Just getting into photography beyond the usual point n' click camera's. Bought myself a Nikon D40 with the 18-55mm kit lens. Looking to purchase a 55-200mm before I go to New York next month. Anyway, thought I'd post these as I thought they were not too bad but me not being an expert, would appreciate some tips, pointers, etc.

    I think these are great.

I too am a D40 user and love it.

I would strongly recommend getting the 70-300mm VR lens. Absolutely great (see my flickr site for photos taken with this lens)

Thanks :D And before anybody asks, I haven't done anything with these other than resize them, don't even know how to use Photoshop

My spare cash has been swallowed up by the trip to NY and my holiday later in the year so I was going to go for something that would give me a bit more flexibility without breaking the bank.

Initially bought the camera to get decent pics in NY and the Caribbean but I'm getting hooked. I find myself driving to work in the morning looking for things to photograph :suicide:

Why not buy the lense in NY and potentially save even for a step up the lense ladder :)

That you may have to learn.. someday soon:) : You might need it to unlock the potential in those nice Images

    Sounds familiar:D
I prefer the framing of the second picture and both are a bit underexposed (Photoshop ect .. again:cool:)
There are technical and creative aspects to capturing images these will come with time: You've taking the first step.. got the camera and are using it:smashin:
    Well done

I've had a look on eBay US to get an idea of prices and the Nikon AF-S 55-200m lens is approx £86 but by the time you add postage and duty/VAT on, it works out about the same as buying it in the UK.

Do you know of any shops in NY I can visit? Any websites?

    Thanks.

Plus, I just heard on the news that the pound has just edged over the $2 mark, so there should definately be some bargains to had.

Sods law, I'd leave it with the intention of buying the lens over there and they would have none in stock :(

Do I pay the £108 here locally or do I leave it for now and pay approx £80-£90 in the US?

    Dilemma
