    Hi All,

Have seen the advertised specs for the relatively new GF6 range of cards. Apparently they have specialised features for DVD/Hi def material playback. Has anybody tried one of these cards yet, and if so how do they compare to radeons for HTPC performance?

    Cheers

Are you referring to the 6600s? These are the same as the older 6800s except that WMV playback acceleration now works, it's broken in the 6800, DVD playback works in all 6xxx cards.

The answer from my experience is yes, a 6800 is better than my old 9600, in part because NVidia is better at VMR rendering while ATI is better for Overlay, with VMR you can apply things like AA and AF to improve PQ.

    Hi Kragorn,

Thanks for the reply. I have been looking at either a 6600GT or a 6800LE, but am currently leaning towards the 6800 card as it is supposedly better for running the latest games at 1280x1024 (which is my current monitor resolution) with some AA/AF. The problem with WMV files, is this still true for the latest cards?

    Cheers

AFAIK all 6800s are broken but the situation is a bit unclear largely because NVidia have been considerably less than frank about the problem.

AIUI it's the NV40 chip that's broken, the 6600 uses an NV41. I believe there is to be a replacement 6800 using the NV43 but as yet that's unnanounced.

From my POV the lack of WMV-HD acceleration is academic, there are very few titles available in WMV-HD as yet and it's not a format that interestes me because more and more they won't play in anything other than Windows Media player due to DRM games M$ are playing (the latest releases such as Underwrold etc. won't play in TheaterTek or ZoomPlayer) .. as and when HD DVD (of either flavour) comes out then maybe the sitatuation will change.

BTW, I think I'd recommend a GT rather than an LE for performance reasons but admittedly they're a bit more expensive.
