Nintendo account woes help

i have a Switch and an account which I manage for purchases etc. I have set up two IDs for my children giving them their ID name and a password.

Now when I go to log in on their 3ds's it errors out when I sign them in. I go to sign them in with their Id and password but it also asks for their email. When I set up the kids account it didn't ask for an email so I assume this is the master email for my account. This however still doesn't allow them to log in...

I'm going around in circles on the Nintendo support pages. Is there a simple fix or solution to this?

Did they already have pre-existing 3DS ID names and passwords?
The Nintendo Account that you use on the Switch is not the same as the NNID that the 3DS and Wii U use (you can link them to the Nintendo Account on the Switch though).
ie if you have only set up a Nintendo Account for them on your Switch, you can't use this to login to the 3DS as it's a different setup. You need to setup a NNID on the 3DS.
