There has been no upgrade to 1740/1940 which are few years old now (despite the fact that they miss for example USB port which is common now) ... maybe they have been literally phased out since they do not show up in some Denon's web sites ... .

Maybe Denon will concentrate only on BR/Universal players?

Thanks to anyone willing to share info!

I would not be surprised if Denon stopped selling DVD players. BD players, with excellent DVD upscaling, are now cheaper than the Denon DVD players were.
Looking at this DVD forum, and the lack of contributions, I'm afraid the good old DVD is on its way out.

Practically this means that Denon doubles (+/-) the entry point to its players ... but probably that's a calculated risk (no chance to compete in DVD market anymore with other brands due to the price squeezing ...)

What about the 1740? I could have it for less than half the list price (ex-demo unit): that is, -/+, what std player out there cost nowadays (Sony, Pioneer, ...).

What I am interested in is upscaling capability: having just bought a 50" TV I need to subsitute an aged (SCART) yet good Sony player. Friend just bought a new Sony 728 and I would say it's pretty good in upscaling (for example, a lot better than an LG BR player - not sure about the model).

Upscaling wise, any info about how the 1740 compares to other players that live in the range < 100€ (Pio, sony, Pana, ...)?

    Thanks!

The 1740 is a very solid and high quality player like the 1940, upscaled images
from these DVD players are at best level so dont worry !

    Other choices you can consider are;

    Onkyo DV-SP406 (amazing upscaling)
Pioneer DV-410 (natural skin tones and HDMI 1.3)

Denon and Marantz are HDMI 1.1 but that doesnt affect DVD picture:hiya:

Didn't know Pio were good upscalers ... but the 410 looks like discontinued in favour of the 420: is this as good as its predecessor? (We all know unfortunately it can very well happen that newer products are actually worst!) Marantz players, instead, not that common in Italy (harder to find in physical stores).

    Thanks & Best Wishes!:hiya:

Well ... done the homework and checked out the Pio: 410 can still be easily found and there's the 420 of course. Browsed thru forums here & there looks like there are some internal differences in the chipsets ... someone seems to prefer the one of 410, upscaling-wise ... any clue about ?

I also found opinions of people preferring the Sony in terms of upscaling (uses own chips apparently and not Mediatek) but maybe personal bias towards specific brands come in to play

I will forward the "bambino" to the kid --> who is quickly becoming the actual, absolute, undisputed owner of all the HT stuff!!! :hiya:

hehehehe, the newest is the DV-420 and the DV-220 ; the 420 is far better due to Surround button
if you re in a HD Ready tv upscaling is good enough

Actually it's a 50" plasma (LG PK 780) FHD so upscaling really matters ....

Glad to see you are in the plasma camp too!
