I'm sure you all think "yeah, right!" with a sarcastic smile when reading the thread title, but that's the truth.

Without dragging the story for too long, I have decided 3 months ago to stop drinking for around 3 months. Now, I should mention here, I'm no alcoholic, or even a very heavy drinker. Normally I'd only had a few beers usually one evening of the week (Friday or Saturday) and rarely get drunk at all, but I like beer and enjoy its taste.

Anyway, more and more often I was getting the worst possible hangovers on the planet (remember, I wasn't even drunk the night before). I'll save you the details, but let's just say the next day I was dying and could not drink anything (not even water) or eat anything or even unable to get up from the bed for the next 24 hours with a fever and a massive headache and dizziness. Very unpleasant. And lately it happened more and more often. I could have 4 pints in the space of 4 or 5 hours (hardly much) and the next day would be terrible.

So 3 months ago I said enough is enough and stopped drinking altogether. The plan was to wait until Xmas time, let the body recover a bit from whatever that is and have a little drink then and see where I am. Well, I've had few beers on Friday night first time in months. It was a little bit of an occasion as one of my mates was here for a short period and I've not seen him a long time. There was a few of us there and I've about 6 x 33cl beers in the space of the evening (from 6pm to 11pm). Wasn't drunk and was hoping it should be alright the next day.

It wasn't. I was dying today big time. All day. I was only able to get up from the bed around 6pm. With nothing to drink and no food with a massive headache I was hardly a good company though. First meal I've had around 8pm. Now am still a bit shaky but much better. Anyway. I think it is time. I think my body is trying to tell me something... so:

Goodbye beer.

Don't drink as much then and drink other fluids inbetween.

Have you thought about seeing your GP? Having such severe hangovers after consuming a relatively small amount of alcohol might be indicative of some other health issue.

Could this be some kind of other intolerance, wheat, hops, gluten etc? As mentioned above speak with a GP as it seems unusual

There's a medical reason why your body is struggling so much to process alcohol. Book an appointment asap.

Yes, I have. But I am perfectly fine when I don't drink. Besides GP's around here only give you paracetamol... for anything and everything, so it is a waste of time really.

It's really not.

They will test your liver, it's easily done. Get to the GP asap.

I am giving the booze up after Christmas.
And as others have said, I would get that checked out. Could be a serious liver/kidney issue. If your Gp is not interested then ask for a second opinion

I'm guessing you mean liver. I've had problem with it as a child, so alcohol was not recommended to me at all. I don't really think it is a problem if I stop drinking.

C'mon, that's hardly "much" for a big guy.

Depends I'm 6ft 4, and I'd be done with that xD, depends what your tolerance is.

What's the point of the thread then?

Go and see a GP, and then another maybe? You've highlighted a potential problem and stated you aren't drinking again, ever.

This thread could be drawing to a close quickly tbh. I hope you don't get the side effects again.

I don't really see a problem here, but if it causing any headaches (no pun intended) then feel free to close / delete or whatever. The thread was meant to be lighthearted and not about my health problems if I'm honest.

Thanks.

"Goodbye beer" is the point of the thread.

Edit your original post so it starts with words along the lines of "I was diagnosed with a liver problem as a child and was told not to drink alcohol." Then read the thread from start to finish.

Really fudgeing weird thread, unsubbed.

I've also given up.

I've never been much of a drinker, I do like a nice whiskey and enjoy a few beers socially. Over the past year I've noticed my tolerance to alcohol fall quite a lot. I was at my works xmas party a few weeks ago and I had 2 pints and about 3 bottles of beer over a 5hr period and I felt awful the next day, to be honest I didn't feel completely right until a week later. That was the last straw for me. I've never thought about an underlying health issue, maybe it is worth seeing a doctor.

It's the same for me. I don't see any problems in day to day stuff when I don't drink. Looks like alcohol is causing me some problems so I'll stop the occasional beer.

Tbh alcohol can be an emotive subject and although it was intended as light hearted subject matter, it became a medical issue (potentially).

I'll leave it open for now as it may motivate others (myself included) to abstain for a while

I cant stand the taste of alcohol it makes me gag, also whilst married my ex would glug 8 to 12 medium cans per night untill unconscious just after the crankiness or during all of a sudden zonk so that also put me off....
I have never enjoyed going to pubs or clubs and thus have hardly ever been in them and a group of drinking people would have to socialise without me!!!
Just because its legal people think its the norm to alter their state of mind and that I am weird!!!!
Would they take heroin willy nilly if that was legalised????

I gave up nearly three weeks ago.

I realised I had lost the ability to drink moderately ( albeit mostly at weekends ) and that my drinking self was more of an alter ego than the real me.

I also realised I was losing too much quality time to alcohol or recovering from drinking alcohol.

So far so good. I managed to stay out until 2 am with my mates last weekend (who were all sozzled.).

I felt even better the next day when I started getting the texts saying how hung over everyone was.

I like a drink but I'm fortunate where I can take it or leave it. I've had some crazy nights and some casual ones. On the crazy ones I'm rough until lunchtime then perfectly fine. Usually after a couple of pasties and a coffee.

I think everyone is different. At the end of the day we're ingesting poison. How we each deal with it is specific to each person.

Whatever helps lol

Don't really see the point in this thread, I would seriously seeing a doctor if that happened to me.

Drinking water in between drinks should help your hangover (it is after all just dehydration).

Love a wee drink or night out and get tipsy (the fun loving drunk stage lmao). Like @Kieron I'm the same, I can take it or leave it but have had many crazy nights (some told to me the next day lmfao).

Thankfully I don't get hangovers, in my near 15 years of drinking I've only had 4 hangovers thankfully lol
