For those interested in bit rates:

Codec: HEVC
Average video bit rate: 18.64 Mbps
Peak video bit rate: 27.12 Mbps
Audio: 768 Kbps

I can bet the numbers are higher than iTunes.

Watched it last week, Hanks (Fail-Safe) always and in a western set post-civil war with a crazy little girl in tow. What's not to like, right? I come from an era of growing up with the Outlaw Josey Wales and Hang em High on the screens. My old man was western nut, Rawhide on a Sunday morning to Bonanza...
This movie is a sort of lower end of that scale for darkness and brutality. Did I like the movie? Yes, but the age we are living today you can see what this movie was trying to highlight... the man escorts troubled girl to safety whilst avoiding obstacles like on Richard Hammond's (WIPEOUT) :D we have seen before

Bone Tomahawk and Hostiles are better films.. Sorry Hanks/Greengrass! :D

6/10 is my opinion.

But generally there's no eulogising about which side was 'right' in the civil war (hint: it was the Union)
Right? And there was me thinking that those Southern boys were perfectly entitled to defend their homes, farms, and their country against the invading Union army (hint; the US civil war, like most wars, was a little bit more complicated than right v wrong).

This was meant to be a little more tongue in cheek than maybe it came across.

Thanks for the Review, Tom. Hopefully this will make its way to Prime at some point & I can watch this. Love quality Modern Westerns, & really like Tom Hanks, so this should fit me like a pair of Comfy Slippers.

Love Tom Hanks
Love Western
Love a good yarn

But I found this a bit slow, a bit boring and uneventful
The little girls acting was poor which annoyed me

A generous 5-6/10 for Hanks otherwise it would be even lower for me.

Just finished watching it. Rather enjoyable. Solid 8/10 from me and the missus. Not too different from Hostiles and The Homesman (Tommy Lee Jones).

I'll wait for the UHD release.
Many movies, even made by streaming platforms, deserve more quality than they can offer streaming.
So many times let down in my HT-room by the limited presentation they bring.

Shame really, me and my wife found it boring as hell and frustrating(too much of nothing), almost no action. Tom was the only half decent thing (Just, but I bet he took 50% from the budget in wages though). The girls acting was also poor too.

Also no Dolby Vision? also very poor!
Dolby Atmos was poor too. It was 5.1 hidden in it, rain scene showed that the most.

Story line has been done 100s of times lol. Which killed it, just why the same old crap?

If you like it, your easily pleased and about 20 years old.

Trying to shame other people for liking something you don't like, is something most adults leave behind after high school. So how old are you again?

5/10

I think this film was too visual (which were stunning at times, showing landscapes, environments and localised towns) but lacked in every other area. A road movie with danger around every other corner? Except they never felt in real danger... which was the main lacking issue. There was no sense of struggle (bar understanding a word the girl said from Tom’s character). It was all a little convenient and the girl didn’t convince at all. Slow burn movie’s need weighty dialogue and impactful character stories and this film had neither. Disappointing.

Surprised to see people laying it on Helena Zengel, I thought she was excellent, Hanks obviously is Hanks, but she was delightful. Film itself was far to lightweight to have any impact so overall a little disappointing.

Really enjoyed the film but yet another movie added to my list where I regret watching a stream rather than a proper UHD disc.

Every time I go back to discs I am staggered about how superior the image and sound is. A crying shame the format is going to die out.

A gorgeous episodic western with a mute girl. But just one mute girl, not two. And without three brutal hangings, two women's tongues cut out, a baby with a crushed head, animal and human character alike put down with an antique bolt gun, multiple throat and face slashings, women forced to wear face cages, a child graphically bushwacked, and a dumbstruck dad eviscerated and left to die tied up in his own entrails, with plot nods to Chinatown and Sommersby, it's no Brimstone.
equally, NOTW did have anything remotely as idiotically misplaced as one particular scene in Brimstone that ruined the entire movie. guess the writer was a huge Pitch Black fan.

I am a big fan of Pitch Black but must admit you have me stumped. What nod to PB in Brimstone are you referring to?

the bit where she's ties up and does the Riddick move of swinging her arms up behind her and over her head w/out totally ripping out her rotator cuffs etc. I'll accept it in PB because Riddick was always hinted as not-quite-human, but it jarred stupidly hiere - and if that wasn't enough, Guy standing there totally wreathed in flames and making no reaction at all was just ludicrous.

Thanks, I remember now. Unfortunately, I've seen similar stunts so many times they no longer trigger disbelief. "Yeah, she could do that." No, probably not.

A bit on the slow side for me but another film that burst into life when the two main characters were put in peril.6 out of 10 for me

According to Bill Hunt at TheDigitalBits this is slated for release on disc on March 23rd, at least in the US. No word regarding DV or Atmos, though.
I'll be picking it up, I think... If only to support the dying format :)

It's not quite up there with Hostiles or Brimstone (from the most recent western releases) but still rather enjoyable.

I always hate it when people have to make some sweeping judgement on why people have a different opinion. For a start you don't know and second I find it stupid and arrogant.

We liked it. I do not require others to agree with our tastes.
