Noob - Dumbest question of all?

I'm in the market for and AV Amp and been looking at a Yamaha 759 and Sony 1200 and 3200 models etc.

Here it comes.......

If the amp is classed as a 7:1 or a 6:1 can it also operate as a 5:1? In other words, can you set up am amp that is capable of 6:1 as a 5:1? I know that this is a bit of a waste but her-indoors will have a heart attack when I place 6 speakers in the room. Before I go the whole hog, I thought I'd go gentle at the start!

I wouldn't worry about asking 'dumb' questions...they're usually easy to answer

As replied above, yes - it'll work with 5.1 no problem.

You might want to consider the Onkyo amps in your deliberations as well...they're quite popular in the price bracket you're thinking of.
