I have recently purchased a universal DVD player.

Bee n browsing at SACD and DVD-A discs out of curiosity.

I was wondering it it is worth while starting a similar thread to the one already going titled "Recomended Albums", a 'sticky thread', but purely for SACD/DVD-A music.. either recomending the good or the ones to avoid?!?!?!?

Edited I wonder if the HCC magazines would start to review musical DVD's either DVD-video music, DVD-A or SACD? Just a thought

    Yours curiously

Perhaps you could suggest to a moderator that it be made into a Sticky?

Might be worth a try :).

Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon

Groove Armada - Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub)

Both of these discs have been excellently re-mastered to make full use of the surround sound.

Some discs have not had so much care taken over them. A little reverb in the rear speakers does not make a multi-channel recording !!

Police Every Breath You Take best of SACD. Walking on the Moon in surround is excellent!

    DSOTM

Roxy Music Avalon is also good.

Want the Foo Fighters on DVD-A. Any one seen it at a good price ?

JohnG, I dont think there is region coding on DVD-A. However I have a multiregion 2900 so maybe I wouldnt know. However the original DVD V region coding was the studios trying to control the introduction of DVDs internationally so it didnt affect Cinema releases. I dont suppose this is an issue for DVD-A.

As for places to buy. I have used
    Play
    Tower.com
    Amazon.com
    and some stores in NYC.

However UK based stores are not taking this seriously at all. Any I have found are at a daft price, apart from DSOTM SACD in Tesco for £9.99:D

    Rog

p.s Futreent to DVD-A. What we want is CD-Wow to do DVD-A and SACD.

I think that all the dvd-a releases so far are region free.
Mind you, the video on most (if not all) of them is in ntsc.

I've been eagerly awaiting the Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots on DVD-Audio. The release has been delayed a couple of times but should be out 12th Jan. A few sites have reviewed the US release and it sounds very good. Lets hope the surround steering is indeed 'good' rather than gimicky.

I've just purchased the Denon 2900 and have been scouring the net for reviews, retailers and price comparisons

So far I haven't found a good price comparison site - the usual DVD sites for DVD-Audio and some of the CD comparison sites like www.amusicarea.com for SACD but they're hardly comprehensive

Reviews are also difficult but some of the better sites are:

    www.audaud.com
    www.musictap.net
    www.dvdangle.com

    Plus user reviews at Amazon

As for retailers my favourite DVD retailers DVDSoon and DVDPacific both stock DVD-Audio but the DVDSoon range is limited. DVDPacific also have an extensive SACD catalogue (DVD-A and SACD are under the AUDIO tab on the website). Pricing at DVDPacific is usually US$14.17 for most titles which, coupled with the cheap shipping, probably makes them the best bet - certainly for deliveries to Oz

As for discs the Bjork Vespertine DVD-A is stunning as is the DSOTM SACD. I'm somewhat underwhelmed by the R.E.M. Document and Neil Young Road Rocks Vol 1 DVD-As

Please keep this thread going as it's extremely difficult finding info on these formats and all feedback would be welcome

    Cheers

    Martin

Red Trumpet is a good site for DVD-A/SACD in america, they're doing the 15 disc Bob Dylan boxed set for £107 (at the current exchange rate anywhoo) and the Stones 16 disker for £208. If Rachael sticks her head in, she's a good authority on SACD and will probably drop in a few links.

For you that prefer your rock somewhat heavier, you could try
Ministry - Animositisomina (24 bit 96Khz DVD-A, 24bit 48Khz DD 5.1). They also have a live album in this format.
    Biohazard - Uncivilization (24 bit 96Khz DVD-A, 24bit 48Khz DD 5.1);
    Dimmu Borgir - Death Cult Armageddon (DVD-A 48Kh/24bit 2.0, 5.1, DD5.1 & DTS 5.1);
    Deep Purple - Machine Head SACD (with the Quadrophonic mix for the multichannel SACD);
I haven't bothered with the Motorhead 'Best of.."

    I also have Steve Stevens Flamenco.A.Go.Go (DTS 5.1, DD2.0)

Eagles - Hell Freezes Over (R4, DTS 5.1, DD2.0), though the bonus DTS track (Seven Bridges Road) doesn't want to play on my Pioneer DV-656A for some reason.

Once I pay my Christmas bills I'm going to pick up Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Rage Hard SACD.

Just read on the www.whatvideotv.com new section the following:-

"The Who's Live At The Royal Albert Hall launching on SACD triple pack
Steamhammer Records has announced that The Who's Live at the Royal Albert Hall is going to be released on the Super Audio CD (SACD) format onTuesday. What’s more, it will be a three-CD set featuring the soundtrack of the 2001 DVD with two tracks not included on the DVD. The third CD is a bonus disc containing four tracks recorded live early in 2002, also at the Royal Albert Hall (and the last time bass guitarist/vocalist John Entwistle's performed with The Who).

The best news for SACD fans is that the release has been mastered in SACD’s hybrid format to provide a 5.1 surround sound mix AND a standard stereo CD mix all on one disc."

    Hi all...

Thank you for your replies and suggestions:

I currently have Queen, "The Game" on DVD-A

ON SACD so far, I have

    Stings recent hybrid,
Pink Floyd, "Dark Side of the Moon"
Peter Gabriel " Shaking the Tree, Greatest hits"
    The Police: "greatest Hits"

When i get chance, I shall review them, but certainly The police CD is superbly mixed, with an air of treble and spatial full ness not experienced on the CD.

Pink Floyd id also highly commendable.....

    More to come soon, hopefully.

I would love to know what is going on in the heads of the record company executives who are scraping their 70's and 80's back catalogues instead of releasing brand new mainstream albums in these formats.

    I use

    http://www.movietyme.com/ and
    http://www.futureent.com/

On top of all those mentioned so far I highly recommend Metallica's the black album as something to blow the windows out. Quite stunning. I got it from Movietyme for hardly anything.

My favourites are Dark Side of the Moon and The Game. Lets hope Wish You Were here and some more Queen albums are in the pipeline.

Hmm, that's really tempting (but can I justify it ?)

Anyone know how these Dylan remasters sound ?

I picked up Blood on the Tracks yesterday and gave it a quick listen - first impressions are that this disc is very much front focussed with delicate use of the surrounds - which probably suits this type of music? I have no CDs to compare with but instrumentation is well defined.

I've got 3 more on order fron DVDpacific so I'll post again when they arrive

    Cheers

Yes, the black album is better than the CD by miles. Also has some amusing video footage on of Hetfield witha a shotgun saying "I told you not to £*&% around". Well funny.

The Tower records site has the Stones SACD's for US$9 each. Shipping is US$10 for 1-3 items and US$15 for 4-6 so if you bought three that would be <AUS$18 (<8GBP, I think?) landed which puts them on par with CD prices here in Australia - not sure about the UK?

These SACDs are stereo only, although there is a 5.1 single of Sympathy for the Devil, so the only thing from stopping me is the potential for 5.1 mixes of these albums in the near future

    Cheers

    So far I have:
    SACD:
    DSOTM – Very good indeed

    DVD-A
Metallica Black album – excellent; almost sounds like a different drum sound has been used compared with the CD.
Bruce Dickinson – Balls To Picasso; Good surround mix that really brings out some of the different percussion sounds used
Stained – 14 Shades Of Grey – Enjoyed this, but don’t have the CD to compare (This is the first time I’ve skipped a CD purchase because I knew a DVD-A was coming out.)
Megadeth – Peace Sells…; I didn’t enjoy the surround mix at all. Will try again with the stereo mix. Still prefer the vinyl at the moment though!

Hmm, only 5 titles & I have everything I want out of what’s released so far.
Looking forward to see what Iron Maiden – Dance Of Death DVD-A turns out like if it ever gets released
