Apart from the obvious, one of the things that makes the iPad Mini so light and portable is its touchscreen design, which uses a special film-based touch panel, which is thinner and lighter than the glass-based touch panel that the current full-fat iPad uses.

According to some of Apple's suppliers in Asia, that very same tech is on its way to the next generation of the full sized iPad, reports the Wall Street Journal.

For mobile device makers, a film-based touch panel is becoming increasingly attractive as former technical disadvantages have largely been overcome and are becoming more offset by the advantages in thickness and weight, said DisplaySearch analyst Shoko Oi.
