As this appears to be the receiver that comes with the HTSS(F)1300 all in one package, I shall move this thread to the all in ones forum. Plenty of discussion on the Sony 1300 already in there.

Hdmi already is an audio cable, and a better one than optical.
Optical gives dd and dts, and 2ch pcm. Hdmi gives dd, dts, dd+, dthd, dts hd ma, and multichannel pcm.

Your connections are correct - ensure ps3 is set to output lpcm over hdmi in video settings, and redo your ps3 sound settings - auto works fine. You'll then get dd / dts / dd+ / dthd / dts hd ma from your ps3.

Don't know about virgin boxes and whether it outputs 5.1ch over hdmi - you might want to check the satellite forums for that. I know with sky an optical cable is needed as they don't output 5.1ch over hdmi, only over optical.
