OK guys, Microsoft & DHL have come up thrumps again as I've just accepted delivery of 9 WMVHD DVDs

    They are:

    The Discovers
    Amazon
    Journey Into Amazing Caves
    Dolphins
    To The Limit
    The Magic of Flight
    The Living Sea
    Speed
    Stormchasers.

All originally created for Imax theatres.

All have DTS on the regular DVD & WMVHD versions on disc 2. Just home from work & off to bed so obviously I haven't "tested" any yet but just thought I'd let you guys know they should be available soon. The included letter states both 720p & 1080p with 5.1 sound with importantly, on-disc licencing :smashin:

Nice little surprise now wasn't it

    Thanks Kramer
I ordered "Amazon" this morning from Playusa.com. It is the only one on the list that states 2 disc version and WMVHD. I emailed playusa asking them to clarify if any of the others on the list were the two disc WMVHD versions.

    Yes, that's all of them.

Tried Stormchasers in the laptop yesterday & playback was perfectly smooth @ 720p (8.35mbit/s) @ 55/60% cpu load (AMD 64 3000+).

    Both 720p & 1080p are available.

I saw the Speed and Coral Reef ones in an IMAX cinema in canada and enjoyed them both. I would imagine the Coral Reef one would be very impressive, had very nice colours (except for the bits with dead coral ;) )

Thanks Laura, I have ordered two more of these from Amazon USA. Much cheaper but might have problems with customs.
Matt, I can vouch for the Coral Reef WMVHD it is excellent and unlike a regular film, you can look at it again and again.

some of the WMVHD titles are available from loaded247.com too.

    http://www.loaded247.com/index.php?s=1&p=S&title=IMAX&scope=reg1&all=1&start=20

Seems to be mainly the ones marked as available July 6th 2004. They don't have as many of them as amazon though.

You might be ok on the customs, they are less than £20 in value. Trying to remember whether I got stung when I bought a load of The Avengers dvd boxsets for the US.

    I am a newbie to playing hi-def dvds from a pc/laptop.

Would i be limited to the cable length if i wanted to play one of these dvds from my pc to a projector? The pc is in another room.

I have a Q. for those of you who have seen these wmvhd dvd's. Can you see banding in areas of gradating colour (more common than you'd imagine).

I have been looking at the wmv hd showcase clips and whilst in most respects they are lovely, when it comes to the problem mentioned above there seems to be no getting around the fact that because of heavy compression there is visible and detrimental picture distortion that I find takes you out of the HD experience.

    What are your views?

The clips look a bit crushed to me. I'm wondering if they've been compressed a bit more savagely for download reasons.

are you viewing on an lcd? their funky vertical viewing angle may have some impact on them looking crushed.

i'm going to nerd out now so excuse me a moment: my theory is that the codec used is only 8bit and the quantization round-off produces banding.

    any techies care to comment?

I've ordered some off Amazon too i.e. "Coral Reef Adventure" "Smart Travels" but have started looking to the German Amazon and eBay sites for other stuff...i.e. movies. Here is a list of WMVHD movies available. I have already ordered "The Italian Job" and "The Brothers Grimm" and should receive them soon. I've read in the technical details that the language is both English and German for these movies so that's great news. I've also bought a couple of others of eBay.de....."EVE" and "HD-Impressionen - Teil 1" The "EVE" movie is really nice, no dialogue, just a beautiful model walking around various locations like the Grand Canyon, Goblin Valley State Park (Galaxy Quest) and a Tropical Island. It's 77 mins long, stylishly done and all set to some nice music. The HD-Impressionen disc has some impressive HD travelogues in it but it was quite short, like the IMAX discs, about 50 mins of stuff and only in German.

So if you are feeling brave enough to order from a German website, I used a free translator, there are a few great WMVHD movie discs that can be bought. I think I'll get the "Tomb Raider" movies next.

    Word of warning guys.

These disks are known to contain Windows DRM and are only playable in the US as it downloads a licence and if your not in the US area it won't play!

I ordered T2 WMVHD and i had to spoof the US licence server to get it to work, was a flamin nightmare.

Please check first for DRM licencing!

Terminator Extreme was a pain wasn't it? I never got it to run in the end, just watched the standard edition. "Coral Reef Adventure" is fine if you can run Region 1 discs on your comp, which I can. I had to do a DRM Licence update but it worked fine. I'm sure most of the other IMAX films are OK too but I guess it's worth checking out if you can just to be safe. Apparently, a lot of the new WMV HD discs have "on disc" licensing now which is much better. The German discs I've had so far have been fine and we are in Region 2 anyway, so even if we did have to go online for any DRM licensing, we should be OK. The problem with the Terminator DRM was Geographical Location.

Received the two movies today. Had a quick look at them and here are the following details.....

    The Italian Job

Looks more like good quality upscaled DVD but I have to view it on my projector before I make a final judgement.
No DRM on this disc, it played straight out of the Box. English Language soundtrack is defaulted with German text on menus and cover.

    Brothers Grimm

Looks stunning, real HD quality. There is DRM on this but it only took a minute or two to acquire the licence online. No regional coding problems like T2. The intial soundtrack is Deutsch but you can change it to the original English soundtrack in the menu which is in German. DVD cover is also in German.

Looking forward to watching them on my projector soon.
