I've just ordered sony Dav 500 as i also didn't like the wood effect.

what Hi-Fi gave it 5 stars over the denon which is good enough for me as the denon is a cracking piece of kit.
I went to electrosaver and got it for £389 :)

Try Sony DAV-DZ700FW. Same as 500 but with wireless rear speakers.

Amazing price at Pixmania - £359 including delivery.

Not quite the same, the 500 lacks digital audio inputs, the 700 has 2........ this is a big difference in my opinion as its the only way to hook up your sky & ps2 to experience Dolby Digital

beware of the guarantee with pixmania, the sony unit would have to go back to France at your expense for any warranty repairs - sony uk will not touch it.

No, Dolby Digital is on quite a few Sky channels, and it doesnt matter whether you have nomal sky or sky+, you still get it, but you must have a digital input on your 5.1 system to use it

Darren, please be aware that if the item develops a fault the item can be dropped into the Pixmania shop in Fulham, London and they will send it back for repair at their expense. (Obviously not very useful though if you live up North)

I wasn't aware of that as I thought that it was Sky Plus only. Don't forget that you can only output DD from a Sky Box that has a digital output and my old Pace box certainly is analogue only.

Would you need to purchase cables on top of this ?

I'm presuming there already come with them? If so Is it worth getting better ones and what type, make?

    thanks

Just gotta get this straight.Your saying that the only way to get dolby digital from sky is by having normal sky or sky+ and having a digital input on the DAV-700 as opposed to the 500.

Anybody know what channels sky broadcast in DD anyway.I thought it was just the movies now and again?

    Cheers
    Chris

Chris, you cannot get 5.1 digital sound without the Digital input which is only on the Sony 700.
Not aware exactly of what programmes are currently broadcast from Sky in 5.1 (mainly films I believe) but when Sky start broadcasting in HD next year they will definately be broadcasting their sports channels and sky one in it to start with.
This is why I have ordered the 700 model, got it from Pixmania £359.00 incl delivery & delivered within 4 days of ordering it.

Tannoy EFX5.1 will walk all over the speakers from Denon & Sony.

All you will need is a Receiver and DVD. Will be a two box system, but will give you so much more scope

Sorry, that is not correct, Sony Product are covered by the Sony Pan-European Guarantee so you can return them to Sony UK (or any European Sony repair centre) and they will repair it.
