NEWS: JBL unveils four new Dolby Atmos soundbars

Hmmm, interesting. I already have the JBL 9.1 and find for our little tv room its ideal, especially connected to a LG C9 and Nvidia Shield. Be interesting on how the new Bar 1000 compares.

Looking forward to a review of the Bar 1000 as that has the upgrades I am looking for Iver the 9.1 I currently have.
Still seems that JBL are the only ones with battery powered rears which a real win for me

am the same, helps keep a smaller room looking tidy. keep the rear's attached to soundbar unless watching a movie - tv series that requires them.

Really interested in a review of the Bar 1000. I'm looking to upgrade my Yamaha YSP-2700 and this will hopefully give me a more immersive experience whilst keeping SWMBO happy as can bring out the rears only when needed

I'm interested to see what's new vs the 9.1 that I own. I guess it's gonna have to be good to tempt me to upgrade

Now this is interesting as the JBL One app also mentions a 1300 model

Even more interesting is what I found upon searching a JBL Bar 1300 and translated from German 🤯
The JBL Bar 1300 is designed as a premium device. With Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and six upward-facing channels, the soundbar offers three-dimensional surround sound like in the cinema. The speakers can be removed and used as stand-alone Bluetooth devices or as a stereo system. The device has Chromecast built-in, AirPlay and Alexa Multi-Room Music and can be connected to a smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth.

The 1000 appears to be very competitively priced. The Sony, once you've paid for the better sub and rears, is twice the price.

I'm wondering, though. This claims to be 7.1. Other 7.1 models have the front LCR in the soundbar, the rears handled by the wireless rears, and the sides created by side-firing angled speakers at the side of the soundbar. But where they'd be is where the wireless rears live when charging.

So where does the sound for the sides come from?

Not entirely sure, but from the demo vid it appears there’s more speakers along the front of the soundbar compared to the bar 9.1, the two speakers at either end of the main bar appear to be pointing out to the sides.
On the wireless speakers the forward facing speaker is in the corner.

According to this:

The JBL Bar 1000 is the flagship with 4 upfiring drivers. From Gonzo's the JBL Bar 1300 has 6 upfiring drivers. I wonder if the detachable speakers on the JBL Bar 1300 are also upfiring.

Ordered the 9.1 online 2 weeks ago, as soon as I saw the new lineup - ordered was cancelled. Although got the 9.1 for a great price (700$), I couldn't skip all the upgrades mentioned with the new JBL 1000. Corner facing surrounds, additional 2 front speakers, better voice clarily and full app support. I was also concerned with the fact that JBL stopped FW support for the 9.1 - yet many users continue to complain about battery issues and connectivity problems with the new Sony's XR based TVs.

Was thinking of getting the JBL Bar 5.0 but now looks like it's better to wait for the Bar 300, hopefully we get a wide release for these models soon. I assume these will be available worldwide at some point in the next few months?

Does anyone know if the detachable speakers have to be place behind you? I'm considering these as an alternative to Samsung HW-Q995B to avoid the wires but my sofa is right up against the wall so I can only place satellite speakers on either side of it. Has anyone tried that kind of set up with the 9.1?

Yeah mine are either side of the sofa turned in slightly at an angle.
Here’s a pic I took ages ago now, they’re not turned in but that’s where they sit when not connected to the bar.

Ha nice pic :D Thanks, that's good to know. I think I'll wait until it comes out next month and see what the reviews say. I expect it's not going to be quite as good as the Samsung one but if it's close I'll take the convenience of no cables.

Looks like the Bar 1000 will have 3 x HDMI inputs as well as the HDMI out/eArc, which helps me no end.

Well done JBL.
Yeah 1x eArC. Then 3 other ports. I believe 2 of them are also HDMI 2.1 passthrough ports, with full support for 4K 120Hz images and VRR.

Enquired re an Australian release date for the Bar 1000 at Harvey Norman today, was advised March 2023😳

Worryingly, the Daily Express (I know, I know) says "...late December/early January...".

Have you heard of any delay @Ian Collen ?

Yeah 1x eArC. Then 3 other ports. I believe 2 of them are also HDMI 2.1 passthrough ports, with full support for 4K 120Hz images and VRR.

It’s great. I have a SKY Q box, a UHD Player and an Amazon Fire Cube. Just the ticket.

It's so weird that those detachable surround speakers only use tweeters. Normally it should be full-range driver or tweeter+woofer. (I'm not talking about Height channel)

They didn't mention if the new series support Spotify Connect or not.

Delighted to read there is a Bar 1000 and possibly a Bar 1300 coming in October. I almost ordered the Bar 9.1 recently (after having hell trying to order the LG S95QR from Amazon Spain and Germany, they never ship them and cancel the order, been trying since July!).

I did read somewhere that the Bar 9.1 has a problem passing through Dolby Vision from a Panasonic UB820 4k Blu Ray Player. I hope this is fixed with the Bar 1000 and Bar 1300 as it was a deal breaker for me.

Also I read reports that the Bar 9.1 basically upmixes ANYTHING that is NOT Atmos or DTS X to 5.1 using DTS Neural X? Again I hope it's something that is fixed as I want my Blu Ray, DVD and 4K discs to be left au naturel in the audio department.

I absolutely LOVE the detachable speakers. I think these are what are wooing me away from the LG S95QR and Samsung Q995B. I really like the idea of being able to just undock the speakers and chuck them either side of the sofa when I want to watch a film. Once the final credits role, just pop them back on to the soundbar. Nice and tidy solution and also safe too if you have enthusiastic little ones running around the place that may knock your satellite stands over!

I think there is a LOT to look forward to with the Bar 1000 and Bar 1300. If they come in at sensible prices, have more than 1 HDMI input and have fixed the problems that plagued the Bar 9.1, then I will be at the front of the queue on Day 1 like a shot. Take me straight to audio heaven and back this October JBL!

Note to AV Forums team, specifically whoever ends up reviewing the JBL Bar 1000 and/or Bar 1300:

Please can you check in to those items I mentioned around DV on the UB820 and also see if the 1000/1300 upmixes everything like the 9.1 does? Also to note if the batteries on the satellites are servicable? Do they only recharge when the soundbar is completely off? What's it like compared to the LG S95QR and Samsung Q990/995B? Thanks!

EDIT:

Had a chat there with JBL customer support and was told the JBL Bar 1000 will launch this year (I assume October) and the JBL Bar 1300 will launch next year but no date is specified. I wasn't told what the differences between the 1000 and 1300 are, though I'd say it'll probably be a good idea to wait until specs and prices for the 1300 are released before dropping any money on either one.

Just found the owners manual for the JBL Bar 1000.

It looks like the charging process for the detachable speakers is the same:

6.2.1 Charge by docking the detachable speakers
Charging starts when you dock the detachable speakers onto
the soundbar.
When the soundbar switches to standby mode, turns on;
turns off when the detachable speakers are fully charged.
(So does this mean to charge the speakers the soundbar MUST be in standby so you can't charge them while it's switched on a you're watching the telly? Is this the same on the Bar 9.1?)
It takes about 3.5 hours for the empty battery to be fully
charged.

6.2.2 Charge through a USB cable

USB-C
• Use a USB-C cable to connect the detachable speakers to
power respectively.
• For the detachable speakers, the status indicator is used
for status indication of both battery power and wireless
connection (See “3.2 Detachable speakers”).
NOTES:
– * The USB-C cable is sold separately
