I'm new to DV cams and am thinking of getting a digital camcorder when I go to the US and want to know:

Will a NTSC only camcorder record on to DV tapes bought in the UK ?

Is there any loss of quality ?

Where's the cheapest place to buy DV tapes in the UK ?

Yes an NTSC camcorder will record onto tape brought in England, but are you sure you want an NTSC camcorder? while you will be able to watch your videos on your computer your not going to be able to connect your camcorder direct to your TV to watch your video.

Remember also that Customs and Excise may need a sizable chunk of money to allow you to import the camera, and what are you going to do about warranty if something goes wrong, I don't think an English branch is going to honour your US purchase.

I've got to agree with Beejaycee

Importing a camcorder from the USA will not save you that much money as internet retailers can offer some very good prices, and as said, if you get caught by customs on your way home you will have to pay inport duty & VAT so will probably end up costing more.
You will also not be able to copy your footage onto a VCR and any disk you create on a PC will still be in NTSC and that may cause more problems. Most TV's though should be able to show your footage without any problems, but as I say not a VCR.

If you do decide to buy in the USA then shop around as you can often get PAL camcorders there. But IMHO this is still not a good idea.

I dont think you have to worry about import V.A.T do you. If you have the camera open i.e no box around your neck or in hand luggage, how will the customs people know you did not take it with you when you left the U.K

If they even suspect it is new they will demand to see your receipt for proof of purchase, I always carry the receipt for my camera even though it's three years old now and have been asked to show it especially in eastern europe countries.
