Would have been interesting if it did 5.1 analogue out, alas it's only Panasonic that now do this

Is it just me or does this player appear to do nothing especially interesting?

I would imagine most folks will go for this one Sony UBP-X800M2 4K UHD Blu-ray Player With HDR as the 1100 looks like a pro install version like the 1000, (In other words very expensive) however it is good to see a player that plays a multitude of different discs without costing a fortune. (The 800m2 not the 1100)

No. Panasonic players such as ub420, ub450, or ub820 does SDR tone mapping too. And they do HDR10+ too which is a ridiculous omission from this Sony.

Not that ridiculous when it's also missing from the Sony TVs they want you to pair it with.

I think the X800M2 is enough for me, though.

Yes the Panasonic UB9000 does (possibly others as well), also, lets you adjust subtitles' luminance as well.

How good is this feature ? Is it more of a gimmick, or is there an obvious difference ? i.e. close to quality of 4K image ??

Thanks I ask as downscaling Bohemian Rhapsody 4K on a LG Up970, the colours are all very dark. I am not sure If it is doing anything other than adjusting the resolution.

Having gone in store and tested the Pioneer I don’t think it did much good either. Then again the store assistant was controlling the player rather than I having a tinker with anything other than resolution.

Last night i connected my Sony X800 to a 1080p display & i'm finding it to be an excellent picture, better than standard Blu Ray, but dark scenes appear too dark. I guess this is what you would expect it to be ??

Lol, yes I am experiencing the same. Just darkness really.

Annoying as I have a 1080p PJ but a Dolby Atmos system and the BR BD disc doesn't have the atmos soundtrack.

On the X800, have you tried pressing the Option button on the Remote when the 4K disc is playing? When you do this, you get a choice of Video Settings. Select this and you will see Picture Quality Mode options that can effectively lighten or darken the picture. Default setting for this Auto, but sometimes it needs a little help to get the right picture brightness.

No i haven'done that. Wasn't aware of that. I've put my "heavy" 1080p TV back in the bedroom now, so will try it again sometime....i will probably take my player to my friends, next week & can try it on his TV, the one it's intended for.

i suspect the panasonics players will still have the edge with HDR+10 even though not many movies carry it as yet interesting to see what price it comes in at.
