so either Disney are going to give the Skywalker Story a rest after Episode 9 or Rian is going to do a trilogy of anthology films to alternate the main films.

A trilogy is a big gig so excited what he’s going to do

Wow Lucasfilm must be super impressed with what he’s done with last Jedi then.

Very interesting news, I have said in the past that it's a big galaxy so good news it will be explored. And indeed, Lucasfilm must be happy with The Last Jedi and his work.

      I bet.

A complete break from the Star Wars story so to speak. Was kinda hoping we got this in the first place, but we got plan stealing and Solo instead. Meh.

But now Disney have made their money back, it appears to have given them some man globes. If a few money-in-the-bank movies is what it's taken to get there, then so be it.

Sorry @Ed Selley the next podcast may not be to your taste.

I guess there's a lot of life left is the SW universe yet then. I don't think any other series has spawned this many different stories from one original movie. I guess they have to do this to try and keep the movies fresh, or else there's a risk SW rot could creep in.

Another trilogy was always going to happen with the returns that Disney are getting on their SW output so far. I'm surprised that it's already announced though, baring in mind we still have the next two parts of the current 'sequel' trilogy yet to grace cinemas (not to mention Solo). And I certainly didn't expect to be set away from the Skywalker saga, although I can see why the studio wants to bring something new to the table.
Kind of excited about it, but it could be quite a few years away yet, so we'll see...

And I wonder where this news leaves the 'Star Wars Story' spin offs? Based on the great reception Rogue One got, and assuming that Solo does the business, I would assume that Disney will continue to plunder key characters backstories...

TV Spin off. "Tatooine's got talent!" Game show featuring hopeful bands from across the galaxy vying for position as the new house band at the illustrious court of Jabba the Hut. Losers get a cackle from Sly Snootles followed by a gong from a pair of chuckling Gamorran guards before a drop to meet a certain cellar dweller. :)

I think they also mentioned a live action TV series would be getting made.

I'm conflicted over this, It's good that we are getting more Star Wars movies and I am extremely excited for The Last Jedi, however I am worried that it will be over saturated and too much of a good thing could diminish the quality of the franchise if they keep continually chucking out Star Wars movies/TV shows.

It sounds like a lot to swallow but don't forget we've had two star wars series (3 including the 2d animation) and a film every year since 2015. So far, the quality hasn't suffered.

It also doesn't seem to be hurting Marvel, now up to 3 films a year plus god knows how many Netflix series. As long as they continue to mix up the talent and hire the right people, I'm confident the mouse house knows what its doing.

Yep, I'm up for it. What it means is more movies I can take my sons to and *sniff* eventually they won't want to go with me but I guess this new trilogy will be 2020-2025 ish, so they can go with me.

I agree Marvel quality is not really dipping but starting to feel that Marvel will need to freshen up soon; next year I imagine.

The thing with Marvel though is the MCU has only been around for 9 years. All building up to next years Infinity War and the concluding film to close that chapter.

It will be interesting to see how Marvel do post Infinity War movies. People are starting to complain about Marvel fatigue and with something as amazing as Star Wars it is a shame that we could get to a stage where that could be a possibility. Star Wars has been around a lot longer than the MCU, 40 years in fact so has a lot more behind it already.

For me less is more, I much prefer it when for arguments sake they had Mrs. Doubtfire, no matter how many times they asked Robin to revisit and make a sequel he said no. Even towards the end of his life when it was well documented money was tight and his own life as he knew it was dwindling he was still putting it off because he cared about the character/film too much.

Not saything there should be no more Star Wars but for me personally Rogue One was not needed, not going to comment on the Han Solo movie yet but that's another that a lot of people aren't that excited for. I wouldn't mind a new trilogy where they visit new areas of the galaxy as it has so much potential. I just hope there isn't a long running TV series, the Spin off movies, current Modern Trilogy (7, 8, 9) and then obviously this new trilogy released say every 6 months whilst say the TV series is running alongside, it will be so overexposed.

Having said that as I previously said I am torn, it's great there are expanding and we get all these movies but I just hope it doesn't damage the franchise long term.

I agree if the stories are rubbish, however Rogue one showed that if the stories are good then the Star wars universe is a great place to tell them.
My hope is that the new trilogy is a very different type of story just set in the same universe.

I’m just glad that Epsiode 9 could be the end of the Skywalker story completely. There are an unlimited amount of other stories and characters they can use.

The only bit that may be tough is the Jedi and siths legacies as they are tied to the characters of the main films

I'd love to see a new Star Wars saga set thousands of years before the Skywalker saga. It could show the origins of the Jedi and Sith. The Jedi of the new trilogy could be as different to the Jedi of the OT and PT as medieval priests are to a modern day vicar. No need to cover familiar stories.

      With
      Han dead,
Carrie Fisher passed, and only Mark Hamill still around in the series (as far as we know), I think you could be right. I don't think they'll use CGI to resurrect them for a full movie in the (near) future, but who knows.

just laughs @ and so far the quality hasnt suffered

It could easily be argued that its done nothing other than suffering since Empire /Jedi (I still prefer Jedi to Empire inspite of the Ewoks)

Ep 1 - 111 where an absolute joke and The force Awakens was a complete rip off of the original film. Rogue One was a ten minute story stretched out to two hours (and to be fair hardly needed telling in the 1st place)

Im happy that Disney have announced this, but it needed to be left 5+ years after Ep IX / Solo (if there is to be a live action tv series allow that to fill in the time between the films)

Its going to be FAR too saturated by the time Solo has been released - Disney are killing off a great universe slowly but surely by doing things far too quickly.

Im looking forward to TLJ (and hopefully IX) but all this other stuff needs to spread out FAR more

While I think it will take a while for people adjust, I think completely moving away from the Skywalker legacy is the best thing for the franchise. There's are still the secondary characters that can see still crop up if needed.

More Star Wars is always appreciated. I don't know about everyone else, but I would LOVE it if they made movies entirely with CGI. I'm talking about the exact style of the pre-rendered cinematics from the video game "Star Wars The Old Republic" (the mmo). Those are really fantastic. If you haven't seen them, look for them on Youtube and then imagine an entire movie, or maybe a TV series, with high production value.

This news bodes well for his work on Last Jedi , are we in for a Empire Strikes Back moment in the Star Wars universe ? Anyway it for me is a good move to take the universe in a whole new direction with fresh new characters separate from and not tied to the saga.

well we know Disney are going to milk this for eternity and for a film series that the 2nd one was the best out of the 8 so far (inc R1) that's stretching things to the limit

just like The Alien Saga with more reboots and prequels just destroying the legacy this is going to end up like EastEnders in Space......let it go ...which of course they wont......

      I agree with you 100%.

Unfortunately I'll still be going to the cinema to watch them, or buying the BDs to watch at home in the (new) hope that they're going to capture the magic that was Empire or Star Wars.

I'm sure there must be a medical term for that...
