Hello, this is my first posting in this forum.

My girlfriend has said she would like us to get a nice hi-fi for the living room. I'm looking for a pair of bookshelf speakers for under £300, what would you reccommend?

    Many thanks

You could do a lot worse than the Monitor Audio Silver S1 - currently being sold off cheap as they are being phased out. They were £300, but I've seen them for less than £200, add a pair of Atacama Nexus stands for about £60 and you've got a very nice pair of speakers. They do need a bit of room behind them (12-18"), so strictly speaking they should not go on a bookshelf.

I auditioned them against Kef Q1, B&W 602S3 and one or two others, and for me they were by far the best. Excellent bass for a small cabinet. Try and get to hear before you buy tho'.

Do they seem better than the Q1?

There are some improvements/mods to the drivers and crossover and a new cabinet design amongst others. They also won the EISA award for 'best loudspeaker'.

I WISH I could tell you, they have yet to come out here  . I am obviously biased but I am very happy with my Q1s (used them as mains b4 the Q7 arrived). Initial reports say they(iQ range) have a better bass response so that to me would mean they sound 'better' but will have to wait and hear I suppose

I must admit I heard the Q5 and Q1 in such conditions I must forget...

P.M.: Not the speakers, but the sellers fault...! I want to hear them again!

But I love their looks and wouldn't mind having Q1+Qcompact rears or iQ3+iQ1 (I prefer bookshelf speakers)
