Have found details on Yamaha's replacement for the AX-1... the AZ-1. The only info I could find came off the Japanese web site. As far as I can make out it has the following spec:

    8 channel amplifier
    Dolby Digital 5.1, 6.1 matrix
    Dolby Pro-logic II
    DTS 6.1 matrix and discrete
The new DTS music format 96/24
    Surround headphones socket!

And at last Yamaha has given it a new case design.

The release date (in Japan anyway) seems to point to March next year.

Interestingly the price seems to be 300,000 yen, on the same site the price of the current model (AX-1) is 350,000 yen!

See it for yourself on http://www.yamaha.co.jp/news/01100301.html

I am back. And I have more to say.

Full marks (sort of) for not wasting their customers money on an expensive THX licence. Don't get me wrong, THX is a fairly good fail-safe spec. for anyone wanting gear that 'delivers'. But I know Yamaha will spend the difference on top quality components and put the money where it belongs, in the sound quality.

Why then can they not employ my 8 year old daughter (she works cheap) to redesign the faceplate so that it no longer resembles a cross between a nuclear bunker, Dracula's coffin and Bridget Jones's @rse?

Well I think the amp itself looks gorgeous!!:p Gotta say though, the remote looks sh-one-t. A definite step back from the remote with my DSP A-1

This Amp is coming way to late in the day 4 me.

This is unfortunate 'cos I bet it's absolutely wonderful sounding, if not to everones taste esthetically. I await the Denon 11SR to test in Nov/Dec.

Come on Yamaha deliver earlier. You're competitors will have the Dolby Pro Logic II market sown up by March 2002, and that's only in Japan not the UK !!

    Regards

I think it'll look more discrete in black, the silver looks tacky. However, isn't it rather a let down that it only has in-built amplification for one rear speaker and not two ?

Maybe they accept the fact that the majority of people will not accommodate more than 6 speakers + sub in a set up. So I suppose it's more 'mass market' than revoluntionary.

And is it just me, but it seems that Yamaha are now the ones playing catch up with Denon rather than being market leaders?
First impression of the amp is it's the same sort of thing that's already available from Denon in its 3802!

Come on Yamaha, it needs to be a hell of a lot better than that.

Last price heard was Japanese Yen 245000.00 or approx US$ 2450.00

The amp is rumoured to be great. Esp with digital inputs. Plus the Yamaha trademark punchiness & soundstage.
