I'm very interested in this. From reading the early responses, it appears to be a definite improvement over 2.1 for HDMI->DVI-D behaviour. Hope things also look good for black crush and colorspace issues via DVI-D. I'll be waiting for the discs to be issued and a download to appear. :)

I haven't gone back to the thread since the wee hours this morning, but basically no new features, perhaps a little faster boot (especially for DVI-D people) and several said their DVI-D problem was solved -- there were few details when I looked, but one did mention it solved his direct from player to Lumagen DVI-D problem.

The update apparently came on line Friday afternoon/evening.

    Hi.
I updated mine successfully. It took about an hour. When I switched the player back on I got "01 system error".

    R.I.P.

    (It's dead).

I also updated and it does appear to resolve the hand shake issue that 2.1 introduced with the Lumagen.

It was only released yesterday and I don't think Tosh US will have issued any CD's yet so no image yet. Until they do the only way is to connect the player to the net AFAIK.

The way it works is Toshiba only provides the update via download direct to the player RJ-45 port, and via CD posted direct to the owner (if the owner previously requested it) -- no other way todate. As there is currently no way to obtain an ISO image direct from the player (may never be), no image can be available until Toshiba actually posts the update CD's and the recipient's start receiving them.

Consequently, since Toshiba doesn't usually send out the update CDs until a couple or so weeks after the on-line update release, and since there is usually a week or two delay before someone with a disc makes it available for download, we can expect to wait awhile.

Hopefully, we'll be able to download an image in roughly a month. :)

Downloaded and installed via ethernet port of HD-XA1 and it worked fine.

Took ages to download though, even with 10Mb broadband.

Try again later when USA is asleep, i.e. in the morning, their servers seem to have limited bandwidth.

So we're saying that unless you use DVI to a scaler, it's really not worth upgrading the firmware?

Just updated to 2.2 and it seems to be the best firmware yet.

Okay I haven't watch a movie in full, but 422 over HDMI to my Lumagen works PERFECTLY.

When you start up the player it outputs 422, when you play a SD DVD it outputs 422, when you play a HD-DVD it outputs 422 and when you play a mini HD-DVD (burnt on DVD +/-R media) it outputs 422, when you go into the set-up menu it outputs 422. Haven't had any handshaking problems.

Haven't had chance to test BTB/WTW, but a post on Gordons Lumagen forum suggests this is also fixed.

    Finally...

So you can now use 4:2:2 without a green title screen.

I am upgrading, if Tosh can just sort out the couple of French releases that wont play in a future firmware then I will be a very happy customer.

The point is to hopefully correct firmware associated issues and to add capabilities upcoming HD DVD titles will utilize.

Also, in case you aren't aware yet -- HD DVD is already non-regional. Or perhaps all you ever do with your HD DVD player is play SD DVD? (Or perhaps you don't even have an HD DVD player -- and this is purely an editorial comment?)

Universal is currently investigating an apparent manufacturing problem with that title.

Thanks Trevor. I read that on hidefdigest and sent a mail to their link to Universal.

As I'm in the UK I bet the chances of getting a replacement are slim to none!

But will keep an open mind until I receive a reply from them.

Thanks for the heads up Rob100, updated mine last night. 4:2:2 and the Lumagen do indeed behave perfectly now :)

Also, I used to get a freeze every time during Happy Feet in the underwater chase scene, Happy feet now plays perfectly.

They sure do, no more switch on rituals. I'm finding I can switch either on first and don't need to power down the Lumagen if I've been using another input prior to using the HD-A1. Let's hope they don't break this in the next update

I haven't done any tests on problematic discs yet to see if this is any better. I've always found it to be a bit random and I think the quality of the discs is 90% of the problem.

I bought Happy Feet on BR and this played perfectly on the PS3 :)

Get the 2.2 ISO image from here

Link posted by Davis Susilo on AVS (link here). Other users on AVS have d/l'ed and updated players without problems.

Just updated my 1.0 RCA HDV5000 to 2.2 Toshiba from that download -- a shame about the splash screen change :(.

It came up cleanly and appears to be fine -- haven't spotted any picture anomalies yet, but haven't tested much either. My display devices are both DVI-D, but they are fed via an HDMI splitter from an HDMI receiver.

It's easy to do, just download the ISO image, use Nero or perhaps "IMGBurn" to burn the ISO as an image onto a CD-R, and then reboot your player and load the disc. You have to have your TV display turned on so that you can respond to the menu that pops up after the player loads the CD. Tell it "YES" to perform the update and then just let it do it's thing (the player display will very gradually count up to 100Pct, and then go into standby mode).

I did a reboot and reinitialize after it completed, but I'm not sure whether that's necessary. Have fun :)!

Never sure about firmware upgrades. At present running v2.0 my HD-A1 works perfectly. Is this 2.2 going to be of benefit to me or is it mainly a bug fix for those who's HD-A1s have been having issues?
