Does the Optical Audio Out on the back of the Sky HD box provide the 5.1 sound. I've never used the optical to be honest and have always connected through Coaxial. :lease:

Yes it can carry any audio that is broadcast.
It does exactly the same job as a coaxial digital audio link does on other products:)

Yes it does although the HDMI should also carry multichannel sound if your amp can support it and one less cable too.

Thanks guys. I appreciate it. I thought so but wasn't entirely sure. I was contemplating replacing my Pioneer VSX-C501-S with a new receiver so that HDMI could be used for both my DVD Player and SkyHD. Might be the best option for me.

    Cheers again.

Can anyone suggest a suitable amp and surround sound set-up for SKy HD.

To be honest, the fewer cables the better, I'd even consider some sort of virtual surround set-up if it offered 70%+ of the sound quality.

Value for money is more important than the best quality.

    Any help much appreciated.

You'll get your 5.1 via the HDMI according to Sky!

HDMI carries audio so yeah they are right but of course you need an amp which accepts HDMI and they are still thin on the ground and most people with 5.1 systems have amps which accept optical or coaxial digital which is just as good.

TV's usually don't have optical audio.. not a lot of point as there's only two speakers on a TV right next to each other (they don't have coaxial digital either).

Best to ask that in the appropriate forum to be honest, far more likely to get attention.
