I’m still a bit sceptical about this, it’s looking very formulaic…

Personally, I'm very disappointed that they've updated the setting rather than follow the book. War of the Worlds has been one of my favorite Sci-fi books ever since I read it the first time. Thus, the original War of the Worlds movie has probably been my biggest movie disappointment ever. The first (and only) time I watched it, I soooooooo looked forward to see those giant walking tripods, so imagine my disappointment when seeing the 1950s setting, with those flying saucers instead of the tripods :(

Had somehow gotten the impression that this time they would stay true to the book, but alas, the first trailer shattered that illusion..

Still hope it's a good movie of course, but to me, it'll still not really be 'War of the Worlds'. Do look forward to see Dakota Fanning again though, as I found her extremely impressive for someone so young, in the 'Taken' series.

    Cheers,
    Erling

I think it's in good hands. Rarely do either Spielberg or Cruise make turkeys. Loved the soundtrack although strangely have never watched any of the film/tv titles :suicide:
I'm really looking forward to this one. I really enjoyed AI by the way, thought it was an excellent film,

to be honest i like it better sometimes when a movie doesn't stay entirely faithful to the source material. Firstly, you don't know exactly what's going to happen and secondly, they can explore avenues that weren't really explored much by the source. In the case of War Of The Worlds, the book or audio versions were very good, but on the big screen, i think something on a grander scale is required. Hopefully they'll alter the ending slightly as well, because suddenly dying from germs is a bit.. well.. lame. Perhaps this time around the hero of the story could actually have something to do with the destruction of the aliens, for instance he discovers their weakness to germs and manages to tell the government, which causes them to send plague bombs down on the aliens, forsaking a lot of the humans in the process. Extremely cheesy but doesn't mean it can't look cool anyway ;)

I think alot of people are hoping it wont be 'another america saves the world just in time' alien invasion film and if they keeps the original ending it would defently be a different kind of invasion film but whether they will do that is another question, they might think the audience wouldnt understand so no doubt it will end with Tom Cruise releasing a virus that kills off the invaders but I would love to be prooved wrong.

yeah i liked it too, though i'm always tempted to turn it off when the kid is under water trying to reach his "mother" for what could be all of eternity as i feel that should have been the ending. i like depressing endings ;)

I think it´s kinda disapointing that great directors like Spielberg and Jackson can´t find original stuff to do, the outer space thing and king kong have been done so many times, bad version, good version, funny versions etc... it´s all been done. These movies will probably look awesome.. but I´m most definetly not excited about these movies.

    Erling,

    I hope you've noticed the Pendragon production which seems to be trying to stay more faithful to the book. See here;

    http://www.pendragonpictures.com/WOTWKEY.html

Should hopefully get a better distribution on the back of the Spielberg version.

I've so wanted to see a proper authentic movie of the book for a long time. I've virtually storyboarded it in my head.

Imagine the part with the steam ships and the tripods, that would look incredible done right :smoke:

The pendragon version is a joke!
Looks like it was shot on DV.

    Terrible.

Just had a look at the "Theatrical Trailer" pathetic. These guys are taking the mickey. They give low budget film-makers a bad name. Drivel. There should be a law against this rubbish.

I very much doubt Spielberg / Cruise would let this turn into a cruddy ID4-a-like. For a start there is no wise-cracking Will, no president in a bi-plane, and no 'Apple Mac to Martian' data cables.

IMHO Spielberg has never really created a movie as bad as ID4 (or Godzilla for that matter). Judging by the trailer, the heat ray effects and the small glimpse of the Martians' (if they are Martians) tripod look amazing - especially as they are only pre-editing effects.

Also, there are 3 War Of the Worlds movies in production - this Spielberg / Cruise collaboration, the animated version of Jeff Wayne's hit muscial, and a period effort from Pendragon Pictures.

Saw trailer of this day before yesterday at the movies.

Didn't know what it was at first. To be honest I didn't guess what it was until the film title appeared!

Still, looks like it's gonna be interesting to say the least!

I’m really looking forward for this one maybe more than Star Wars episode 3, please don’t get me wrong I’m a Star Wars closet guy, no I just like science fiction, and no I don’t dress up as a stormtrooper or Darth Vader for that mater…

Did you know Orson wells caused such an upset when The war of the worlds was broadcasted on Halloween night October 30th 1938, for those who turned there radios on just after the show started, they actually believed the world was under attack from those little green men from the small little red planet, now that is what I call power house radio…

I have found a web page and some more war of the worlds facts…

    Good Gawd!

    Anyway, back on topic...

"War of the Worlds" is a favourite book and the '50s movie is a favourite film. The details and the setting changed of course, but the movie remained true to the essence of Welles' vision, and is one of the Cold War era's Science Fiction gems.

From what I've seen of the trailers, this new version certainly engenders the feeling of Welles' "...rout of humnaity...". Speilberg is one of the few Hollywood directors with a respect for the literary source and a consistent track record for quality film-making.

    I for one can't wait.

Saw a trailer for this at the new star wars film, can't believe they put that trailer in front of such an audience over the 2nd trailer on the web site, Wouldn't leave an impression on nobody.

I saw it at the Ep III showing too and tbh wasn't that excited. Will still watch it though, it definitely seems like a 'cinema' film. Lots of bangs, explosions and aliens.
