Hi all i currently have my laptop loaded with all my music and films and pictures , now having lots of kids :D (6) and myself my internet and streaming is getting very slow to say the least currently everything is running through my broadband hub to access media files on my laptop , as it stands 3x ps3's, 2x xbox 360's, 2 other laptops , 3 iphones and 2 blackberrys!!!

so kind people what i would like to know is can i connect external hardrives to my ps3 systems directly to access films, music , & pictures??

if so how? what type of drive? , formatting ? any additonal setup info example would external drive be shown as a media server for that system , or just show as a drive etc etc.

Please help my house getting slower by the day lol

    cheers
    chaz

Sorry to hear that, some experience with that myself, but had no kids, quite shocked she just left you with them, no that you mind, of course.........

    COW!!

I would think about a NAS for your media, means you can share all your media to all your devices [theoretically].......

But a NAS wouldn't get around his streaming becoming congested...in fact, I wonder how it would perform (obviously varying from device to device) with multiple connections streaming stuff at the same time...

In general the broadband copes well with Internet side with multiple connections it's when they all decide to start streaming films or music from my laptop that it all starts grinding to a halt , every device also has lovefilm on it which is just total nightmare with just two connection , so my train of thought was either big nasdrive which as said won't solve bandwidth probs , or external drives into consuls with film music and pic content independently stored on each drive which would b nightmare to keep updated with content I update on my laptop??

    Cheers

if your have a gigabit network it would handle most of the things you require, obviously streaming love film etc would need a half decent internet package.........

the consoles would be the main problem, but are they all likely to be watching stuff at the same time..............

oh, do you live in mansion.............

A NAS would definitely make the management of you media a lot easier but as themediaman said you would have to probably upgrade your main streaming systems onto a gigabit network, especially if you might be streaming HD content - not expensive at all but it does depend where everything is located as to how straightforward it is to connect everything up.
Other option is homeplugs for your devices (200Mbps) but those are a little more expensive than straight cabling/switches but means less worrys about the location of all your devices.
    :)

A basic NAS should be fine for streaming to maybe 2/3 devices at once.
