No Time to Die 4K Blu-ray Review & Comments

Watched this last night. First time I've had my projector and AV system on 'in anger' for ages as we had some friends round to watch it with us. I sat off to the side as a courtesy to give our friends the prime seat, so maybe some of the Atmos effects were a bit off due to this; some bits where Bond was talking via an earpiece sounded like they came from directly above me (I was sat below the front top speaker) and seemed really 'off' compared with the action...I'll have to take another listen from the main seat.

I thought the picture looked really good; HDR2020 dynamically tone mapped via my Lumagen into a JVC X7500 in a properly blacked out room...pretty much reference I'd say, though maybe I was just wowed as I'd forgotten how good content can look on the big screen after so long not using it.

Plenty of bass on the soundtrack too in places (the typical nightclub scene with thumping bass surprised our guests with the bass from 2x15" subs and a bass shaker under their seat :D).

I won't comment on the plot, but it was entertaining enough, though apart from checking the Atmos bit I mentioned above, I doubt I'll watch it again, at least for a long time (unless we have other guests who want to watch it I guess). That's more an indication of why I don't use my set up much though as I don't tend to re-watch films unless years apart and there's not much I want to watch these days.

As a kid my Dad used to take me to watch Bond films when I went to visit him (I lived with my Mum), so I have many happy memories of the Roger Moore era watching them with him. The night before his funeral we stopped at a hotel and had a walk along the sea front to go for a drink. We walked past one of the cinemas he used to take me to and of course, this was when NTTD was showing...very fitting and I'm sure he'd have chuckled about the irony/timing of this showing. I think he'd have enjoyed it.

Apologies if this has been asked already, but I deliberately skipped reading most of this thread in fear of spoilers or having other peoples views influence my own before watching...

... but has any one compared the UHD disc quality to an ATV 4K stream from itunes, undecided whether to buy on disc or download.

I rented the iTunes version which I watched in full and have only watched the first 30 minutes or so of the physical disc, but to my eyes (and ears) the physical disc was better.

I thought it was dreadful. Total waste of Remi Malek and Christoph Waltz, who's characters aren't developed at all. Then there's the hour long narrative that goes nowhere. Q is cooking a meal for his boyfriend, who never turns up. What was the point in that? Lashana Lynch as 007 has the acting skills of the Woodentops. No wonder
Bond wanted to die at the end,
probably fed up of playing the babysitter. Indeed, we were all fed up after almost 3 hours of this.
Highlights. Ana de Arnas in Cuba. Short cameo but could easily make a Jane Bond 006. David Densik as the nutty professor, totally absorbed with his weapon and the only real character development in the whole film. Finally Cyclops had some good bits.

It sure is interesting how so many peoples opinions vary around the world.
For me and like so many this film was immensely enjoyable and emotional.
The moment with Q was charming and humouros. I don't see why we had to see the boyfriend. Christoph Waltz had a much better role of Blofield in this film, more like Hannibal and kind of creepier. His lines were much better. And finally Rami Malik was a villain you can sort of have sympathy for, he has meaning in what he says whether or not his scheme is irrelevant or not. Could have used him more in the film but he says enough to establish himself.

Definitely up there with Casino Royale.
It makes sense to use the book YOLT as the template and using the movie and book OHMSS as a parallel universe for Craig's final. Kind of clever I think.

Leaves it open especially at the end when Madeline says at the end as she starts to tell her story about James Bond.
This could then start the next movie with one of his earlier adventures in his life and progress along.

Or better still Bond miraculously survives.
But I believe the former may be the better way of producing the upcoming movies.

Good post @jonam
Might want to add a wee spoiler tag on your last paragraph in case some come on here before watching the film.

@jonam you need to put plots in spoiler tags mate. Some may not have seen this

Finally received my copy and watched it last night, maybe not the best Bond film but still enjoyable and not to be taken to seriously :smashin:. Does anyone take any of Bond movies seriously???

Well yeah, the Craig bonds do take themselves seriously to a point.

Watched it for first time on 4k UHD, great visual disc and good audio.

For me an extremely weak Bond movie that was quite dull. Felt like a "need to wrap this all up neatly in a bow as it's Craig's last".

Terrible Villain, massive plotholes, weak new characters just for visual appeal (Ana), dull action that other than the Motorcycle jump wasn't exciting, and the "run up the Tower" that was Bond doing John Wick-Lite. Totally unnecessary ending that basically sh*t on the Snow setup of this film and last.

6/10 as a curiosity.

Best to Worst:
Casino Royale, Skyfall, Quantum, No Time To Die, Spectre (far far far in the distance).

In fact the more I think about this one the more annoyed I feel :thumbsdow about it.

Definitely needs a reboot.

For me spectre in particular was a real tragedy. I thought NTTD was decent but I agree , looking at Casino Royale and Skyfall (which were both superb) it’s a bit of a shame for the rest as Craig (for me) was a superb 007

My ranking is a bit unconventional, but here it is:

1) No Time to Die
2) Skyfall
3) Casino Royale
4) Quantum of Solace
5) Spectre

In Casino Royale the poker playing as boring to me, I understand it was supposed to be tense. Also I didn't like the torture scene at all.

Spectre was just boring for most of the film and forgettable.

Even more so mine
1) Casino Royale
2) No Time To Die
3) Specter
4) Quantum of Solace
5) Skyfall

Would have placed Quantum of Solace higher but for the editing.

Got a real urge to watch Spectre again now and then watch this again!

For now my rating would be -

1) Casino Royale
2) Skyfall
3) No Time To Die
4) Spectre
5) Quantum of Solace

Nice. For me, 1 / 2 / 3 stays the same. 4 & 5 swapped.

The audio for me was odd. Daniel Craig’s voice was slightly muffled ?? Everyone else was fine but no idea why

Edit…..sorted

1. Casino Royal.

2-5 The Rest.

I watched this again today with friends and without the weight of expectation to interfere with my opinion it was a more enjoyable experience. Bond’s relationship with Madeline still didn’t have anything like the chemistry I felt he had with Vesper but the film as a whole was a great waste of a couple of hours, particularly with the disc itself being so good.

Sad ending. Nice to see an emotional bond for a change. I was expecting an endgame style send off but fair play to the writers. Going to be hard to replace Craig.

Major weakness for me was the portrayal of the Villain.

PQ - 9/10 - The IMAX camera scenes looked terrific. Nice to see a nice layer of film grain on the rest.
AQ - 7/10 - Static mix but never felt like object based mix. Just 4 places where overhead channels are used. Bass was on a the lighter side as well.

Watched it when the disc arrived around Christmas and thought it a mess. Was advised to re-watch Spectre before re-watching NTTD - this worked - it then makes much more sense.

Yet another movie I couldn’t finish. This is getting to be habit now, my patience for bad movies has worn thin.

Now I’m not the biggest Bond fan, but I like the old Connery run and I have a soft spot for The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker because I saw them in a double bill at the cinema when I was about 10, so I have bit of nostalgia for them. Casino Royale was good, Skyfall was tolerable and Spectre was an absolute turd. This one was even worse because at least I made it all the way though Spectre.

This was just so boring, I’m baffled by the praise for it. I was already nodding off just because of the dreary theme song. The action was bland, the characters, unlikeable, especially Craig’s geriatric bug-eyed Bond, and the stakes just didn’t matter to me. When Rami Malek’s villain appeared, apparently even more bored with the proceedings than me, I decided I had seen enough. I doubt I will ever be curious enough to watch the end, but I have left it so long it’s impossible to avoid spoilers, so I don’t need to.

I made it to the end but when it came up with "James Bond will return" my thought was I'd rather he didn't if this is the best they can do.

Random thoughts:
  • audio is superb, especially when the DB5 is getting shot up in the town square
  • if you want to go into the Norwegian forest, take a Land Rover; if you want to come out, take a Land Cruiser
  • what was Hugh Dennis doing in it?
  • I want a Series 3 Land Rover again
  • Bond fighting his way to the top of the tower felt like watching someone else play Call of Duty
  • it's about 45 minutes too long, especially that CoD sequence and the Spectre party
  • why did the civil servant leave the retiree to open the blast doors?

Your comment about the Land Rover is spot on. I remember when the film came out, seeing Land Rover do their tie in promotion with NTTD. My first thought was that Land Rover got a bum deal, because all the movie established was how easy they were to topple over!
