I have one that allows my hifi to be part of a multi room system along with a couple of Onkyo smart speakers. It is a shame they haven't produced something like the Amazon Echo Input that connects like the CCA but with voice assistant.

Surprised they've stopped production of this so soon. A good little device, especially considering the price they were.

Well... there goes my simple multi-room plan then. I really liked the idea of being able to use the "digital optical out" feature of the Chromecast audio to utilise the existing devices DAC, rather than having to fork out for a more expensive "dongle" with decent DAC.

I'm aware of the value to eavesdropping, sorry Voice Control, to the likes of Google/Amazon/Apple, but I can't be the only one who doesn't want to have to purchase an always listening device (whatever the reasons) just to stream an audio file.

Can anyone suggest the nearest alternative now? Is down to the significantly more expensive Musicast/Sonos/HEOS standalone boxes not then?

I'm thinking I should now perhaps dig out my collection and sell them to make a few bucks :rotfl:

It wouldn't put me off the CCA TBH, I already have 2 and I've just ordered 2 more while I can.

      Glad I saw this.

I sold all my Sonos gear last year ( for a blooming fortune considering it was all 10 years old) and replaced with Chromecast Audios. Way better if you have separate amps and speakers for multiroom.

Just ordered another two in case at £25.99 each brand new delivered. Google it...

Get 'em while you can! :)

These are extremely useful little devices I have two and call me paranoid but even though I have a couple of Echo's and the small google speaker I am starting to think do I really want this level of monitoring in my home. It's very interesting how things that are talked about suddenly appear in my Facebook feed..... just my experience. The only worry is when the say finishing like a recent experience of Spotify no longer supporting my B&O A9 which meant I had to explore an alternative way of streaming music to it as it was no longer supported by them, they effectively ensured that I could no longer directly stream from Spotify to the speaker all in the name of quality streaming services. Read licensing agreement ended.....

My 2 new ones have arrived today so I'm set for a while. I fully expect them to remain working for a while, yes they aren't made any more but the same stuff is being added to all sorts of devices including speakers, smart speakers and even several hi-fi separates so streaming music using Chromecast can only get bigger.

      WHAT?!?! No More Chromecast-Audio!

Though it would have probably made more sense to put that post in Streaming.

Shame, just as they were building a base for this product, they killed it. Though no clear reason was given. Greatest audio tragedy since Logitech killed the Squeezebox.

There are probably other similar devices that can be considered, but hard to determine if they work as well as the Chromecast-Audio.

The Teufel (Raumfeld) Connector seems to be the only replacement but costs £149.99.

Indeed - though ironically, the Logitech Media Server, which is still very much alive and well, can get Chromecast Audios to be used as if they were Squeezebox devices.

It requires you also install & configure the Chromecast Bridge LMS plugin. Can even get the Chromecast Audio to play gaplessly (via Chromecast Bridge's Flow function), something that Google never provided a fix for!

Out of interest, do you know if the Teufel Connector's gapless support still works when its being used with Google Cast?

I think this is a real shame. I was absolutely made up when I found these little devices about 12 months ago and I now have them all over the house. I was hoping they would be future proof within reason. I wonder how long they will last!
I think I'll order a couple of spares:)

I did the same a few years ago, sold all my Sonos for a good proportion of what I paid for them, bought CCAs for £15 each and never looked back.

Far more relatable connection, easy multi room and allows the choice of any speakers.

I was hoping that Amazon Echo might be a replacement, but I might buy a couple of spare CCAs while it catches up.

I used to use Logitech MS with a number of squeezebox clients (that are gathering dust somewhere) up until a few years ago. I have most of my music on a Windows server, so it made perfect sense. I replaced all of this with a number of CCA's plugged into the various hifi's around the house, and by using Plex as the control interface between my collection and my players, which i was using anyway. I'm a lifetime subscriber, so have Premium Music. Plex has cast functionality built in, so works very well with CCA, and Plex is aware of my music collection, so it was a simple act and a no-brainer for me.

Even if you didn't have Plex, i would choose this over LMS, being free, formally supported, and having a very active development community. Plus it plays all your other media content to pretty much any smart screen, mobile or tablet using the plex client, browser, or any cast-able audio device.

Not sure what you are trying to say here, as it appears you are contradicting yourself.

With the Logitech Media Server "being free, formally supported and having a very active development community" - why would someone only interested in streaming & playing audio, who hasn't already bought into Plex (and has no interest in a 'bloated' all media server very much biased towards providing video) choose Plex over LMS, especially given the above listed benefits of LMS that you yourself mentioned?

I interpreted Pasanda's words differently. I think "being free, formally supported, and having a very active development community" refers to Plex. Could be wrong though.

Could be taken either way, but I'm sticking to my interpretation given that anyone who's ever encountered LMS knows (or should know) that it's synonymous with "having a very active development community".

Sorry for the ambiguity. I can see how it could have been read two ways. I was referring to how Plex has the very active community etc. I am aware of both communities, and would suggest that LMS is less active the Plex, and by quite a way.

In terms of dissing squeezebox, i was a complete fanboy for what.. 8 years. I still believe the original Boom has the best sound per cubic inch of any speaker i've heard. But it's not better than my hifi's. I bought the Squeezebox touch to let me play out of my hifi, but that cost a lot of money, relatively speaking. I never really loved the LMS interface, which, at the end of the day, only ever played music. They also annoyed me by dropping support for a number of music channels, that i loved.

I can't judge Plex on its video community activity when compared to other similar all media servers, but I'd certainly suggest the complete opposite if you compare just Plex's non-video activity with LMS's (which only caters for audio).

For example, compare the number of currently active plugin threads in their respective 3rd Party Plugin topics/forums:
      Plex - only 7 in the last month;
LMS - 7 just in the last day, never mind the last month!!!

Just going back to the demise of the Chromecast Audio. Could the Chromecast TV device be adapted for just using the audio?
There are the same original retail price.
