Hi,
Just been reading the forums....like em very much....ok, Im new to all this but Im getting there....

Anyway, after some time reading about the 3 technologies, i'd like to go for a CRT projector for my first home cinema (i have a new dedicated room measuring 22' x 14').

From what I've read Barco are the way to go, and Im sure i read a while back about a website which sells reconditioned units. Would anyone here be able to point me in the right direction of this site?

Also, I'd be looking to spend up to around 3k, and for under 4k I saw the cine6, which im not sure if it's a good unit/good price or not...?

Also, would I need a dedicated pc to be able to watch films in good quality? Can I just hook up my dvd/sky boxes up to the barco? Would the quality suffer?

Sorry for these newby questions, but if I spend any more time scouring the net for info i'll get sacked!!!!!!!!!!!!

My email is [email protected] if the website is an issue on these forums.

Hi mate,
You want to speak to the following people;
Roland Brooks B4 Projection and a regular here, he sells recon Barco inc installation, either PM him or email [email protected] and take a look at his stock page at www.B4projection.co.uk

Also look for Gordon Fraser who specialises in Sony NEC and Barco and has a web page here www.convergent-av.co.uk and he is also a regular here.

Remember to budget for a decnt scaler.

Hope that helps

Dean
Welcome to the forum we have been laking some meaty new questions.

My advice when it is your first projector is to see and experience as many projectors as possible before you make a decision.
Buy a DVD that you will never want to watch (by the end of seeing it projected in varoius tints of colour and blacks you'll be sick of it) But pick a sceen from that DVD that has good shadow information and nice bright and subtle colours in other sections. Don't go for animation which will look good on anything.

For your budget you should easily achieve a fine result.

Happy to show you what a good CRT or two can do if you can make it down to Reading.

You will probably already have gathered that a PC can be very good or increadably anoying depending on how much knowledge you have in that area.

Scallers vary in quality and price a simple line doubler will cost around £600 up to a really good scaller at about £3500.

your room sounds ideal in size terms plan around a 7ft-8ft wide screen.

It may be worth hanging out with your local skip company for a while if you want a real bargin:D

Just to explain.
For those that missed it there two forum members who have found CRT projectors in rubish skips in the last two weeks.

I wonder why they're all skipping BARCO PJs? It's not 'cos they're all buying NEW ELLIEs is it?
Just a thought!

One more question, how would these ellie's compare to the old recon barco's? I've read in a review that when theres a shift from white to black scenes the some bounce? Is this the case with all crt proectors or just this one? Would the old barco's exhibit this problem too?
So many questions......(but i'm learning!!!!!!)

I dearn't post when the E word is posted cos I get flamed.

No they won't.

Wilders...I`m in the same boat. Been looking for the last three months now and have decided on CRT, Barco most likely, and tonnes of questions are flying through my mind. I`ve sent a PM to Roland but he does`nt seem to have got it so maybe I`ll snag him here...I`m looking up to £4000 also, but will buy a video scaler to go with it. Don`t suppose you could share info. on what you find...I`ll do likewise, I know how frustrating it can be.

Cheers

I think you'll find the so-called 'bounce' is due to an adjustment connected with 'tube life' on the 2000 model. The nearer to the limit the harder will be the cut-off. As far as I am aware, all Projectors have some kind of automatic gain control to control Peek white. If the peek white is set correctly, namely between 15 and 30 the gain will be within its linear band. This particular Projector is particularly sensitive on its adjustment to achieve its 20,000hrs tube lifespan. A small price to pay I would have thought to get started in CRT.
It does seem unfair to hear at times such waffle about New or Second Hand. Surely interested parties can make their own minds up to which direction they would like to tread.
I feel I can comment on this subject because I have owned one for some time.
The answer to your other question is go and see them all. Don't be sucked into anything unless you are happy!

Jagular.

It's too late you have been sucked in.....

Go and see Jin at SSuk. Have a look at an Ellie. It's great for a new unit. Bounce is common in many projectors and direct view tv's. As Jag says it depends on whether you find it a problem or not.

Also try and see a s/h unit at a forum members or at Rolands. You may find that a s/h unit and a really good scaler offers the best performance per pound. You need to go and have a look to find out though.

Let us all know how you are getting on

Gordon
