys me so that would certainly be welcome, as would 4K & HDR.

Would gaming be improved compared to the Steam Link?

One can work around the lack of 3D support fairly cheaply by also using a Raspberry Pi 3 that runs Kodi. But the lack of Dolby Vision is much more annoying, especially as (I believe) this is one of the few devices that offers 24Hz playback for Netflix. (The Chromecast Ultra will give you DV on Netflix, but only at 60Hz).

Saw the gen 1 on HUKD for £99 instore at GAME (not sure if nationwide) - seems like that may still be an excellent option

I sold my fire tv box and bought the new shield yesterday mainly because I wanted a device that will get amazon and Netflix 4K with HDR to my Epson projector.

only had a quick play last night but it seemed to drop into UHD and HDR play on amazon prime immediately rather than waiting a couple of minutes for the fire box to buffer up to 4K SDR.

you have to go in to google play store and update the Netflix ap before HDR 4K Netflix enabled but once done the shield played daredevil in 4K HDR pretty much immediately.

loading KODI and a build was a doddle.

so far very impressed and if you want HDR then well worth it over a fire tv box in my view.

Then another 40 notes for the remote

@Mark Hodgkinson Thanks for the review - have I got this right you need to manually set the frame rate everytime you enter a different app i.e. different for netflix to iplayer?

How easy is it to do it - and if you dont what happens - frame skipping?

Also how well did it play feeding 4k material non HDR 8/10 bit material - did you try that ??
      Thanks

BBC iplayer should be installed out of the box.
There is no CH5,CH4, or ITV catch up apps tho.

I would be on board with this, but at this price point and the fact I'm nowhere near ready to spend 1500£ on a new AVR.

I would require/demand dual HDMI output.

I think he meant if you bought the mark 1 shield second hand then you would have to buy the remote on top

I haven't looked for it yet - is it just a case of loading the iplayer app from the google store?

The first version had it installed out of the box.
BBC iplayer should be in the App store.

Is there anything in 4K and HDR on Netflix, seems they don't tag it as both or it doesn't exist or my Samsung Tv is being weird.

Thanks, good to know - I kinda found it odd them leaving the ultra hd bit out of the tag.

Couldn't tell you. I've thought the streaming was a nice to have and that I would give it a try at some point, but never have. The GPU in my desktop ins't really a powerhouse at any rate (Quadro K4100M) and I do most gaming on a PS4.

Is all HDR Netflix also 4K? I'm not sure. Some of the 4K stuff like 'A series of Unfortunate Events' is meant to be HDR but is only 4k.

Might be a regional thing - I think I read somewhere that if there is not enuff bandwidth you get HDR but not 4K it'll drop back to 1080p - but if I can get 4K....

      Anyone actually know about this?

edit: Just checked with Netflix - you get one or the other, not both at the same time.. bloody knew it!

It really doesn't. It bitstreams info like everything else and the apps are as good as any smart TV or media box Please don't spread unfounded misinformation.

What do you mean by one or the other - 4K or HDR?

That's not how it works on my K8500, some of the shows are in 4K and others are in 4K/HDR. The latter show as HDR in the menu, but definitely carry the higher resolution as well.

I didn't think you could even get true HDR in lower resolutons?

On my 2016 Samsung TV nothing is in 4K and HDR - its either 4K or HDR. Please take a snap shot of your Netflix app, showing something tagged with both.

When I asked Netflix this they confirmed you don't get both at the same time. Apparently you can still have HDR without the 4K with bandwidth constraints, don't ask me where I read it tho, it could well be cobblers.*

*Where nothing in the show list is displayed as 4K.

You can get get HDR in 1080 and 4k. Amazon and netflix will both fall back to 1080 if necessary and the only thing you will lose is the resolution. On netflix, Knights of sidonia actually appears to be 1080 HDR. In the netflix menu screen it will say HDR. And it is 4k (excluding the above). Just press the info button when you're playing a stream and it will show the resolution.

You could get away with 60Hz for most things, it 'smooths' 23.976/24fps reasonably well - not that I would advise it- but iPlayer you definitely would want at 1080p50. It's easy enough to adjust refresh rate but it would be preferable if you didn't have to.

Yes, 8/10-bit UHD plays well. As I said in the review, we will publish full test video/audio results in the next few weeks once the dust has settled and the relevant media software has been updated.

The NVIDIA iPlayer app is definitely in the Play Stor

Yes, there's a few HDR series on Netflix - mostly mentioned below your post. If you're not seeing 4K/HDR tags at the same time, it's likely that Netflix is gauging that your internet connection isn't up to it at that time. Yes, it is possible to watch HDR from Amazon and Netflix that isn't in UHD resolution

On my television at least, that's just how they tag HDR shows.
