Kinabalu mountain 'nudists': Tourists in Malaysia court - BBC News
No more insane than American preachers blaming natural disasters on gays, I suppose.

Clearly, blaming them 'angering the gods' is nonsense.
    But it's irrelevant.
They have completely disrespected somewhere the locals consider 'sacred'.
I believe, but stand to be corrected, the charge and possible 3 month sentence they face merely reflects the disrespect shown and they would have faced the same charge even if the earthquake hadn't happened?

The original story I read stated the tourists ignored and taunted their Mountain Guides plea for them not to get naked on the mountain as it was against local custom. So I can understand why the Guide reported them. Tourists should respect local rules and customs. Blaming them for an earthquake is another matter..

Clearly, if they were actually being blamed for the earthquake, then they would also be facing charges of murder/manslaughter for the 18 people that died.
They're not, they're merely facing charges for the actual offence made.

Idiots. Why do people think they can go to another country and ignore their customs and respects?

Which is fine if there are signs up there warning not to disrespect the spirits.
Otherwise, if it's just a natural spot out in the countryside, then any local could claim any old lunacy to stop people from enjoying nature however they like in any non destructive way.
Being nude in front of non-consenting people is a different story.
Disrespecting a man-made place (like, say, a church) is a different story.
But I don't think we have to pander to superstitions when it comes to enjoying the natural world.

Put another way. If you're unseen by anyone else, not hurting anyone else and not damaging anything, then is there a problem?

If they were told not to do it by the guides but did it anyway then they deserve all the get as far as I am concerned. As said above, if you go to another country then you abide by their rules. If you do not agree with their rules then do not visit their country.
People here complain about other nationalities who come here not living by our rules so why is it different when we go over to them!!!!!!!

This is a mountain that they needed a Guide to climb, on the way down they undressed in front of him and allegedly swore at him then went on to openly urinate too. The guide certainly wasn't consenting, in fact the opposite, so this wasn't an unseen act, worse, they were warned that their actions would not be tolerated before hand.

If they were ignorant of the significance of the mountain, I'd have some sympathy for their somewhat odd desire to get nekkid.
But the facts seem to be they were fully aware and chose to ignore.
    So pay the penalty.

Then they have no defence against the indecency charge.
If they apologise to it, maybe the mountain spirit will forgive them.

Why is a sacred mountain actually different to a sacred church? What if it was say the crash site of a major air disaster from a few decades ago?

I agree that the 'where' doesn't matter.
I see a meaningless chunk of desert, native Americans see an ancient burial ground.
It's whether I know its significance or not beforehand that determines whether I pee against the cactus.
If I pee against the cactus knowing it's a burial ground, I cannot complain if I take big heap tomahawk up mountain pass.

Indeed, I read that the original punishment for this is a fine of 10 cows, so fine them 10k or whatever and all should be well. Talk of 3 months jail may be taking things a little far, but then, I doubt they'll ever do it again..

This story reminds me of all the silly people you regularly hear about who get themselves arrested in Thailand for insulting the King.
    You're a guest in someone else's country..just don't do it!

Indecent exposure in the UK carries a sentence of up to 24 months in jail, so maybe they are getting off lightly.

    Rant starts:

Many countries have people who believe gods or spirits live in mountains and those entities are treated with a great deal of reverence by the locals.

Some foreign well-educated fools from a 'civilised' country then disdainfully disregard local beliefs and customs and behave in a fashion which highlights their closed-minds and blinkered attitude.

They live in a sweet little safe over-privileged twilight world which they think is their playground. One day reality will pay a visit, hopefully without an AK47.

Stupid behaviour which reflects back on us all.

    Rant over.

Went to Borneo a few years back and was expected the island to be nothing but rain forest with orangutang's and little in the way of development. You could image our surprise when went into the local town to find a very large shopping centre and fast food restaurants aplenty  Still a beautiful place though.

oh have no sympathy for them, what numpty goes naked in a islamic country!

IMO, if you go to a foreign Country, you respect their local customs, religion etc. You don't need someone or an inanimate sign telling you that. You respect that Country just like you would want someone coming here to respect our Country.

If you went to Dubai on holiday with your boyfriend/girlfriend (so unmarried) and kissed in public and got caught, what is your defence going to be, "Sorry Sir, I didn't see a sign".

Visiting any country you should do your research as to their customs and beliefs and respect them. Same as anybody visiting this country.
I'd wager that but pretty much all countries wouldn't allow you to strip naked in a public place and common sense would tell you this.

Seems like it's a bit of a non-story, the British Girl's family has said she should face charges for what she has done, but are concerned in case it's now taken too far. Perhaps she should have thought about that before doing it.
