No PS3 Super Slim at Gamescom?

Those hoping Sony might officially announce their new PlayStation 3 Super Slim at the Gamecsom conference (an event they've previously used to unveil hardware revisions) are likely to be disappointed, if whispered reports to VG24/7 are to be believed.

Widely assumed to be the final form of Sony's PS3 before the next generation of consoles hits, the unit (PS3-4000) will be smaller, lighter and consume less power than previous models. The standard slot loading disc drive will also be gone and in its place will be an old-school flip lid.

Now it appears the furtive reports of the use of a mere 16Gb in a base model (larger capacities are expected) were indeed true, and that flash memory will be utilised.

It should retail at a cheaper price point and give the PS3 one last sales hurrah, with bundles including classic games likely to be pushed, becoming accessible to the casual crowd who've thus far shied away.
