I was watching R1 Toy Story 2 last night and immediately noticed the lack of resolution on the 4:3 TV i was using. I know this was mainly due to the wasted resolution taken up by the widescreen black bars. What surprised me however was when i changed the player output setting from "Auto" to "Pal". The picture became noticably sharper (although the colours were slightly different). What exactly is going on here? Is the player doing some fancy conversion and guessing what the info in the missing lines for Pal resolution would be. I was using an RGB scart connection.
As i understood it, the Pal/Auto/NTSC switch on most dvd players only changed the colour carrier type for non component/RGB connections.

    Cheers
