For those of you who may be thinking "God, he's upgrading AGAIN?"....well I'm not, but for various reasons my M&K MPs-1610s will be heading back to Eric shortly.

So I will have a front soundstage that consists of 3 speaker stands and 2 Servo 15s:eek: :(

The big question is, where do I turn for speakers now? Before anyone mentions it, I don't want to go down the route of actives.

    Why?

Well I've spent months upgrading, buying and selling, and (for a while) I've had enough! My power amps were bought brand new and I couldn't justify selling them now and losing a packet just because I'm going down the active route.

So I'm sticking to passives, and ideally standmounts if possible.

    So what are the options?

I've got the following in mind (possibly):

M&K S85s. I'd be looking at 2nd hand, how would they compare to my 1610s?

M&K 1510s. Probably sound identical to my 1610s, except they don't come up for sale 2nd hand often....:(

What other options should I be looking at? Once I get my refund I'll be looking at £1275 to play with.

    Options?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Cheers
    Matt

btw I know someone will ask me, the reason why my speakers are going back is nothing to do with Eric himself. To clarify, Eric's supplier hasn't been able to supply me with a replacement speaker for my damaged 1610 (it arrived with the tweeter crushed). As it's been going on for almost 2 months now (or close to that) Eric is giving me a full refund.

They're £400 each? Is that the full price? Or a discounted one?

Anyone know how they compare to the 1510s (as hardly any people have heard my 1610s!)

    Cheers
    Matt

I don't think that there is a great deal of difference between the S85 and 1510 but if you liked the sound that your 1610s made you will have to be looking at some of the "studio monitor" type speakers.

If it were me I would do something completely different and would ask Dubbing Mixer to ask his mates at Leema for a quote for three Leema Xen speakers. These are brilliant little speakers but the downside is that if you weren't happy you may have difficulty in selling them on as Leema is hardly a household name.

LOL who the hell is Dubbing Mixer?

I know you've mentioned Leema Xen speakers before, but I've never seen them or know anything of them...and certainly haven't heard them:(

Where can you get a demo? What kind of price are we looking at?

    Thanks
    Matt

As I told you in my email, the 850's are a brand new design which replace the S85's, are stand mounted and have mightly impressed me the numerous times I have listened to them. They are new, the x-over is new as are the tweeters, so it is M&K's latest speaker and I know one person that was so impressed he got rid of his s150's.

Can anyone confirm the price of the 850s please? I remember seeing them in a local sevenoaks a few months ago and seemed to remember them being in a maple-type finish? And that they looked big for standmounts? (I really want black speakers for my AV room!)

    Thanks for the responses

    Matt

No-not black but some of the finishes are brilliant, I am tempted with the grey blue finish with black covers, look sweet.

I think the 850's are about £435 ish each.

Phil, the website says maple or cherry only?

Do you mean the 851 designer series? Are they the same except for the finishes?

    Cheers

The ones Craig demoed to me a few times are a different finish to maple and cherry, could be that the 851 just has different finishes.
I'm sure Craig might be able to advise further, he's on holiday this week so might not be around.

In the uk the 850's I think are 500 pounds each unless they have dropped the price recently. Gonzo got a pretty good deal by the sounds of it.

The 851's are identical to the 850's but they are finished in more contemporary colours - to me the metallic silver finish didnt look good at all.

Phil - were they a significant improvement over your 750's - are you going to upgrade.

The 850's have the same tweeters as some of the pro series so if Matt you didnt like the sound of your 1610's at higher frequencies -i recall some posts from you around treble problems, similar to mine- you probably wont like the the 850's either. If you want a demo your more than welcome to come round to Watford.

Thanks mate, you could bring em over when you come over to hear the Servos ;)

Re: the treble problems you mention. To a degree I've got used to the M&K sound (love the detail), and I've also carpeted my entire room below ear level, which has really helped:)

    Rags,
Yes I have given them some serious thought, I am also looking at the active route and will be better clued up after the Event as most rooms will have actives.

Matt - perhaps you could keep an eye on the second hand arena & hope an obscure old pair of 775e's come up :D

It's a shame to hear you didn't get that tweeter sorted out - I suppose the longer you're speakerless the less reviews you need to write ;)

Good look with finding some descent replacements

Well by the end of next week I should have the following speakers:

    5 x M&K S85's for LCR, and rear L+R surrounds, and a pair of M&K THX SS150 tripoles for side L+R duties:)

Hopefully I'll notice the difference with a totally balanced soundstage (in terms of the make of speakers)....I just hope I hear a difference in terms of quality over my old missions (77ds bipoles on sides and 8 year old mission 732s on rear duties).

I also hope that I don't notice too big a difference between my M&K 1610s and the S85s.

    Fingers crossed...

    Hi Matt
I changed from mission m7ds to the m&k k-4 tripoles the differance is a much better spread of sound alot less directional you wont be dissapointed.
    Cheers Gonzo.
