Good Afternoon, Everyone!

Welcome back, to Pooch’s fortnightly TV Updates! :) Those of you who follow my little :D ramblings will know that I’ve been absent for a month, taking a much-needed rest from things. But, as always, I can’t deprive you all from my recommendations for too long, and thus, I’m back to inform you of all that’s good (and even, not so good) on TV. :)

Those of you who’ve never bothered to look at my postings, well here’s a brief intro to what the Updates are about. This update covers the latter-part of August, and the first day of the month of September, and as we start heading ever closer to the end of the summer months, the Autumn TV schedules will soon be kicking-in, with new shows from across the Pond, and new seasons of old favourites. My job, is purely to try and sift the wheat from the chaff, and get to showcase some of the numerous worthwhile material that exists out in the world of television. For those of you who find themselves uttering the words “There’s never anything good on TV”, I am your fortnightly antidote. I do all the hard work for you folks, searching TV schedules high and low, to find the good stuff, of which many is often hidden deep in the middle of the night, or buried on obscure channels.

One small piece of TV news for you all: Five has the terrestrial rights to the dark and gritty crime drama series “Criminal Minds” (Season 1), which has just finished airing on LivingTV. The good news, is that Five will be airing Season 1 in the proper Widescreen format! The show starts on 7th September 2006. :)

Well, that’s about all for now, so let’s get right down to why we’re all here: what’s coming up this week on TV. As always, all details are correct at the time of posting, but sometimes schedules may change. It’s always worth checking back in this thread, to see if any amendments have been made. Enjoy!

Saturday 26th August
Frasier Weekend – 9:00am-11:05pm / 12:40-3:40am / 3:55-6:00am
If you’ve never seen this amazingly funny spin-off from “Cheers”, then here’s you chance to watch all of Season 1 back-to-back, over 2 days. Some episodes will be repeated later in the day. The series continues tomorrow. See your Sky, Cable or Freeview EPG listings for episode details. (Paramount 2)

FILM: The Towering Inferno (15) – 4:00-6:55pm
Enjoyably silly B-movie classic with Steve McQueen, Faye Dunaway and Paul Newman, as an all-new, purpose-built skyscraper develops an electrical fault, that turns into a nightmare for the new tenants, staff and engineers. If you don’t mind some dated action scenes, and corny dialogue, this is quite a fun way to spend your afternoon. Although the film has a 15 certificate, there’s nothing here that’s likely to upset or offend anyone, except for very young children. There is occasional mild bad language, and one or two scenes of fire raging out of control trapping people, but other than this, it’s family-friendly. Older kids can enjoy the silliness of it, whilst adults can play “Spot the Celebrity”! Showing uncut and in Widescreen. (Channel 4)

Invasion – 6:00-8:00pm
Repeat of the sci-fi/fantasy drama shown earlier this year on Channel 4. As long as you don’t object to occasional edits for nudity and language, here’s a chance to see the only season of this show, from the beginning. Tonight is episodes 1 and 2, that form the Pilot Movie. Eddie Cibrian (of “Third Watch” fame) stars. (E4)

NEW: Navy NCIS – 7:25-8:15pm / 8:30-9:25pm
Double-bill to start off all-new (to terrestrial TV fans) Season 2 of this fun crime drama about a team of investigators who deal only with crimes in the US Navy. Sadly, the prints being used by Five are identical to those aired last year by satellite channel FX, and thus, the colour is too intense resulting in skin appearing bright orange at times, and also episodes are airing in 4:3. Boo, hiss! The show is good, and it’s worth sticking with. One word of warning, however, and that is regards the show’s content. Episodes are being shown uncut and uncensored, but many of the Season 2 shows feature quite strong and graphic scenes of autopsy footage, which parents may feel is inappropriate for younger audience members. Please be aware of this. (Five)

Law & Order: Criminal Intent – 8:00-9:00pm
Tonight sees the final episode of Season 4 get its UK premiere. As some viewers may have noted, Hallmark have not shown all of the episodes made. The reason being that there are several episodes that deal with themes and issues which Hallmark have considered may cause offence, as they frequently deal with issues that have been in the news, e.g. terrorism, bomb-makers, suicide-bombers, etc, and have delayed their transmission. These episodes will be shown, but in a Saturday night, post-9pm slot. More details, as I find it out.

Debbie Does Dallas Uncovered – 11:20pm-12:25am
Documentary about the infamous adult film “Debbie Does Dallas”, and interviews and insights with those who were a part of this notorious movie, that kick-started the home-video adult movie industry, but to which hidden beneath the surface, was a veil of drugs, financial kick-backs. criminal activity and other sordid secrets. Intelligent and worth w watch, if you can cope with the topic. As you’d expect, this show contains adult material of a sexually explicit nature and has very strong language throughout. For adults only. Showing uncensored. (Channel 4)

FILM: Audition (18) – 12:15-2:25am
Excellent, and genuinely unnerving Japanese horror thriller from Takashi Miike, the king of Asian Horror movies! The first hour of this film, follows a lonely man’s attempts to meet a new lady, after the loss of his first wife. The second hour, sees the film crank the nerve-shredding factor upto 10! Do not underestimate this film! Stick through the first hour, and you will be justly rewarded with one of the finest, grimmest and most unrelentingly uncompromising endings seen in any recent horror movie outings. An incredibly raw movie, that will make men think twice about how they treat women. The film contains some scenes of extremely distressing violence towards the end, and some strong language! Don’t say you haven’t been warned! Not for the squeamish, or easily offended! :lesson: Showing uncut and in Widescreen. In Japanese, with English Subtitles. Repeated late on Friday night, at 1:05-3:15am (Film4)

Sunday 27th
Frasier Weekend – 9:00am-11:05pm /2:55-6:00am
The weekend concludes today, with the final half of Season 1. Some episodes are repeated later in the day. See your Sky, Cable or Freeview EPG listings for episode details. (Paramount 2)

FILM: Song Of The South (PG) – 10:00-11:35am
Rare showing for one of the more contentious of Walt Disney’s famous films. When a young boy is taken on holiday, and learns that his parents are to divorce, he runs away to be with his father. However, the boy’s uncle has other plans, and tricks him into returning home. It sounds completely innocuous, but the reason why it’s still considered so controversial even now, some 60 years after its initial release, is because of the portrayal of black people. There’s a nasty and rather non-PC vain of negative black stereotypes that many people will feel is inappropriate for younger audiences, and ones that nowadays, Disney would rather wish had never been given screen-time. As a film, it’s okay, with the mixture of animation and live-action, and the many, many hit songs it spawned, including “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah”. But the racism is very unsavoury, and this may turn-off many viewers. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. (BBC2)

A Nero Wolfe Mystery: Wolfe Goes Out – 11:35am-1:05pm
No details available for this episode, as it’s a combination of two episodes from the 2001 series, but for which no internet episode guide has information on. I think it’s from Season 2 though, if that helps anyone. A good show, and an enjoyable series. I just wish the BBC would show the entire 29 episodes, properly, and in the correct order, rather than just the feature-length/two-parters. Oh well. (BBC2)

Smallville – 2:20-4:20pm
Two episodes this week: numbers 7 and 8 respectively, from Season 5. (Channel 4)

FILM: Frankenstein (PG) – 3:00-4:25pm / 1:40-3:00am
The uncut, fully-restored 1931 masterpiece from director James Whale, with Boris Karloff as Frankenstein’s monster. A superb film, with some beautiful sequences. Highly Recommended. Black and White. The sequel, “Bride Of Fankenstein” can be seen tomorrow at 3pm, and later at 2am. (Film4)

Monday 28th
SCHEDULE CHANGE: The District
If you’re currently following the Season 3 repeats on Hallmark, today’s episode will air at 6am, and repeated at 3am, as opposed to the usual slots of 7pm and 2am! From tomorrow, episodes will air every weekday at 7pm only! (Hallmark Channel)

Bank Holiday Movie Choice
If it ends-up raining, then feel free to choose any or all of the following films, which air throughout the daytime. BBC1 has the excellent Pixar animation “A Bug’s Life” (U certificate, 3:30-5:00pm), which is brilliant and – in my opinion – their finest work. BBC2 gives us the much-loved caper film “Bugsy Malone” (PG certificate, 11:25am-12:55pm) starring a very young Scott Baio, and directed by Alan “Angel Heart” Parker, whilst Five offers-up the romantic drama “Corrina, Corrina” (12 certificate, 3:20-5:30pm) starring Ray Liotta and Whoopi Goldberg.

NEW: Deal Or No Deal – 4:10-4:55pm
Love it or loathe it, it’s back for a second run, with more new contestants trying to beat the banker, and win £250,000! Yes, it’s simply a case of guesswork, but the greatness about the game is whether you the viewer would make the same choices as the contestants, if you were in their position. Guessing has never been so much fun! Noel Edmunds returns to host the show. (Channel 4)

The 2006 Emmy Awards Ceremony Live! – 8:00pm-Midnight
The Oscars for the US TV industry. Watch the contenders fight for Best Show, Best Actor/Actress, etc, from shows like “CSI”, “24”, “Law And Order”, “Judging Amy”, “Everwood”, and many, many more. Edited highlights, can be seen later on tonight, between 1:00 and 3:00am. (E! The Entertainment Channel – Sky Digital 155, NTL 170)

Sex And The City Night – 9:00pm-4:00am
Want an evening to yourself, with Carrie Bradshaw and the girls? Enjoy random episodes from all six series. A complete six-season repeat, starts tomorrow night at 10:00pm, with episodes airing each weekday. (Paramount Comedy Channel)

FILM: Flashdance (15) – 11:20pm-12:55am
It inspired the hilarious pastiche in “The Full Monty”, and is loved more for it’s music, than the movie itself, but it set a trend, and is still one of the most memorable 1980’s films. Jennifer BEals stars as a female welder, who tries to make it in her male-dominated career by day, and learn to be a dancer by night. It’s glossy, and trashy, but there’s still that certain je ne sais quois about it. Contains some bad language, and some sexual material. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. (BBC1 most regions. Scotland and Northern Ireland may vary!)

Invasion – 11:50pm-1:40am and 2:40-3:30am
Three episodes airing tonight, (numbers 3, 4 and another – possibly a repeat of one of those two). Three and four are repeated again, next Saturday teatime. (E4)

Ricky Gervais Meets Larry David – 12:35-1:40am
Another chance to see this documentary/comedy about the two comedy giants, interviewing one another, and looking at highlights of their work. Contains very strong language and adult material throughout. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. (More4)

Tuesday 29th
NEW: Supernanny – 9:00-10:00pm
I wouldn’t normally recommend this show, as I loathe it, and the subject matter – that of getting bad kids to be good kids. But tonight’s episode is slightly unusual. Instead of Supernanny Jo Frost having to tame three tearaway boys, she finds that their violent and verbally abusive behaviour is not actually their fault, but that of the boys’ parents! So Supernanny, is forced to take drastic measures: to cure the boys’, she has to cure the parents volatile behaviour first, including stopping them from using explicit and foul language at their kids, as well as the threat of violent abuse to keep their brood under control! Expect very strong language, some occasionally upsetting scenes and material you may find offensive. (The sight of one of the boys, who’s just three-years old, calling their father something extremely unmentionable, is liable to get the goat of many viewers!) This episode is also being repeated on Friday night at 9pm, on E4! (Channel 4)

CSI: Miami / CSI:NY Crossover Episode Special – 9:00-11:00pm
Held-over from the original run, tonight we get to see a special crossover double-bill storyline. In “Felony Flight”, a serial killer is on transport to New York, but ends-up on the lose in Miami, and the bodies soon start to mount-up. Horation and his team start to investigate, but find that they need some help from their neighbourhood CSI’s. Part two, in CSI: NY, is entitled “Manhattan Manhunt”, as the serial killings start to infiltrate into the Big Apple. Detective Mac Taylor is accompanied by Horatio Caine, and the two teams are forced to put their best foot forward, to stop the killer at all costs. “24” fans (who have seen Season 4 of that show) will be interested to note that the killer is played by none other than James Badge Dale, ex-partner to Jack Bauer, and ex-love interest to Kim Bauer! Contains some adult material, and scenes of gore. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. This feature-length is split-up into two separate episodes, so please set any recordings accordingly! (Five)

BlackJack: Ace Point Game – 11:25pm-1:00am
The second episode, but because the BBC have aired it in the wrong order, it’s ending-up as the third one to be aired. Also airs on BBC1 Wales at the slightly later time of 11:55pm-1:30am tonight. Contains some strong language. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. (BBC1)

Ozone – 3:40-3:55am
Award-winning short film about a man who gets an unexpected surprise, when he takes the lift up to the 200th floor of his futuristic office block. Surreal, but quirky little movie, that’s worth a look/recording. (Channel 4)

Wednesday 30th
First Wave – 8:00-9:00pm
Return of the hit US sci-fi series, after a lengthy absence. Sadly, there is no longer a late-night, same-night repeat. Continuing from where we left off, with Season 2, Episode 7. (ITV4)

Seinfeld – 8:00-9:00pm
I’ve never seen this famous US comedy show, with stand-up comedian Jerry Seinfeld, but maybe I should finally give it a go, as tonight sees the start of another run of all 12 (?) Seasons made. Season 1, episodes 1 and 2 air, and the show continues every weekday at the same time. (Paramount 2)

Spooks – 9:30-10:30pm
Repeat of all of the first series, of the British-made spy drama show. (BBC4)

NEW: Respectables – 10:30-11:00pm
All-new British sitcom, but unlike anything you’ve ever seen or heard of before. Created by “Have I Got News For You” creator Harry Thompson, this was his final piece of work, before his untimely death, at the tail-end of 2004. The scripts were finished one Friday evening in November 2004, he married his long-time girlfriend the following Monday, and a few hours later, he had died at the young age of just 45. This is the result of those scripts, directed by Dominic Brigstocke (who has just finished playing himself in the BBC comedy series “Rob Brydon’s Annually Retentive”! In the first of six episodes, an unhappily married man called Michael, falls deeply in love with another woman, Hayley. There’s just one, minor problem: she’s a prostitute, he’s her client, and he is trying to stop his wife from finding-out about his double-life, which he has been living for several months! The series is set in a fictional, London-based brothel, but although the topic might seem fairly sordid, the comedy comes from the mismatch of the world of the sellers of sex, and that of everyone else. Should be a show to keep an eye on. Will contain some strong language, and occasional adult material. Partly-produced with Paramount, who air the series, 48 hours later on, on Friday nights at 11:00pm each week, for the duration of the entire series run, giving you a second chance to watch or record each episode. (Five)

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy – 10:30-11:20pm
Repeat of the multi-award winning seven episode spy drama from John Le Carre, and with Alec Guinness in the lead role, as spy George Smiley. First of seven episodes. Series continues each weekday night. (BBC4)

NEW: The Apprentice USA – 11:20pm-12:15am
Late-night transmission of all new Season 3, in which a member of the US public tries to gain a job with multi-millionaire Donald Trump, and the Trump Empire. Day one sees the two teams meet one another, before they are thrown into their first task – sell a new food item for Burger King, called the Steak Whopper! Episodes will air each weekday night, at approximately the same time. (BBC2)

Thursday 31st
NEW: F***-Off, I’m Fat! – 9:00-10:00pm
British comedian Ricky Grover, who currently stands at 21 stone, investigates how modern-day society deals with people bigger than the norm. Tonight, he looks at how fat people have to deal with day-to-day tasks, like shopping for clothes, public transport seats, and buying (or not buying) food. Contains some strong language. Repeated at 11:30pm tonight. (BBC3)

NEW: The Sopranos – 10:00-11:10pm
The multi-dysfunctional, Mafioso family are back, for one final, lengthy season! Split into two-parts, (12 episodes now, followed by a final eight-part mini-saga early next year, which is still being written and filmed), Tony and his crew are finally feeling the pressure, from all sides. His recent reunion with Carmela is falling apart, due to his own unfaithfulness, and Carmela’s :censored:-off, to the point that she’s even willing to break the Mafia code of asking for a divorce. Meanwhile, Junior Soprano having beaten the FBI’s entrapment trial, is finally seeing the ironic side of life, when he begins to fall severely ill, and turns to shocking methods to deal with the situation. Adrianna, currently in hiding from the FBI, after being a rat, is forcing Christopher to choose between her or Tony. His decision, doesn’t go down well, with his friends and family. And, with all of this, what about Dr Melfi? How will Tony deal with her knowledge of his “job”, and her rebuttal to his romantic wooing? Things aren’t going to be smooth – for anyone. Contains very strong language, graphic violence and scenes of nudity and drug usage. Each episode is also repeated later the same night. Channel 4 viewers will be able to see the series start, in about 6 weeks time. (E4)

NEW: Grey’s Anatomy – 10:00-11:00pm
All-new Season 2 episodes of the enjoyable, but syrupy US medical drama, with Ellen Pompeo as Meredith Grey. Although this is a UK premiere, the series is not being shown in Widescreen. Viewers who do wish to see it in Widescreen, will be able to see it on Five, early next year. (LivingTV)

FILM: Slap Shot (18) – 11:10pm-1:30am
Brutally funny, and outrageously profane, sports-comedy with Paul Newman as the coach of an ice hockey squad who are willing to resort to any tactics, to win their games. It’s raw, shocking, and frankly, quite rude, but it is hilarious as well, even if you have little interest in sport. Recommended. Contains very strong language throughout. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. (TCM)

Friday 1st September
NEW: Now And Again – 7:00-8:00pm
Dark but intelligent sci-fi series, starring John Goodman, Eric Close, Dennis Haysbert and Heather Matarazzo. When a man is killed in a train-accident, his body is disposed of, but his brain is implanted into the body of a genetically-modified younger man. The new man, is designed to help the government out on secret missions, but problems arise when the attributes and memories of the former man’s identity, begin to reveal themselves, and get discovered by the man’s wife and daughter. Superb drama, clever, innovative… and as is the norm, killed-off after just 22 episodes. Highly Recommended if you’ve never seen it on either ITV3 or ITV1. Showing uncut, but episode one does contain scenes at the very beginning, that may be deemed unsuitable and a little too gory for younger viewers. This drama wasn’t filmed in Widescreen, so it will be shown in the correct and original fullscreen format. (ITV4)

NEW: The Charlotte Church Show – 10:00-10:50pm
Already having been in the news, for certain sketches being deemed offensive on a religious note, it will be interesting to see how and what actually ends-up in this show, which is pre-recorded just 24 hours before transmission. This could either be the best thing on Channel 4 in ages, or the biggest disaster since “The Word”! Contains strong language, and adult material. (Channel 4)

NEW: Da Ali G Show – 10:50-11:20pm
He’s back! The leader of the Staines Massive hits UK screens once more, after his recent sojourn to Cannes, and the photos of that lime-green tackle-holding piece of underwear! Same stuff as ususal, for which you’ll either love him, or loathe him. Definitely an acquired taste. Contains strong language, and other adult material. This series has already been shown on E4, earlier this year! (Channel 4)

SCHEDULE CHANGE: The Shield – Midnight-1:00am
Due to one of those time-filling “countdown” showx, the latest episode of the hit US crime series, is now airing one hour later than normal! If you have your Sky+ boxes set to automatically record this show each week, you may want to double-check that it’s aware of the time-change. The series should return to its usual 11pm timeslot, as of next Friday night. (Five)

FILM: Midnight Movies (15) – 2:35-4:20am
Superb documentary exploring cult, horror, exploitation and B-movies, from the late 1960’s through to the 1990’s, and the love/hate relationship cinema has with them. Are they just mindless pieces of throwaway entertainment, or do any of them have valid points to make about the society of the time? Contains some strong language, some scenes of gory violence, and some adult material. Highly Recommended if you have an interest in this area of cinema. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. (ITV4)

And, that’s it, ladies and gents! Eight pages of what’s worth watching, and shows you shouldn’t miss! :) Feedback, corrections and updates are always welcome, and can be posted in this very same thread. For now, though, I’m off for a rest, and I’ll return in another fortnight or so. Thanks for reading my post!

Criminal Minds should do decent business for Five, it's a bit of slow burner and not as fast paced or flashy as the CSI franchise but that has a lot more to do with the actual role of profilers than the actual styling of the show.
Mandy Patinkin makes a welcome return to the small screen after his role in Dead Like Me:)

Good to see The Sopranos back on UK telly but the recap/synopsis sounds like it's from season 5:)

Starburst,

"The Sopranos" synopsis, is from the end of Season 5, and was meant purely as a reminder for fans, of what happened at the end of the final episode or two. I have no idea about what happens in Season 6, and hence, didn't use the internet to search for plotlines, as I don't want to ruin the show for others or myself. :)

And, yes, "Criminal Minds" is a great show. The Season 1 finale is great, and I hope Season 2 comes soon. :smashin:

Sopranos fans do need reminders, not exactly a prolific show.
Good to hear you put more thought into it then I did:)

Welcome back Pooch. But how can you call yourself a TV fan if you've never seen Seinfeld  Do yourself a favour and watch!

Hi Pooch

BlackJack: Ace Point Game – 11:25pm-1:00am
The second episode, but because the BBC have aired it in the wrong order, it’s ending-up as the third one to be aired.

I'm curious as to why you accuse the BBC of showing these shows in the wrong order.

Here is a chronological list of Colin Friel's productions - (and note the good news - three more Blackjacks made this year)
http://www.mook-e.com/bio/friels.htm

Here is an article describing the filming of the second episode - the first of Trilogy1 - which is 'In The Money'.
http://www.if.com.au/Press/2003/10/21.html

Here is an OZ tv review discussing BlackJack IV - Ace Point Game.
http://www.smh.com.au/news/tv-reviews/blackjack-iv-ace-point-game/2006/08/18/1155408004267.html

Which source are you using?

The BBC seem to have swapped Sweet Science and In The Money for both broadcasts. The Australian Television website gives dates for BBC and Australian first showing which makes it even more complicated as Ace Point Game seems to have been shown before In The Money. Seems it doesn't really matter what order providing the Pilot (now entitiled Murder Archive by the BBC) is shown first.

Hope the above is right - still sleepy after a late night watching tennis.

http://www.australiantelevision.net/blackjack/trilogy.html

At least the first Trilogy was made by Jigsaw, see URL below

http://www.jigsaw.tv/blackjack.htm

Hi Progosauras,

Barbara's very kindly beaten me to it. I'm not sure why the BBC has swapped round episodes 2 and 3 (or 1 and 2 of Trilogy 1), but either way, it's a minor irritant that should really have been corrected.

It doesn't make a huge amount of difference, but there are small issues that are affected by watching them in the order the BBC have shown them, e.g. Jack's daughter Liz's disability/health improvements, the relationship between Jack and his daughter, her interest in entering an Australian National gaming competition, etc.

My preferred guide for this (and other) Australian TV shows, is... right here!

Wednesday 30th
First Wave – 8:00-9:00pm
Return of the hit US sci-fi series, after a lengthy absence. Sadly, there is no longer a late-night, same-night repeat. Continuing from where we left off, with Season 2, Episode 7. (ITV4)

no repeats...oh bugger:(

but at least it's back & a very welcome return to the schedule:smashin:

Good to see you back in harness Pooch.

This little lot has probably kept you harnessed all week to your computer, tv guides and internet sources. Thank you for your considerable time and effort to feed the hungry mob with tv offerings we might have missed.

I have put "Ozone" on the planner for tonight and "Black Jack" (really like that series). I am also going to record them on UK Drama in early September, as mentioned by Barbara. If we have rain we sometimes lose the Sky signal as our garden and Sky signal is facing 50 to 60 feet trees. The silver birch ones are the worst as they sway and block the signal if they are wet. This way I am trying to make sure I don't miss these episodes.

I like the sound of "Now and Again", John Goodman usually lends some presence to the story.

Many Thanks Pooch.

Hi Pooch.

NEW: Navy NCIS – 7:25-8:15pm / 8:30-9:25pm
Double-bill to start off all-new (to terrestrial TV fans) Season 2 of this fun crime drama about a team of investigators who deal only with crimes in the US Navy. Any Idea why channel 5 are not showing NCIS in widescreen?. I have recently bought the season 1 dvd box set, and the epiosdes are shot in 16.9 but not shown that way on channel 5.

They probably sourced the masters from FXUK, could be cheaper than buying new 16:9 masters direct from the distributer.

As far as I remember from when I saw it the first time round, John Goodman is the brain that is then put in the other guys head so I dont think hes actually in it very much.

Hi,

As far as I know, Fox tries to hold the Widescreen masters back from TV companies, unless they are willing to stump up a large amount of money to air them. If a company isn't willing to pay the large sum Fox asks for, then the only option is to air the fullscreen versions instead.

It's a cheaky tactic, that Fox are using to try and eek out more money on newer TV shows. The same problem happened with "Angel" and "Buffy", until recently. Only once the complete series of both shows had been released on DVD, were Sky and Five allowed to air widescreen prints. Sorry this isn't the best news. :(

And Cynthia, Battle's right: John Goodman doesn't appear much in the show, but it's an excellent series nonetheless, as Eric Close (who also appears as Agent Martin Fitzgerald in "Without A Trace") plays the semi-bionic superhuman who is given Goodman's character's brain, and becomes a government superspy. The first episode of "Now And Again" will explain it all much better than I can! :)

Pooch

P.S. I will be performing a mini-TV update, which will hopefully go online on Saturday afternoon. :)

A word of warning with now and again though.

because The series was never renewed for a second season ...spoiler........... it ends with a cliff hanger that is never resolved and would have taken the show in a totaly differnt direction. Spoiler end

I was gutted when the show was canned, as I got really into it:(

Another big thumbs up from me for this series. If you have never seen it then its a do not miss experience. Possibly the most unfairly canned one season show in TV history.

The interplay between Eric Close and the chap who then became President Palmer in 24 is superb. The emotion of the relationship between Michael and his wife and daughter (who do not reecognise him but feel a strange affinity towards him). The superb writing and production from Glen Gordon Carron Moonlighting (and now Medium)...It just all hangs together perfectly. Great casting in every role like you rarely see on TV.

John Goodman is in the opening episodes and then only later in the series in two or three flashback episodes. They brought him back at sweeps time trying to boost the audience and save the show. Sadly the US audience just never appreciated this show.

But if you love good TV that works around extremely well drawn characters then its one of the best ever. In that sense it is a bit like the modern Battlestar Galactica - a Sci Fi series that is so character led and emotionally well drawn that the fact that it is science fiction is virtually irrelevant.

BlackJac Ace Point Game ...
[snip]

The second episode, but because the BBC have aired it in the wrong order, it’s ending-up as the third one to be aired.

[snip]

I'm not sure why the BBC has swapped round episodes 2 and 3 (or 1 and 2 of Trilogy 1), but either way, it's a minor irritant that should really have been corrected.

It doesn't make a huge amount of difference, but there are small issues that are affected by watching them in the order the BBC have shown them, e.g. Jack's daughter Liz's disability/health improvements, the relationship between Jack and his daughter, her interest in entering an Australian National gaming competition, etc.

I can't (a) understand exactly which order you prefer, nor (b) agree with you, whatever.

We can quote websites at each other until we go blue - basically different sites tell different stories about the dates. And then there is the debate about production vs air dates.

In my opinion, the BBC order is the only one that is consistent.
(lots of hidden spoilers below)

In The Money has a scene that in effect introduces Sam relationship with Jack - since the original female support has been replaced. => Money is 1st of the trilogy, i.e. is properly ep2 of 4.

Dentistry: In The Money - (BBC ep2) Sam says her her dad is dentist. Sweet Science (BBC ep3) Sam needs a dentist, and Jack demonstrates that he has *forgotten* that he had been told that her dad is a dentist.
And, given what happens to Sam in Science, there is no way Jack could have forgotten it and then needed to be reminded in Money
.
=> Money preceded Science.

The Archives Department:
as a bona fide investigative unit. In The Money - doesnt exist. Sweet Science - comes into existence. Ace Point Game (BBC ep 4) - has had 10 cases; and Jack's erstwhile boss is forced to be slightly more civil.
=> Money before Science before Ace.

The Car:
In Ace Point Game Jack gets a new car. His old one features in Money & Science - why would it if Ace preceded either of them?
=> Ace is the last of that bunch.

Jack's relationship with Christine: Slightly tricky this; there seems to be no real foundation for their chuminess - we have to presume the banter has been going on for a while - then
the kiss in Science appears like a first time thing,
whereas the relaxed behaviour in Ace seems more like a followup
=> Science precedes Ace

As you said, most of that makes no real difference. Except perhaps to understand Jack's relationship with his original boss - and the other detectives, particularly the one in Ace
who is no longer in the police.
And, of course, Jack's relationship with Sam, and why she keep changing her mind about
leaving
.

and one more thing - thanks for the regular heads-up !

Ozone – 3:40-3:55am
Award-winning short film about a man who gets an unexpected surprise, when he takes the lift up to the 200th floor of his futuristic office block. Surreal, but quirky little movie, that’s worth a look/recording. (Channel 4)

watched this after hard driving it & like my wife says you watch some wierd ****

Hi Progosaurus,

I'm happy to agree to disagree with you, on the correct running order of "BlackJack". Unless otherwise stated, I try to go with the most sensible looking, official order - either from the country of origin of the show (e.g. BlackJack), storyline continuity (e.g. American Gothic, Firefly, et al), or order originally shown in the majority of countries who have aired the show (e.g. The Prisoner, Thunderbirds, et al).

Like you and I say, ultimately it makes only a little difference, but each to their own. Either way, I'm  !

However, I'm glad you appreciated the reminder. I'll do my best to see if the BBC have bought the rights to the next BJ Trilogy series, as well. :)

(Channel 4)

Monday 4th
Star Trek TV Series and Movies Week – 11:00am-6am
For the next five days, almost every hour of the day will feature either episodes from the original, digitally-remastered “Star Trek” TV series (Seasons 1 and 2 only), and/or one of the Star Trek movies, starring the original Classic Trek crew. Check your usual TV listings guide for full details. This will either be absolute heaven, or absolute hell for Sci-Fi Channel viewers! Continues all week! (Sci-Fi Channel)

Third Watch – 12:30-1:30pm
Nope, it's not new episodes :( , rather a repeat of suitable episodes from Season 4, starting with “Light's Up”. Fans of the show will know, that many Season 4 episodes were cut or simply not shown at all, due to their adult content. As the show is being aired each weekday, in a lunchtime slots, don't expect much of Season 4 to escape unscathed. Hopefully, before the end of this year, we'll finally get to see all-new, uncut episodes of the final series, Season 6. Then again, maybe not. Each day's episode will be shown at approximately the same time, but please check your usual TV listings guide for the specific times. Thanks. (Channel 4)

Again, another chance to see all of Seasons 1 and 2, back-to-back. Episodes air each weekday evening, at the same time. (Five)

FILM: La Belle Et La Bete (Beauty And The Beast) (PG) – 1:10-3:00am
Jean Cocteau's superb film version of the classic fairytale story, about a gypsy woman who falls in love with a manly-like creature. It may be in Black and White, and in French with English Subtitles, but it's still a great movie for fantasy, horror or romance fans. Showing uncut. (Film4)

Tuesday 5th
Don't Get Me Started: What's Wrong With Blaspheny? – 7:15-8:00pm
Intriguing and controversial one-off documentary by comedian and screenwriter Stewart Lee (of “Lee & Herring” fame). As one half of the pair behind the controversial theatre production “Jerry Springer: The Musical”, Lee looks at what role blasphemy plays in modern-day media, and the rights or wrongs surrounding blasphemy. (Five)

House: Double-Bill – 9:00-11:00pm
Viewers following this medical drama on Hallmark, finally get to see the last two episodes from Season 2 (shown earlier in the year on Five). An excellent end to the series, and Season 3 will air on Five early next-year, followed by a run on Hallmark from June 2007. (Hallmark)

FILM: Hearts And Minds (15) – 10:00pm-12:20am
A rare chance to see this thought-provoking film documentary from 1974, examining the Vietnam War, with interviews with the people involved, both in the USA, and in Vietnam itself. Contains strong language, harrowing scenes, and distressing material. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. Also repeated later on tonight, between 1:50-4:10am. (More4)

NEW: Evidence – 10:00-11:00pm
All new crime drama, fresh from its original run in the USA. Martin Landau and Rob Estes star as two detectives trying to solve crimes, whilst they struggle with their own personal demons and issues. This is the first of the ten episodes that make up the entire First Season. Repeated at 3:00am tonight, as well. (FX)

FILM: Three Colours: Blue (15) – 10:00-11:40pm
Superb, stellar drama about love and loss, in part one of Krzysztof Kieslowski's jaw-dropping movie trilogy! If you love film, then you absolutely have to see this movie! One of the finest films ever made… period! Contains some swearing and a brief sex scene. In French, with English Subtitles. Best-watched in order, and over three consecutive days, if possible, to get the most rewards out of the complete series. Very clever work, with some superb but subtle jokes, between all three films. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. “Three Colours: White” airs on Friday night at 10pm, whilst “Three Colours: Red” will follow later in the month. (Artsworld)

FILM: To Catch A Killer (15) – 10:30pm-2:30am
Late-night repeat of both parts of this two-part US TV movie, that – although quite dated – still stands head and shoulders above many others. Brian Dennehy stars as the serial killer John Wayne Gacy, in this lengthy and creepy drama. Some bad language, and some material that may be considered unsuitable for teenagers. Showing uncut. Each part runs for 2 hours (or 90-minutes without all the adverts)! (True Movies)

FILM: Bloody Birthday (18) – 12:50-2:45am
Another previously-banned Video Nasty turns-up on UK TV, uncut and uncensored. This one, from 1981, is a gore-classic, set around the everyday event of a young teenager's birthday. However, it won't only be the candles on the cake, that get snuffed out, at this particular party! It's silly, nonsensical, and badly acted, but it revels in the nasty and sleazy side of horror, that more-or-less makes up for the lack of plot, providing such material doesn't upset you! Contains gore, violence and sexually violent material, that some viewers may find offensive. Showing uncut. (Zone Horror – the new name of The Horror Channel)

Wednesday 6th
Doctor Who – 7:30-9:00pm
A complete rerun of Series One, starting with Episodes 1 and 2 of the 2005 reincarnation of the sci-fi TV series, starring Christopher Ecclestone and Billie Piper. Episodes continue each weeknight. (BBC3)

FILM DOUBLE-BILL: The Fast And The Furious (15) / 2 Fast, 2 Furious (12) – 9:00pm-1:40am
Fancy spending the evening with fast cars and fast people? Here's your chance with the action/thriller movie series. Vin Diesel stars. The original is the best one, but if you like high-octane action, then these movies will do it for you. Contains straong language and some scenes of a mildly provocative nature. Both films showing uncut and in Widescreen. (ITV2)

Thursday 7th
9/11: The Twin Towers – 9:00-10:00pm AND 10:35-11:20pm
Two-part documentary dramatisation about the September 11th tragedy. Although the event occurred nearly five years ago now, I'm not sure how dramatising an event like this, is really appropriate! Terence Stamp narrates. Contains distressing material, that some viewers may find offensive. Showing in Widescreen. (BBC1)

FILM: The League Of Gentlemen: Apocalypse! (15) – 9:00-10:40pm
The cinema sin-off from the hit TV series of the same name, set amongst the dark and freaky inhabitants of Northern town Royston Vasey. If you've seen and liked the show, then you'll probably enjoy the movie. For everyone else, it's unlikely to make the slightest bit of sense. Contains strong language, and some mature and dark material. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. (Film4)

Time Trumpet = 10:00-10:30pm
Hit-and-miss comedy sketch show, but tonight's episode is almost certain to cause controversy and outrage viewers! This edition looks at how the BNP became a nicer, more pleasant political party, whilst the 2012 Olympics in London became an unforgettably tragic event! Contains strong language and adult material. (BBC2)

NEW: Criminal Minds – 10:00-11:00pm
Another great US import, comes to Five, (having previously aired a few months back on LivingTV), and this one deals with the FBI's Behavioural Analysis Unit (BAU) based in Quantico, Virginia. Mandy Patinkin stars as the team's moral compass and leader, Agent Jason Gideon, as he preps his squad to deal with various crimes, that look into a criminal's behavioural pattern. At times, this series has been excellent, but there have also been a few very hit-and-miss episodes, during the middle of the series. However, the great episodes more than make up for those. One thing: the show frequently uses the term “Unsub”. Although it was explained, I kept forgetting what it meant. It's actually shorthand for “Unknown Subject”, or – to you and I – the killer or target that is being hunted. A good, gritty series. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. (Five)

NEW: Reno 911! – 10:00-11:00pm
Season 2 of the anarchic comedy show, that takes the mickey out of various US and UK-based police reality TV shows. It's offbeat, surreal, and an acquired taste, but most of the humour works. Two episodes will air each week. Episodes 1 and 2 air tonight. (FX)

NEW: Japanorama – 11:00-11:30pm
Jonathan Ross returns with a new, six-part series looking at Japanese society, culture and media, especially with Manga and Anime. Each episode looks at a different subject. Tonight, he investigates “Kakkoli” or Japanese Cool! It's bizarre, but fascinating stuff. Bearing in mind the late-timeslot, the series may well contain some adult material, some strong language, and/or some violent or sexual material. Showing in Widescreen. (BBC3)

FILM: Azumi (18) – 12:35-3:00am
UK premiere of the hit, cult Japanese live-action movie, based on the Manga comic-book character/series of the same name. A teenage girl is one of several youngsters who are taught to fight as deadly assassins. The film is very bloody, but if you enjoy martial arts or action movies with an oriental touch, this should be a hit for you! Contains bloody violence, some very strong language, and violent scenes. In Japanese with English Subtitles. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. (Film4)

Friday 8th
FILM: Three Colours: White – 10:00-11:30pm
The middle-part in the acclaimed and justly-deserved award-winning trilogy, with Julie Delpy. Not the best of the three movies, but the one that sparks the most questions from audiences, especially with the audacious and cryptic ending! Contains some strong language, and some nudity. In French and Polish, with English Subtitles. Showing uncut and in Widescreen. (Artsworld)

FILM: A Clockwork Orange (18) – 11:10pm-1:45am
One of a very few Stanley Kubrick films to be made in Widescreen! It's the adults only, controversial and very dark story about a young hooligan, who is given one last chance to mend his ways, by undergoing a new form of treatment, to rid him of his evil thoughts and methods. Full of raw power, shocking violence, and one of the greatest movie soundtracks ever, this is a must-see film! A potent tale for both the pro-censorship and anti-censorship crowd! Intelligent, witty, sophisticated, dark, clever, mind-bogglingly freaky, and ultimately disturbing. Quite possibly Kubrick's finest film! Showing uncut and in Widescreen. Contains scenes of violence, nudity and adult material, that many viewers will find disturbing. (Film4)

Well, that's the end of my short :D update! It wasn't meant to be this long, but you know me… why list just five films and programmes, when I can list twenty-five?! :rotfl:

I'll be back soon, with another update, although I don't know when that's going to be. It might be next week, or the week after. Either way, I will be back, with more new shows, and great films come to your TV screens, as we head into the full-swing of the Autumnal TV schedules! And I can assure you all, there's some excellent treats in-store, both new and old, for everyone! I will leave you with one little clue: a BBC teatime classic, is due to be repeated for the first time, in-full, having not been seen since its original transmission, back in the early 1980's! ;) Until next time, when I will reveal all…

… Goodbye!!!! :)

The Evidence - looks as if FX are showing only the first 8 before starting repeats!!!

Afterlife - ITV3 have finally decided to show the season 1 repeats from Sunday 10th to Friday 15th September inclusive. Fits in with a rumour that season 2 starts on 19th September?

The Tripods? that would be

I think there were only 8 episodes of the original 13 ordered that were actually produced before it got the choppy.
