    In other news:
    • Coin comes down heads 200 times in a row.
    • Lottery winner killed by meteorite.
    • Elvis returns in flying saucer, lands on Loch Ness monster, and then rides into London on Shergar before competing in Wimbledon.

Just placed an order (with Lintone Audio) for a Bryston SP1.7. Of course it's going to be 4-8 weeks before it actually gets to me, but I just thought I would startle everyone by mentioning it.

Forgive me for being a bit slow, but are you hinting that you don't buy things very often?

    Outstanding!

I'm sure you're gonna love it.

So that's Bryston SP1.7, 9B-SST and what 'speakers? I have a feeling it was Kef Reference but I may have plucked that out of thin air.

    Keep us all posted,

    D.

btw Nicolas, I also bought a Bryston but the SP1. I eventually found an ex-demo at radford audio in Bristol.
Lintone quoted me 3950 for new SP1.7 and the same time scale for delivery. Couldn't wait so went for the SP1 and I hope to update it by end of the year or beginning of next.

Great news! Where did you listen to the Bryston?

    A few inaccuracies there.

Processor as you've just heard is to be an SP1.7. I also own a Bryston 4B-ST stereo power amp, and a Bryston 9B-ST 5-channel power amp. For cashflow reasons there's a fairly good chance I'll sell the 4B-ST, but that's still up in the air. Anyhow, neither is a new SST model.

Speakers: I've bought a pair of B&W Nautilus 803s and will at some point be adding a Nautilus HTM1 centre. Paradigm Servo 15 subwoofer. Haven't yet entirely made my mind up about rear speakers - as a first pass I'll probably buy a couple of Atacama SE 10 stands and put my current fronts on them. They're getting a little tired but should be perfectly ok for rear duties for a while.

The Cornflake shop, just off Tottenham Court Road. I highly recommend them - knowledgeable, helpful, friendly. Very few dealers manage all three. (Many don't manage any of the three).

    The threat of bankruptcy. :)

Don't know about the Bryston processor ... but from recolection Rotel advise that the unbalanced inputs are used on their amps whereever possible as the balanced inputs are just converted straight away.

The exception would be if you were using long cable runs where balanced cables would give you a little extra distance without interfearence.

    NicolasB,

Forgive me for asking buy why did you audition the Bryston at Cornflake and then buy it elsewhere?

    Regards,

    Jules.

For anyone who cares i have somewhere an older Stereophile review of a Rotel 991/993 and for a very good reason that escapes me right now, they were most adament that you should use RCA input's over the balanced option, there was some test-bench problem which unearthed a dificiency on both amps in comparison to the single ended option, i will look into this for you but would at least speak to Rotel to see if the topology/design/whatever has since changed from the 9 series.

    regards

    Steve.

certainly in the 991 ... a cursory glance when changing a couple of fuses ... the balance circuit looked to me like an invert and sum with op-amp kinda circuitry.

Because it either came with a blown channel or it blew when we plugged it in. It had not been in use for quite a while before we used it.

    Steff

ps yeah it was Vikki that answered the other one. It's amazing what she knows two years of getting drunk at University did have some benefit (well she thinks so anyway!!).

PS version 2: If only she wouldn't keep writing off cars!! (especially on my sodding insurance). Never wanted new speakers anyway... I mean spending them on a car is much more fun NOT!!

SD, do the lights dim slightly when you switch the 993 on? A mate with a 993 has this "feature" :) in his house.

That's my (metaphorically of course) GIRL.

I have worked along side several female technicians over the years and have felt unfortunate to have had to deal with them. This is absolute not a sexist view, it is that i have not yet worked along side a female colleague who i felt had the "dedication".
of course i realise there are female geniuses out there who would make my standard look positively neanderthal.

    Steff.

If it's of any consolation (not) you could always pimp her out as a service engineer.
I know of at least one person who may need an EEPROM exchange.

And i have to suffer the indignation of working alongside some "professionals" who wouldn't know a rectifier from an 10 FARAD (very large) cap.
