    Hi,
I have joined as I am interested in the below:
For Sale - Arcam A38 Integrated Amplifier | AVForums
I am thinking it has been sold but just wondering. I hope I have broken any rules/etiquette by this. I cannot post directly as I do not have high enough status.
    Kind Regards,
    Paul

Arcam A38 review from the experts at whathifi.com

what hifi did n't like it and they usually like everything :)
although maybe hifi company's also need to send a case of beer for 5 stars

spend some time reviewing many amps and make a short list
but personally i would recommend something like a New Yamaha adventage 3030 or the slightly older Yamaha 3020 over most amps these days
and can be found for 800/900 for the 3020 and 1400/1500 for the 3030 and then add something like a Arcam P7 and or P1s

or an AV9 and P7 and some P1s
and add a good sub or two etc
    or something along these lines

but a A38 on its own would be nowhere nr as good as the above combinations

I am happy with the sound of the A38 in my current set up. Despite the views of What HiFi.
I am firmly in the two channel camp and also want an integrated.
Thanks for the advice and helping my status here!

    no problem :)
although i thought the 2 channel camp had shut down due to lack of interest

but my advice still stands (to anyone) an A38 or similar still won't sound anywhere nr as good as a well set up multi channel system, and as we all know technology has moved on a bit
the Yamaha's sound beautiful in multi channel with some nice power amps attached
and the Yamaha's don't often break down (not that its good etiquette to say either in the Arcam forum)

the AV9 and P7 combination is far better than the A38 and can also do 2 channel when required
i have an AV9 and can't ever see me selling it, but also have some Yamaha's and they are overall quite alot better than the AV9 for sound and features

anyways makes no difference, aslong as we all enjoy what we buy

Thanks. Hmmm sounds like I might have to look at P7/AV9. Advice on Linn forum suggests AV kit not as good as two channel for music quality. But it is a case of beauty is in the ear of the beholder.....
    Thanks again.

What sources and file formats do you intend to use or have?

    Source: Linn Majik DS
    Format: Music FLAC 16bit/24bit
I am happy to look at multi channel with TV in set up but my primary interest is music and two channel.
However multi channel might surprise me..................

A £1000 would buy a nice stereo power amp (or 2 x monoblocs) or you could trade in your DS for a Majik DS-I

If you where to go down the Multichannel route unfortunately HDMI is where it's at, so I would steer clear of an older legacy processor that doesn't have HDMI unless your happy to have a 2 box solution (Oppo 95 & Legacy processor via MCH Analogue) and I've got the feeling that a current A_V Receiver in your price range won't have sufficient SQ to match the rest of your system

You could go for a S/H Oppo 105 and use that as a MCH Processor and feed your Majik DS via Analogue, however that won't leave more than £300 for your poweramp budget

Thanks. I will settle for integrated at moment and will come back to AV. When I get onto this I will certainly post again to here. Knowledgeable and proactive forum.
One question though - the Oppo 105 feeds the Majik DS. that confuses me - the Majik DS is a streamer how would this be fed via analogue? Sorry quick search on web has not solved for me.

Scrub that forgot the oppo doesn't have RCA analogue inputs

I assume that you prefer an integrated stereo amp over a poweramp for tone controls?

Or are you happier with a mechanical volume control over digital?

    i hope you don't overlook the AV9
its actually very versatile and is very similar to the A38 in many ways
just you get more - apart from the Power amp stages :)

and for someone who's not bothered about eqs or full HD sound, is an absolute bargain
i use my AV9 as a pre amp via my Yamaha processor, but also used it the same with various Yamaha receivers as the Yamaha's have more bite (which i prefer)
and the extras such as eqs and more sound fields

the Yamaha's or any source can be wired via the 2 channel or 6 channel inputs on the AV9 and then you get a blend of Yamaha and Arcam (or any receiver or pre/pro)

possibly best to take your time choosing as there is lots of nice stuff out there,
buyers have never had it so good
just beware of the turkeys that folks just want rid of

    Thanks.
I am going integrated for the moment as I have committed to purchase and meets my current needs.
I am going to trial AV9 and look at power amplification (P7 looks interesting). I guess I could use AV9 as pre amp with Linn Majik
I am pretty impressed with Arcam to date and have Arcam power amps currently. I am going to play around with set up. If I move out of Arcam I will probably favour Linn or Naim.
I am currently operating a buy local policy which whilst it may mean I am not getting the best at least simplifies my choices!
Have not considered volume control issue but will have it in mind now.
When I have had play and am ready for next move which will be several months away, I will return here.
    Kind regards,
    Paul

Well I trialled Naim and Linn & Arcam. Went for Arcam A38 sounds excellent , has more musicality than my Arcam A85/P90 setup with Linn Majik DS and Celestion A1 speakers.
Oddly (to me) I prefer the A38 on own not bi-amped with A32. Perhaps the P38 would be different story?
I am very happy with this at moment and will come back to the multi channel thing next year.
I would like to thank Mel morph2380 from whom I bought A38. A fair bargain and excellent to deal with at a time, even under trying circumstances.
