    Hello folks

Can anyone recommend a basic stereo amp that can drive 2 pairs of speakers but doesn't have lots of inputs or too many extras like tone control, balance etc? Looking to spend up to £250.

    Any suggestions gratefully received!

    Cheers
    Al

If you dont need a remote and are happy to go 2nd hand you could pick upa musical fidelity X-A2 in your budget.

If it was me then I would be sorely tempted to go 2nd hand but the cambridge audio 640V2 is hard to ignore for £299 new http://www.richersounds.co.uk/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=CAMB-640A-V2-SIL (or its smaller brother for £250 the 540)

You could also try a rotel Ra-02 2nd hand for c.£150 (£250 new I think) or you might even dig up an older cyrus 6.

A lot depends upon your musical taste but £250 is quite a lot of money!

the cambridge is the obvious choice...and it sound pretty good too.

I'd keep off the MF gear unless your speakers are laid back ..they can sound rather up front and agressive if not carefully matched.....imo

Thanks all for the tips. Seems like people prefer CA to Denon... does anyone have any thoughts on the Denon PMA700? I'll also have a look through the classifieds for second hand amps.

you can pick up a new Rotel RA-04 for £250 new, pop into sevenoakes if there's one near to you and give one a try, failing that, find a richersounds and try the cambridge audio

i went into r/s looking to get a cambridge audio 540 v2 for £250, and picked up a 640 v1 for £150, they do have limited stock tho but its worth a punt. its a cracking deal if they have any.

ABL - it would be very worth your while looking for a amplifier from Harman Kardon called the HK 6550, made in 1991 but a few knock about on the second hand market - namely German Ebay - I have owned 2 - on my second one now, they go for £150-200, and quite frankly are up there with current £1000-1500 amplifiers no problem.

Do a search on Google for HK 6550 and see what pops up, worth reading the views about them, also consider the Sony TAF-30ES, again an A/B speaker design - Ive owned 2 of those before, quite stunning amps, but the HK 6550 is a more classy with more power and finesse.

Mine's currently drives Dynaudio Contour 1.3 Mk IIs - no slouch in the sound department, and the 6550 keeps the £1500 Primare A30.1 (I30) used elsewhere, that is how good it sounds.

Just received the amp but it is in a worst state than you could possibly imagine

It is bent, twisted, scratched and has a huge dent in both front corners! And it stinks of smoke

It certainly wasn't damaged in transit because it was packed very well, and there is very little damage to the box.

I'm not even gonna bother turning it on and think I've fallen victim to a bit of a scam here... does anyone know if the people at hifi-leipzig are likely to give me a refund?

I didn't even know it would be second hand :thumbsdow

Guess all you can do is contact them to see what they say.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune.

I know of 3 guys who have bought from them on the Wigwam forum, one of my 6550s hailed from this outfit too, all report really good service, they also have a 100% trader rating on Ebay, worth contacting them to find out what went wrong. Then report back here, I am sure they will sort out the shipping back to Germany, and they offer a 3 or 6 month warranty.

Sorry to hear of your 6550 being dinked like that.

FWIW these amps hail from 1991, they are all second hand.
