Is progressive scan anything to do with upscaling? Which will give the best picture on an HD Ready LCD TV?

Also, what is 'component'? For example the Denon Smart Life S-101 DVD player says it can output progressive scan via 'component'. Is this anything to do with HDMI?

As you can see I'm a little confused - I just want to buy a good, reasonably future proof setup... :(

component is a connecting variation, ie instead of scart, usually brings a better picture as it consists of red, green and blue cables but it will not carry sound. not too sure about the others though!
