    Eughh.
Not sure I like the look of these. Also looks like it might be bigger than their rectangular cousins judging from the last photo. Maybe it looks better in the flesh.

Certainly novel, maybe more ergonomic, but first impressions - Ugly. Ugly, like only a mother could love!

    HD3 looks like a dictaphone.
    HD5 Looks like a Gameboy.
The Bean looks like a cigarette lighter.

Don't see the point of this.....do Sony spend money for the sake of it?

I mean it doesn't offer anything over the 2 'recent' flash lines

I for one certainly wouldn't want a bean shaped player. Did marketing actually do any research for this player to ascertain opinion?

That USB thing is all well and good, but it is a bit awkward if your USB slot is in a funny position, like mine is...

My USB slots at the front are down low, and has a flap about 5mm below. The funny shape of these "Beans" would mean i'd have to possibly have to have some sort of extention cable anyway, so defeats the object really.

Only way I can see this useful is if it were used on a laptop.

And they aren't the smallest of players either. They look very chunky to me!

The success of iPod took off primarily due to its differentiation via the only permanantly visible element of the DAP system, the white leads and earphones.

It is amazing that such a glaring point was not copied immediately as this is very easy technically, after all, only recently i see whitish leads of Creative or so on the trains. People "wear" iPods, not "listen" to it, so why not have earphnones in all the possible colours to attract such guys?

In case of Sony's Bean, are the leads/earphones really match every color? If yes, i bet anyone that this will be the first real iPod slayer.

As usual, i will state i am not anti-iPod, except being tired of the cult of iPods (see my thread "iPod Fatigue").

Yeah, those are definitely aimed at kids - the description on the site is condescending!

I don't really like the look of those at all.

I guess it all depends on how it feels. If it feels like a nasty hard piece of plastic it's going to totally destory the 'bean' idea. I'd like to hold one of these and see how it really is.

If I say I like the Bean, does this make me:

    a) Sony biased?
    b) A child?
    c) Appear to have utterly appalling taste?

NB: I'm prepared to concede it might be a combination of b) and c) ...

"Taste" is an elitists' way of saying "to hell with your opinion".

I'm afraid I find the bean hidous. Thing is I find most Sony players unattractive at first, after which they tend to grow on me - including the HD5. The Vaio Pocket was one of a few that attracted me aesthectically as it was so different...

I remember looking at the HD1 in a shop back when it was released and being mesmerised by its size, but still not being bowled over totally. I prefer funky or unusual designs. It is one area where the iPod wins. I love slating the thing, but I also remember loving the design - until I found out about the crappy battery, lack of gapless etc. etc. etc. Oh and for the record, all this denial and confusion was way back in 2001... (and trust me it was more traumatic than coming to terms with than being a poof...)

Sony players just don't make my jaw drop at first. It's not like looking at B & O or something...

And yeah, the bean seems bigger than it's predecessors. :)

Off topic, but I found the iPod's sound quality a lot more traumatic than realizing I wasn't a hettie either :D (although it was never actually a problem for me).

:) :) You just made me smile, Lyris! :) it wasn't a problem for me either, to be honest. But it just goes to show just how big a problem it was getting to grips with the iPod though!

My housemate has seen this, and wants one.

She's also a bright girl, good education, she's in her early 20's and thinks the pop out USB thing is a great idea. I think she also thinks it looks cool.

So there you go, Sony does have an audience!

I was amazed by the HD5 (I saw the black one first) and was amazed when I was told my £200 would get me a 20gb mp3 player with 30 hour battery life. I held it, I loved it.

And I'm really not a Sony lover overall, apart from their TVs, which I still think are the best kind you can buy.

I actually think Philips TVs are best. Some say Sony TVs are fragile

But certainly Sony have took their foot off the pedal in the last couple of years, what now they are losing money in the consmer electronics dept.

I mean posting a loss in two financial quarters in a row for the 1st time in your history is a sign that Sony have been relying on the brand name in the last couple of years

But I do see signs of them turning it around

The Bean won't appeal to all, but will certainly give Sony plenty of free publicity

One exception for me was definitely the Vaio Pocket. I was amazed with it's (20hr) battery life, it's clear, crisp, high resolution screen and it's sturdy, typically Sony, build quality.

I was amazed at the HD5's price, I thought it was a typo - but now I can see why we have paid so much less! The quality is just appaling :)

I've grown to love it though and can't live without music on the move - of all the manufactures out there, Sony is getting it nearest to the goalpost for me.

I am very curious to see what the next step is going to look like and what Sony has learn't from past mistakes, but personally I can't afford to fall in love with the next HD after having had to replace my HD5. I will have to try and live with my current DAP for at least a year :)

I just want a 2GB version of the NW-E107 - 1GB isn't quite enough for me. I wrote to Sony asking if they planned on releasing a 2GB player but they replied:

"...no detail of the products to be launched nor their specifications are made available (to Sony customer services or consumers) before their launch. It is therefore with regret that I am not able to provide any information on the release of a 2GB flash Walkman at this time."
