Nintendo online - 2 switches

I have a query about Nintendo's online platform.

I have two switches and want to play online with both at the same time (e.g. on Splatoon etc).

Do I need a family membership or can I do it through an individual membership?

Clues in the name, more than one switch in a family would require a family membership.
Have a look in this thread as there are members asking about joining a family group.
