very tempting. I'm on the look out for a SLR (fed up with poor quality cameras)
Is it worth waiting for the new model or go with this one?

doesn't say much about spec

Hi
I am a proud Nikon D40 user. Makes a perfect beginners camera.

I bought my camera two months ago for £305 with kit lens (55mm). I thought i had got myself a bargain until i read this thread...

£399 with the kit lens and 200mm lens is a mega bargain.

There are many threads on this forum comparing the D40 against other camera but just to summarize the 'goods'

Smaller and lighter than most SLR camera - great for guys and girls with small hands
Much better and bigger LCD than the cannon 350
Improved viewfinder
Improved processing engine (less noise & sharper)
Very easy menu

Grab one b4 its too late ;)

Hey!

I still haven't got myself a cam yet! Almost bought the 400D on the weekend, but by the time I'd plucked up the courage, they'd sold out.

I did like the feel of the D40 (I have small hands!) but the only thing that worried me was the couple of things it was missing, i.e. it starting from ISO 200 (doesn't it?), limited lens range and AF motor.
Have you found any of these to cause you issues? :)

Ahoy!

I know nothing about Nikon, but this deal seems worth looking at:

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/[email protected]@@@[email protected]@@@&BV_EngineID=ccccaddkilfhlemcflgceggdhhmdgmj.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=285888&category_oid=

Includes D40 body + 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses for £399.00 including free delivery. I guess it's a bargain!

It appears you're not able to have this delivered. The only option seems to be to collect from a store, but all of the one's near to me don't have it!
Edit: This is the same for the offer on the Curry's website as well, for others who may be about to try it.

The ISO ranges from 200 to 1600 which works for me - covers a wide range.

Your absolutely right about the limited range of lens you can use on this camera, you are restricted to AFS, AFS-VR ranges.

I went for the AFS-VR lens which can be used on other Nikon cameras when and if i decided to upgrade and has the added advantage of being able to zoom out to 300mm without hand shake movement.

No store within 100mls of Glasgow has them.:nono:

I wonder which one's actually have them then! There weren't any near Birmingham - for Curry's or PC World. I would have thought that if any of these stores did have any, that they'd be able to post them as well. But it's saying they're out of stock for delivery.

Dixons are also running this deal but are out of stock.

After a search I found a similar deal..

1 x Nikon D40 Kit (with 18-55mm DX Lens)
- Memory Cards (optional): ** NO additional card ** £335.99
1 x Nikon AF Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6 G Lens £69.99

from http://www.onestop-digital.com

a tad over £400 delivered. Having said that I'm now tempted by the newer D40X

Any comparisons on the two? It's supposed to be 10.2 mega-pixels

It offers nothing other than 4mp which is absolutely un-noticable on screen and in most prints below 30x20".

Don't get sucked in ... it offers little other than a number - well, that and more noticable noise due to the higher mp count on the same sized sensor.

Am I correct in thinking that this lens would be better than the one Curry's and PC World are offering with the D40, seeing as it goes up to 300mm rather than 200mm?

Might have to take this offer seeing as I've had no luck with the other stores by me having them.

The 70-300 G lens isn't AF-S, so it'll not be autofocus on the D40/D40x.
Quality-wise it's probably fairly similar to the 55-200 (maybe slightly worse).

Thanks for the heads up.

I'll stick with the older version

Could you tell me what the zoom range would be with this please? AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED Lens
i.e. x5, x10 etc? :)
