    Hi people :)

My system is all setup and working correctly.

My question is this. When I play a 4K Dolby Atmos DVD, not only does it look lovely, the 7.1 works a treat and ATMOS shows on my Amp readout. (LED)

When I goto uTube and find a 4K stream with Dolby Atmos, again the picture looks fantastic but the Amp does not show Atmos. Only the various other soureces such as Rock, Jazz etc.
Is this correct, as it's not a true Atmos source from uTube, even though it says it is ,or is there something I am missing and need to do to fix this?

Thanks again guys for your time in reding this :) and responding...

YouTube doesn't use anything more than 2 channel stereo audio and Dolby Atmos metadata would need to be packaged with either DD+ or TrueHD formatted audio. YouTube doesn't have any ability to stream DD+ or Dolby TrieHD. Despite many videos being labelled as having 5.1, 7.1. DTS:X and Atmos audio none of them actually have anything more than just 2 channel stereo.

If anyone uploads content onto YouTube that includes multichannel audio, the audio is automatically downmixed into stereo.

Wow, thx for your super quick response :)

So when it says 4K and check your Atmos setup with this video, it's basically a lie?

YouTube are not lieing, the person who uploaded the video is more than likely not aware that YouTube doesn't facilitate surround multichannel audio and isn't aware that the audio will have been downmixed into just 2 channel stereo when they uploaded it. YouTube themselves don't label or title the content uploaded to their service, the people uploading the content do this.

Yes of course you are right that it's the person labeling their own stream.
Thank you for your help :)

Do you know if there is anywhere on the internet where you can test Dolby Atmos and maybe even with a 4K picture in tow?

I know of where you can get demo material, but you'd need to download it and use a media player to play it. This would not however be anything more than HD 1080p in nature.

    Do you know about 'Plex'?
I have been to the site you mentioned and downloaded Atmos Amaze
When I use a program to convert it to an MP4 the best I can get out of my Atmos Amp is Doldy digital surround. I don't understand what I need to do to stream it?

What device are you using to play the file and can it bitstream either DD+ or TrueHD. What is the Amaze file encoded with, Dolby Digital + with Atmos or Dolby TrueHD with Atmos?

The Device you are running the media player on will need to have the ability to bitstream the associated Atmos audio to your AV receiver via HDMI. Note that even if the device has this ability, the media player implementation on that device may not be able to fully utilise this. Many UHD Blu-ray players for examply will not allow you to bitstream TRueHD or DD+ if using their media playing abilities to play files.

    My head hurts lol

In my front room I have a 4K tv and I also have a PC with a decent 1080 gpu which can utilise the codecs that I need. When my PC was connected to the TV it use to show the codecs. I have now moved the PC to the bedroom and in the bedroom I have it now plugged into a full HD tv. The computer no longer shows the codecs.

I am trying to stream from the pc via PLEX to my amp to the TV downstairs.

    This is the file AMAZE

Downloadable Dolby Atmos Trailers | Dolby Laboratories

I am finding this quite hard to follow and I am wondering whether I need to set something on the amp like passtrhough or something to get it working. I just dont know

You cannot stream video to an AV receiver. AV receivers haven't the ability to play either video or multichannel audio via their inbuilt media player. You'd have to access the file using an external media player and then bitstream the audio from that device to the AV receiver.

The file you've linked to would be encoded with DD+ and this would be the format inside which the Atmos metadata is encoded. Samsung TVs have issues outputting DD+ with the inclusion of Atmos metadata so I'd suggest not to expect Atmos if using a media player app on the TV and if then conveying the associated audio out of the TV to your AV receiver via ARC. You need a external media player which you'd then connect directly to one of your AV receiver's HDMI inputs. Either this or a direct HDMI connection from your PC to the AV receiver and an app on the PC via which you'd play the file.

This is only an example, but the following is how I play Atmos encoded files. I store the files on a QNAP NAS and access them over my home network using a Mede8er med1000x3D media player. This is connected directly to my AV receiver via HDMI.

Sorry I meant I am streaming to the Smart PLEX app on the TV downstairs via PLEX on the PC upstairs and ARC is enabled on the amp which is allowing me to see the pic and hear the audio.

There is a USB and an HDMI on the front of the amp. Could I connect something to this to watch the picture and get Atmos via the amp if I cannot stream it from the PC upstairs via PLEX?

Can you give me some examples of external media players that could do this apart from I guess taking the PC downstairs and plugging it directly into the amp?

    Thank you

AS said, some Samsung TV have issues with outputting Atmos packaged with DD+. You'd not have this issue if using an LG TV, but may have difficulty accessing the Atmos metadata in association with a SAmsung TV?

The NVIDIA Shield is probably you best bet. It is probably the most accessible option open to you?

I watch DVDs from my 4K player and Atmos shows on the amp, so there must be a way of, maybe not streaming Atmos (although forums say PLEX can) but getting it to play from a media player?

Yes, put your UGD disc player hasn't any ability to bitstream DD+ or TrueHD in association with media files or its media player. Its ability to bitstream these formats will be restricted to content you play on disc.

    Yes.

Not sure as to whether or not the XBox has the ability to bitstream Atmos in association with cntent played via its inbuilt media player?

I'd not suggest the Apple TV if wanting to access files stored on your PC and use it as a media player. It wouldn't be able to bitstream TrueHD which is what most Atmos soundtracks actually use. I also don't think its Atmos abilities extend to its media player if access your own files?

The Shield supports the bitstreaming of DTS:X and Atmos as well as TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio in which DTS:X and Atmos metadata are more often than not packed. The shield will also facilitate the playback of MKV containers which the Apple TV will not. You'll encounter similar shortcomings in association with the XBox.

Why not just connect the pc to the amp downstairs and save yourself all the headaches?

Why do you need the pc in the bedroom, if it isn't too personal a question? Easier/slash cheaper to stream to the room that doesn't have the extra av requirements.

It use to work fine as stated in probably the first post but re-giggle of the house and Dragon ;) decides that the PC needs to go upstairs. Maybe I should try and get her to pay for the extra outlay :)

Real 4K HDR Dolby Test ultrahd movie for 4k...

Put the amp in Dolby mode and it does a surprisingly good job of pushing the sound to all speakers. An odd video to load by Dolby though as YouTube only supports HDR, not DolbyVision.

    Better than nothing though.

I haven't seen this one, but looks similar
