I got a rift and tried it out on a few games. Didn't like not being able to just look behind me and see my wife behind me at her computer or the kids when they walked in and asked a question. Didn't like having the bulk of the big sweaty head gear making me uncomfortable.
I bought 4 of them so we could all use it, but none of the others n the family liked it any better than I did and for the same reasons.
They now sit in a drawer with the 3D glasses for our 3D tv that also never caught on with us.
As it is currently, it just isn't very impressive to us.
It was ok for a few minutes, but not anything worth using a lot. Like the Kinect, it was fun for a short time and then doesn't get much if any use.

Sorry to hear that, its not for everyone.

You bought four...

Hope you get most of your investment back.

They are in a drawer. :)
We already had computers that we built together so there was not that extra cost to us.

From what your saying, it seems like you maybe missed the point of it a little. The idea behind using VR is to give you that level of immersion to the point where you feel (Or fooled to feel) like your there. Being able to turn around an see others outside of that illusion would break that sense of immersion and defeat the purpose of using VR.

That said, as you mentioned its not for everyone and it does take some time to get used to it. If you did look to get back into it, take a look for co-op and multiplayer games, theres not many but stuff like Bridge Crew is a great 4 player experience so you could essentially play together and see the people your sat with.

Thanx, guys for laughing at my pain. lol It is pretty funny actually to think VR would be something worth doing repeatedly in spite of it's obvious drawbacks. Those drawbacks were just too much to get past though.

Well I`m sorry it didn't work out for you. But I think you maybe should of tried at least one headset before shelling out on four!

Maybe a silly question, but what software/games did you try with it? As great as VR is, there is definitely more chaff than wheat out there. If you have touch, then that would have naturally given you Robo Recall, which is a pretty good showcase. Both driving games, and flight/space sims are fantastic too.

Jump on SteamVR Home or Rec Room where you see each others Avatars, all four of you could have fun exploring and doing plenty of fun stuff together.

But yeah I think VR is a bit like Snorkelling you need the motivation to put the mask on and tell yourself - no pain no gain.

If u give it a second try I'd thoroughly recommend Star Trek Bridge Crew. I've played that with my bro. while actually sat alongside him and it was awesome. 4 of you sat together playing that would be fantastic!

4 copies of that will cost ya though... Though not as much as 4 Rifts you don't like :rotfl:

Rec Room was a great suggestion. It's free and has two Quest game that are 4 player co-op. As well as disk golf, paintball, dodgeball, etc. that would be great fun with 4 of you.

But...

Got to say, not only did you buy the wrong headset, you bought the wrong headset four times

Why not try buying 4 Vives? If you're all in the same room, you can share (superior) tracking sensors, unlike the Oculus Drift. Just one of many ways the Vive justifies being double the price... re-assuringly expensive, see ;)

Surly you must have known putting a helmet with speakers etc would block your other senses. As for the Rift being bulky, After 5 min's of loan echo or Robo recall I forget I have it on. When you said you then bought 4 of them I thought this must be a joke thread. Is it ??? Am still not sure.

Oh and I am not having a go.

if you don't need them, and can't return them. You might as well sell them now. They won't be appreciating in value

I bought the wrong technology, it wasn't the brand we don't like, it's the experience of VR we don't like and unfortunately, there is no brand that doesn't use a headset yet.

I was thinking of donating them, but I want to wait to see if anyone in the family (sisters, cousins, nephews, neices, etc.) might want them. If no one else is interested, I'll donate them to charity.

that is very generous of you... pretty sure if they have the pc to run them someone in your family will want them. it amazes me no one in your direct family was interested.

out of all the gamers i know - even tho a few would not choose to buy them yet - all of them were impressed and many of them have gone on to buy headsets.

iiwy i would keep one of them at least.

So, on the off chance that you just might like VR, you bought 4........... And now they are sat in a drawer. Presumably, you only opened one of the 4, to see if you liked it or not, so the other 3 are still in their, quite large, factory-sealed boxes. How big is this drawer?

No, all four of us tried them out, that would be hard to do in the boxes unless the kids were really tiny. lol
I am sure you could have puzzled that out yourself with enough time. :)

@Alpha One Seven what games did you try? Did you play something all together? How did you enjoy the gameplay experiences? Or was gaming not your intended use?

What do the four of you play on flat screens? I'm sure we could recommend something that fits with your taste. You're giving up on this too soon, IMO. And if this is a regular event, like you suggest with 3d and such, that drawer must be huge and very full! How did you fit all the Guitar Hero instruments in there? :rotfl:

Still... You bought 4 . That's £1600 down. I would be trying to claw some of that back and taking my family away for a long weekend or something. Not writing it off so soon.

Nice to hear you built PCs together though. My boys are 3.5 years and 7 months. Not quite ready but I'm looking forward to when they are. My 3 year old loves the Batmersive experience on Steam.

Yes, and now he is going to give them all to charity, about £2000 worth of tech hardly used o_O
Must be quite well off being able to buy 4 of these to give away, not to mention the PC's needed to run them.

I think what he meant was, why open all 4 units to 'try' them? Why not open just one and everyone have a go at trying various games with that one?

I too am thinking that you joined here just to post this and have a laugh, but if wrong then try some different games, there are plenty of different types out there and at least one member of your family must like at least one.

What about the setup demos? Show the family them bits? Had me going wow this is gonna be awesome!. That alien bit!!.

Can't play for long periods yet (think my tollerence has degraded after initially getting very used to it and not playing as much as i would like since) and have to be in the mood but it's mighty impressive.

Well, you don't outline any of the games that you've tried. You disregard all of the advice that people have tried to offer. You nip in and out of the singular and plural in your opening post, making it seem suspect whether there are, indeed, one or four units (or any at all).

In another thread, you state that you don't enjoy 3D TV because you don't like to wear anything on your head. So you go out and buy four Rifts, that are akin to industrial grade snorkel masks. Then seem all surprised that you don't like them, and you have to put them on your head. Assuming you bought them at the sale price, you invested £1600!! But luckily, you have 4, high-end gaming PC's capable of running VR. Not only that, but you have "sisters, cousins, nephews, neices, etc." who also, presumably, have high-end PC's to use with them. Despite working with hundreds of people, I'm the only person I know with a high-end gaming PC. To have a family awash with them is a rare thing indeed.

Once again, I sincerely apologise if I'm wrong, as only you have the absolutes. But, if someone were running a book, I know where I'd put my money.......

We actually have a total of 7 'high end' computers in the house, put some are being used for dedicated tasks. All 4 of us built our systems to be able to handle the type of work I do for a living so they are all high end as you say. Frankly, I am quite surprised that a couple thousand dollars worth of gear is so shocking to people on an AV forum. A single pair of speakers can easily cost 2500.00 and that's with nothing to drive them. lol
I found the price to be quite low for the VR stuff personally, but if I were trying to pinch pennies, I would have not even bought one, let alone 4 so we could all play together. To me family activities are worth more than the money they cost, money is replaceable, time with the whole family playing and having fun is not. I suppose it is a matter of priorities and mine has family above money.
If you are trying to make me feel sorry for you, it isn't working.

That's funny. We do have Guitarsmith and guitars we all play, but that is something we can do without sweaty crap stuck on our faces. :)
I have a Strat David Gilmour edition and my wife has a John Lennon Epiphone Casino. The kids have A Mustang and a Gibson Les Paul.
We still like to play music together.
If I do give the VR stuff to charity, it would be a tax write off and I'd get as much as if I sold it used, but feel better about how it is used. It will be a part of our 10% tithe.
