Any news on native refresh rates for 24p content? The Apple TV is updated do this so would be good if Nvidia applied it too.

Until they fix the huge issues with the shield I don't think anyone would rate this as the "king of media boxes". They need to fix what is broken before investing in new features IMHO.

I think it's time the ATV got crowned the king of the media boxes IMO.

Can you play ripped MKV's with HD audio files (dts-hd- trudhd, atmos etc) yet?

Great. This is what i've been waiting for. So if I use infuse, this will show as DTSHD on my amp?

No. It will show up as MULTI CHANNEL PCM, the same as if you get your blu-ray player to decode the disc instead of the amp. The result is identical, and you can of course still upmix them with dolby surround and/dtsx neural if you've extra speakers.

Not likely. It'll go from DTS HD lossless, into LPCM lossless instead. I'd be interested to know what difference people would find they could hear that's different between the two identical lossless outputs mind.

Probably the same type of differences you can hear between a €30 interconnect and a €5000 interconnect, the sound will really open up, the textures will become more nuanced, the soundstage will envelop you in a more caressing way. But most of us won't notice any differnce, because there really isn't any :)

I'm confident that no one who actually owns one would consider it as that.

Shall we talk about the fact that it's incapable of switching between rec.709 and rec.2020 colour spaces except by going into the "advanced" display settings and changing it manually every time?

Or the fact that it's incapable of producing 2160p/24Hz output in Netflix? (If you want 4K it has to be 50 or 60Hz).

Or the fact that Netflix doesn't change the output refresh rate to match the frame rate of the video?

Or the fact that if you start Netflix running at 24Hz and try to change the output manually to 50Hz, you have to force-stop the app to make the change stick?

Or the simply abysmal upscaling quality?

Or the fact that it can't handle 4K YouTube videos?

Or the highly questionable image quality and colour accuracy, even with the best possible settings?

Or the inability to handle frame-packed 3D?

      (sigh)

Atmos on the ATK4K will be limited to iTunes and maybe one or two or other Internet streaming apps like Netflix and Vudu. You will not be able to get Atmos output from blu ray rips.

So far, I have not come across one that is fit for purpose; they're all rubbish.

If you can live without Atmos and DTS:X on blu ray rips, don't care about 3D, don't need automatic resolution switching, don't care about fancy Kodi skins, don't mind about not being able to get 4K or HDR stuff on YouTube, and understand that no media player on Earth can handle Dolby Vision on UHD blu ray rips, then the Apple TV 4K is probably one of the less annoying options.

If you need Atmos on disk rips and don't really care about internet streaming services, and don't mind waiting a few weeks, the Vero 4K + might be worth a try.

Some people have good things to say about Zappiti players - I'm not personally familiar with them, but am suspicious of anything that runs Android....

That assumes the conversion is done correctly, but it quite likely won't be.

I know there was a bug in the Infuse app a while back which meant that it was decoding DD+ audio incorrectly. I don't know if it was ever fixed.

I've also seen an analysis comparing an original DTS-HD track with the result of decoding it to PCM on an ATV 4K and on a Vero 4K, and neither device produced a bit-perfect result.

On top of that, the ATV 4K can't output PCM with a frequency higher than 48kHz, and there are some audio tracks that are 96kHz or even 192. Whether you can hear a difference between 48kHz and 96kHz is certainly debatable, but if the device has to down-sample a 96kHz track to 48 on the fly, it's worth asking whether the way it does that is actually "correct". (Similarly, there are a small number of 32-bit audio tracks out there which have to be converted to 24-bit on the fly).

Glass half empty! How about half full... 100's of ATMOS movies on iTunes (and sound great), Netflix app already updated with loads of movies & tv shows in ATMOS (and sound great), would expect Amazon Prime to follow suit and Vudu etc. INFUSE are looking at how to implement ATMOS, so if that's possible you WILL have your blu-ray rips with ATMOS (not confirmed but i'd be confident in Infuse)

I wouldn't expect Amazon to do anything useful for other platforms. They only seem interested in the FireTV boxes with inconsistent and lacklustre efforts on other devices.

      How about half empty?

Seriously, though, there are lots of people loudly trumpeting "The ATV 4K is getting Atmos!!!" without qualifying that statement in any way. It may be the truth, but it's not the whole truth.

Also, TVOS 12 isn't even out yet, so let's hold off on claims about how wonderful it is until it's actually available, shall we?

I have two Shields and starting to see some of these issues, the 709/2020 thing is really starting to bug me, no 24fps for streaming apps also annoys me and I am starting to see a lot of lip sync issues with my own rips although I guess that one could be anywhere along the chain.

I am beginning to think something like the ATV for media streaming apps and Vero 4K to playback my own media as I like to rip all my Blu/UHD etc.

Well in fairness there's a lot of people on the beta, I am for the past few months, and the Gold Master yesterday. A company like Apple isnt going to go out of their way so people can watch pirated MKV rips with 4k and dolby atmos! It's there for streaming app like iTunes, netflix etc and it does that extremely well in 4k and atmos. Thankfully infuse is there and has been able to squeeze every bit of power out of the box so we can stream our MKV rips (our own, or otherwise aquired) with lossless sound and HOPEFULLY Atmos!

Amazon have already added atmos to a few smart TV platforms, Samsung and Hisense are 2 that i have read. These are older models aswell (the Samsung mu7000 was one)

It would appear that as these TV's can bitstream dolby digital+ they supported lossy atmos all along, it was just previously the only available way to get it was through Netflix and they seemed to prioritised the platforms which supported dolby vision

      cheers

When I looked into this last week I strictly found the was no option for passthrough on ATV. All the HD codecs were passed through as PCM .
