Anyone tried using 'The DVD Place' (http://www.thedvdplace.co.uk/)? Its a UK site that claims to be able to provide any R1 DVD for £14 plus £1 postage.

    Is this site for real?

Just been looking at the site - you can download their catalogue, and some of the prices seem a bit too good to be true. Nearly all individual discs are £14 - some of the US websites can't sell certain titles that cheaply, so it seems a little suspicious. Box sets are only £39, and the Ultimate Toy Box set is £28 - given that the cheapest online price is $42 plus postage, this again seems suss.

They also give a UK based address, which is strange - it is illegal to import and resell US goods from a UK based company, which is why Play247 are based in Jersey.

As Gary says, the best bet is to try buying from them - if they fail to deliver, just get your credit card company to refund the money.

    Yeah, me too...

I am not the daring type, and I appologise for waiting to see how someone else fares first, but I just think the way they are set up on the net and the fact that they are in the UK is a bit odd.

I will watch what happens with this one!!

I've emailed them this morning with a few questions (eg. shipping policies, email notification etc) and asking for a quote for 7 DVDs:

    Yojimbo (Criterion)
    Sanjuro (Criterion)
Ceux qui m'aiment prendront le train
    In The Company Of Men
    Ma Saison Préférée
    Rumble Fish
    Snow Falling On Cedars

    Amazon.com price (approx) £124
    Their prices (if genuine): £98

    I'll post what they say.

I e-mailed them from work this morning. I simply asked how they could legally sell R1 DVD's from a company registered in the UK.

    No reply yet!

As Jon says, the sig is from The Thing.

It is spoken by Clark just as MacReady and the others arrive at the dog pen to see what all the noise and wierd sounds are coming from.

I heard back from them this morning.

They say they don't part ship (ie they hold until the order is complete) unless I want to pay individual shipping on each disc.

They also say they don't send email notification but will if I ask them to do so.

No real answer as to how long I might wait for the DVDs to be delivered, though.

I'll order some of my September titles from them -probably.

Looks like APPRIA40WR (Gary was sooo much easier to type) is a Kurosawa fan too.

Off topic (sorry Blade) but have you tried the new realtime strategy/action PC game Shogun: Total War? Set in 16th Century Japan, as Daiyamo you develop your territories and wage war or form alliances with other warlords with the ultimate aim to become Shogun. Yes you too can fight battles on Kurosawas scale and re-enact the effect of musketeers on calvary just like the scene in Ran (God, got to get that out on DVD too) .

Pretty good game with gorgeous landscapes and that's all I've been playing since it came out. It does have a number of bugs though but a patch is due to be released shortly. Check out the main website www.totalwar.com and the best fan site www.totalwar.org. Some of the battle stories posted in the forums make great reading.

    Cheers

Just read a response on the DVD Times from the guy who ordered from The DVD Place.

He says 2 days after the order someone attempted to charge £2000 to his credit card (his card company blocked it), he is not sure if it was The DVD Place as he ordered this week and the transaction was dated 7th August.

Any one else tried them ?

I read the guy's post on that forum, and I can't see any reason for thinking that dvdplace had anything to do with the attempted debit.

    Complete nonsense, I'd say.

This post was also on that forum:

    "Anyway some digging around turns up that they are on an industrial estate in Lancaster, trading under the name of Gadgetzone International Ltd;

    GADGETZONE INTERNATIONAL LTD
    CAMERON HOUSE
    WHITE CROSS
    LANCASTER
    LANCASHIRE LA1 4XQ

They were only incorporated on Monday - draw from that what you will and a company called Gadgetzone Ltd was wound up in 1997 by a Peter Gotham (but could be no relation whatsoever) that was in Southend though.

The home page was registered on 12th July this year, so they took a while to register the company?"

Hmmmmm. We'll just have to wait and see.
