If they had a decent cpu inside the tv then Dolby Vision would never have been a problem and AndroidTV would run perfectly.

Why are all the big AV sites like yourselves so afraid or unwilling to take Sony to task about this?

Yet again no pricing and availability. Not much has changed from last years models really. The X-motion seems to be one of the main features.

We have taken them to task about the lack of processing power in their TVs many times in the past and I had a long list of questions relating to the Dolby Vision debacle but they refused to discuss it.

It was very disappointing, I didn't see anything that I hadn't already seen at CES and there was no new information.

Thanks for trying Steve, sounds like a massive PR own goal of an event by Sony. What incentive is there for other manufacturers to upgrade the firmware on their own UHD players so they may play on a competitor's TV?

With regards to manufacturers reneging on promises, perhaps it's time someone set up a dedicated thread for this subject. There's been a bit of discussion in the Samsung KS8000/9000 thread about Samsung reneging on a previous statement about updating KS models with HDR+.

This, along with the debacle surrounding their supposedly upgradeable One Connect Boxes, Sony's botched implementation of Dolby Vision and if memory serves there was also an issue with Panasonic updating the DX902, has become something of a scourge within the industry.

It gives the impression that the manufacturers are purposefully not delivering on previously stated future updates to existing models with the sole aim of encouraging sales of upcoming models with said features included. Which, if the case, is underhand anti-consumer tactics.

A bit of a damp squid. If I was ever in a position to buy a new TV this year, I think I'll be looking elsewhere. Especially since it'll be an OLED so there is hardly a lack of other TV's to look at.

Just when we thought Sony had pulled their socks up.

To not get pricing or availability info was very disappointing.

I guess we will just need to wait till the reviewers get their samples to find the info we truly want to know. I assume no indication was given on when the the review units might go out either?

They have just announced that the price will be announced through a firmware update coming in 2018 or early 2019.

Thanks for the coverage. I was looking forward to this. I guess we are in a period of transition and stagnation of market, hence the minor upgrades, although last year's lineup was generally pretty solid, there wasn't much need for major upgrades.
Re underpowered Mediatek chipsets - there's probably a complex business reason for it (and boards probably can't be changed easily in a production run). It's easy to complain as a bystander, but Android TV is definitely at its most stable.

There will also be a new Linux based XE7 replacement, called the XF7. Nothing new to report there, apart from the new stand design and likely all sizes using IPS panels this year (last year it was a mix of LG IPS and Samsung VA panels for that range).

Panasonic have some nice looking models coming, again with minor upgrades on last year. They've redesigned the Firefox/My Home Screen slightly and moved it to the lower third of the screen like Samsung Tizen or LG WebOS. It looks nice and is a nice, clear clean OS to use (it's a shame Panasonic don't get the love they deserve anymore - they're a classic Japanese brand with really high standards).

To buy at launch prices would be nuts anyways... Good deals on 2017 ranges coming around Easter!

there's nothing complex about it. They (MTK and Android TV vendors) just don't want to do it. Sure, it's not the same SoC as for phones and so not made in the same quantities but essentially it's the same thing as 1st iteration in 2015. They just add some of those TV related stuff (4k support, HDR, proper DV in new SoC and so on) but from OS point of view its the same old crap that can't render UI in 4k on 4k panel since that Mali GPU is pure crap. Just like the whole SoC. But hey, let's put that Gamloft (known by their light and undemanding games ) store in the prominent place on the home screen. Luckily, with just 8GB of storage, one can't hardly even donload one to see how it crawls with that great HW and 1GB of RAM.
And what's even worse is that they don't use standard APIs so some stuff which are expected to be there and work in something called "smart" just don't. Long time ago promised expandable storage doesn't work. USB writing for user is gone since MM "update", audio pass through newer worked for 3rd party apps. And 6352883 other "won't be fixed" bugs. I don't expect shiled like SoC and performance but ATM this "smart" platform is nothing better than any other embedded stuff before that. Stuff that came OTB work (untill "update" breaks it) and 3rd party things are treated like a cancer.
While TV as such did get some more or less usefull things since 2015, smart platform is still the same bastard child that it's there just because everybody else has one. And we can't just unplug the board or something and pretend that it's not there since even the volume bar that we see is an app.

      Rant over.......

I asked about review units but again Sony were non-committal and the TVs were only showing a static image with their model number and specs, so watch out for any so-called 'hands-on' reviews.

There were some demos as well, so they had the AF8 vs a C7 to show the 'superiority' of the X1 Extreme processor and they had the XF90 against the XE90 and Q7 to show the effectiveness of the X-Motion Clarity feature. The OLED demo was primarily in Vivid mode, although they did switch to Cinema mode as well, and whilst the AF8 did look good, I always take these demos with a pinch of salt. However, I will say that the X-Motion Clarity feature on the XF90 did look impressive with smooth motion and a brighter image. This feature will only be on the XF90 and Sony said you could use it with HDR, although I'm struggling to understand how that would work.

Thanks, I will do, Its the 49" model I am in interested in, I get the impression based on the various Sony websites around the world that this size may be launching later than the others because the "tech specification" sections are not filled out for this size.

I think like mentioned before we should have a thread on failed promises and defects with any TV manufacturers.

I thought the 850 series and up are 120hz panels?

The xf90 doesn't seem that much of a jump from the xe90, personally i am way more interested in the lg flagship lcds which apparently have full array backlight/local dimming.

That, along with the o/s could be a fantastic leap forward for the upcoming lg sets

I would love one of the Manufacturers to be really brave and put all the money and R&D into the panel, and purely picture processing, like the good old Pioneer plasmas. These days trying to get all these features and apps and pre-processing is irrelevant, considering most peoples content comes from cable, sky,Freeview pvr, fire stick, roku, bluray player, most of which do a better job of the apps and network services they try to cram into the TV. Samsung had the right idea a couple years back with the upgradeable/replaceable box, but seem to have already abandoned it. Plus displays are getting thinner, we just want a single HDMI cable to navigate into the TV.

Disappointed that the ZD9 can't get the X-Motion Clarity, would be interested to see how it works.
