And you were expecting it to be.......?

Need to see the screen. Not sure how an 18.5:9 ratio will be like to use. But then it seems as though this will be the new norm. Apple rumoured to be like this too.

Early 1st impressions say the fingerprint location is pretty bad, but the new face recognition works extremely well.

But still waiting for iPhone 8 and hopefully a new Pixel.

Why has the S8+ got a lower PPI than the S8? They have the same res screen and are the same size.......

Not what it says in the article, hence the confusion.

So it does. Missed that. The 8+ looks massive in the hands (smirk). Better (if you can notice) ppi and 5.8" is plenty big enough for me.

Might as well hold out for the note 8. Probably be about a grand though. Fingers crossed they will sell refurbished note 7's as rumours suggest. Under £500 I'll be first in line.

I guess time will tell whether the budget manufacturers, like OnePlus, can bring similar features and an equivalent level of design and build quality this year within their much more constrained BOM.

I'll preface this by saying that my preference is to pay as little as possible for anything... However, I am willing to pay a little more to get a higher specced, more feature rich or better performing piece of technology sooner than would be achievable at a lower price point.

It's as expected. It's just getting out of control. My note 4 was £630. And the notes have always been pricier than pretty much anything else. Now even supposedly cheaper brands like Huwaei have phones at the £600 mark.

But why pay for a higher spec when it probably has a shelf life of two years-you've probably got a perfectly well specced 'phone as it is I assume? I personally just don't get it.

Of course your perfectly entitled to have a bit of luxury, god knows with all the miserable news at the moment we all need a bit of luxury:)

We've reached a point where budget or middle range phones are more than good enough for 99% of people. I have a Oneplus 3, and at £300 it was still more than I really needed.

I'd love an iPhone again (I was on iOS until the iPhone 6), but I'm not paying £800+ for a flippin' phone that lasts 18 months - 2 years, tops. Its utterly ridiculous.
      Same goes for this S8.

I think the days of flagship handsets at £600 + are almost over. Most people I talk to now are starting to see sense.

I guess the big price increase over last year is to pay some of their legal costs and Note7 failings.

Looks to be a great screen though.

But who is making them "upgrade" every year or two? The phones don't just stop working.

It here's the thing. This year, possibly next if you want a new Note (or whatever Samsung calls it, as thing the name has died) is going to produce some amazing phones.

Cards on the table, I have an iPhone and 99% I won't change (least permanently). IF the "pro" iPhone 8 is going to be the phone it's rumoured to be, I seriously doubt I'll be changing that for at least 3 or even for years. Same with all phones now. They are getting so good and expensive, I do agree with you that people are going to starting thinking twice about buying so soon.

Agree as the improvements on new models are very small these days with people being seduced by higher performance numbers. Will just buy a SIM card when my S7 contract ends.

You're right, the phones don't just stop working. But the batteries do wear out within a couple of years if you're charging daily... and they are nearly always non removable nowadays.

So I still reckon 2 years is about the limit.

My interest in phones has dropped considerably as the tech has hit limits, nothing new or amazing anymore. However, this is the best looking handset I have ever seen!

At £690 it is expensive, but all flagships handsets are expensive. Considering the amount of time I spend and things I use on my smartphone, it's not a terrible price to pay.

But battery performance significantly drops off after around 2 years in my experience as well as the devices not supporting the latest software.

My iPhone 6 is 2 and a half years old and still going strong, as it will be in 2 or 3 years time.

Replacing a phone every 2 years is not only expensive, but terrible for the environment. It's illogical in the extreme.

You may get iOS 11 out of it (which will probably cripple and slow it down) but no more after that I doubt, that's the main issue so it wont be going strong in 2-3 years time

I want the big one. Wouldn't consider the smaller one. I think the plus still might be too small in terms of screen area. I have my eye on the mate 9. But will try to hold out for the note 8.

I don't get all these people saying the lifespan is two years. My iPhone 5s was ancient. I sold it on here, still runs the latest software just fine. I have my iPhone 5 to my niece after she lost hers in Korea. It is still absolutely fine.

      No battery issues either.

But saying that a cheap android I got for my daughter barely lasted three months. I have her my iPhone 6+ and I used it but was so appalled by the experience I went for a free S7 Edge instead. But back to Apple when the 7 came out a I simply prefer it.

Interesting to see the naming convention of Samsung. I'd just not get one, wouldn't trust them to get it right. But more importantly would trust airport staff to distinguish it from the explosive model.

It feels like an upgrade for upgrade sake. But for someone in the market for a high end Android I'm sure it will be a great choice.

If you told the world in 1995 we'd be buying new phones every 2 years at £700 a go you'd have been locked up :)

I have an S7, great phone especially the camera, and i have to admit the S8 screen looks amazing, might get one when the S9 come out!

I used to sell these. To replace the handset it was something like £500. And remember the StarTac? That was £1000
