Would have to do something rather significant to be worthwhile of anyone upgrading their current box or deviating from the newly released TV apps for the more common user...
The ATV+ free sub (in fact the whole ATV+ service) is a perk for ipad/iphone sales, box sales are not important now. Apple do sometimes show leadership and dont do cheap, the stick market is sewn up by Firestick and Roku, but there is currently nothing to address the emerging 8K market - manufacturers and marketing always want something new even if we consumers think we dont.
Apple TV boxes already supports lossless codecs, however only music streaming services currently use them, so until film streaming services add that feature to their apps, having all the codecs in the world will make no difference.

There is no market worth Apples/Googles/Amazon's involvement in 8k yet at all. Nothing remotely medium term at current rates.
"To date, 8K has struggled to make a dent in the market. Last June, GfK said that fewer than 1,000 sets had been sold in the UK and – with a lack of affordable sets and worthwhile content – that is unlikely to have improved much as 2019 drew to a close.
In fact, IHS Markit even downwardly adjusted its estimations for 2019 8K TV sales from 430,000 units to only 167,000."
I wasn't talking about streaming as you can already get Atmos via Netflix etc. in a DD+ container. The problem is they don't allow lossless via infuse for people playing local files.
Do you mean Infuse won’t allow you to bitstream lossless audio?
I play my local files losslessly via Infuse and it works fine - I just get “PCM 5.1” on my AVR but it’s 100% lossless

Yes I am aware that it is lossless but what if you want Atmos or DTS:X? You cannot get them unless Apple allow infuse (or any other similar app) the ability to bitstream output.
Only if it is 48k sample rate, and not Atmos.I play my local files losslessly via Infuse and it works fine - I just get “PCM 5.1” on my AVR but it’s 100% lossless
