What a shame. You could always rely on M&M for something brainless to watch after a night at the pub. :(

This is terrible! When there was nowt on the 'proper' channels, you could rely on M&M for Chopper Coppers or Crimefighters, always good for a self-righteous laugh. The b*stards! :suicide:

Not sure why you are blaming SKY, they don't own or operate the channel.

ITV4 at least according to ITV will be a male orientated channel with a mixture of US and UK drama, sport, movies and documentaries.
Sounds a promising addition to the multichannel line up on Dsat and DTT.

SKY have no legal right to stop a channel (with a UK broadcast license) from asking for and receiving an EPG slot (Set price ok'd by OFCOM) and take it further if a channel doesn't want an EPG slot then SKY has no influence over it's ability to broadcast FTA to the UK.
In this respect Digital Satellite is a far more open platform then either cable or terrestrial.
The only time SKY has a direct say in a channel appearing on the EPG is when the owner of the channel wants to use Videoguard or be included in a subscription package.

So if ITV4 was a brand new channel once it had got a license then ITV would have asked for another EPG slot, paid the fee and got put on the list for the next update. However since ITV4 is a replacement for M&M the EPG slot already exists, the same situation applied to Granada Plus when it turned in ITV3.

I think the biggest loss to me was the ending of DOT TV (the computer channel).

Agreed mate, they could have binned ITV1,ITV2 or ITV3 instead of M&M - ITV don't have enough content to fill one channel never mind 4
Men & Motors isn't only T&A there's the TT races coverage which was great and some good rally stuff as well.

I can't say I'm that bothered by the loss of men and Motors, besides the minor channels come and go with regular frequency *shrugs*

I still cry myself to sleep over the demise of .tv; Masterclass, Chips With Everything. The staple diet of a geek. Of which I am proud to be one.

    Hi,

M&M isn't that big a loss to me either, although they do show "Miami Vice" (which used to be on Granada Plus).

Also, you may want to know that M&M is now a free-to-air channel on Sky, until the end of its Sky EPG slot in November.

The end of .tv brought tears to my eyes and still does. It was a two hour daily ritual for me. Kate Russell, Will Hanrahan, the 10ft Masterclass touch screen. TV nirvana. What I would do for some kind of technology programme.

I used to enjoy .tv as well. Was the bloke's name Topping or something like that who used to do some of the masterclasses ? Then there was the panel who answered questions with the saucy blond bird ;)

On the panel or asking questions? If questions it was Kate Russell.

    Richard Topping the other name?

Both Kate and the guy who presents the show with Will H, who Will made fun of can be seen in Click Online on the BBC early Saturday mornings and on the BBC News Channel. The guy also writes columns for the computer press such as PCW.

I quite liked the Leggy brunet who started out presenting, and ended up with the 2 silly sods in roman outfit asking computer questions.

    ITV 4?

I can't even see how they can justify ONE channel let alone FOUR!!

    What a waste of bandwidth!

    Welcome to the multichannel future:)

ITV know that they are going to get a hammering come analogue switch off with their huge analogue coverage advantage for ITV1 being wiped out.
To counter this shrinking of the advertising pie they have decided to offer more channels and while all the ITV channels will get lower viewing figures taken as a whole they hope the advertising revenues will at least be held at the levels that can achieve now.

I suppose the same sort of thing applies to the BBC who while not going for ratings as such have made more niche channels looking to gain viewers who do not watch BBC1 and BBC2 and prepare for a time when they have no government granted advantage over the majority of other broadcasters.
