No green or blue lights?

i have picked up a cheap 40gb old stile PS3 in need of a new laser, but i have a strange problem, i get the red standby light but when switched on i get no lights at all even with a disc in, it powers up the xmb fine, can they be switched off and on in the menus like some blu ray players can or is it a fault?

You can't switch it off from the conventional menu from what I know. It seems to be a fault.

is there anything i can do about it as its annoying me, i don't want to put in a new drive if this is the start of a serious fault on the way.
