New Xbox 360 won't update

I'm tearing my hair out! When I start the 360, I'm told an update is available and I must do it - so I get it started the download bar gets right to the end and then I'm told its failed. I've got a wired connection, so it shouldn't be a connection problem and because I bought a Mac I can't download the updat onto disc because all the 360 sees is Mixed Data Disc so won't auto update.

Any ideas?

take it to a friends house, get them to update it,or ask a friend to put the update on a disc for you.
you could try to factory reset the 360 too,its a button combo, and deletes all patches/updates..

To perform the function, access 'memory' in the system blade, and then highlight the hard drive. Now press: Y, X, X, LB, RB, X, X. The following message should appear: "Do you want to perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices?"

If you initiate maintenance, the hard drive's cache will be cleared, including all software updates.

It should just update when you connect to Live really, perhaps something is up with your connection or something?

It starts to update but gets right to the end and says its failed. I've even done the port forwarding that MS suggested on the phone, but still to no success. Getting a mate to download it looks the only solution

try putting in a xbox game (not a 360 game) then connect to xbox live.

no just all update patches. think of it as defragging your hard drive.

I suggest you get a friend to burn the update for you, or check if your NAT is open in the dash network tests, this could be preventing the update. Or if its a new/repaired 360, it might be fudged.
