I am starting to build my first home cinema system, I currently have a pair of Linn Index speakers and have a budget of £300-£400 for an A/V receiver. Will be looking to buy sub and satellite speakers when I get the chance. I am happy to buy second hand, but is it more sensible to try and buy the newest kit for sake of warranty and future proofing my system?

    Any advice is much appreciated!

The answer depends a lot of what features you want or need. The onkyo is the better amp so will give you better sound quality but it will be lacking a lot of the newer features on the Sony. If you do not need things like 4K etc. then the Onkyo is a good option as you will have better sound quality. However, if you do need or want the new features then it can be a right pain to make it work in your system. The only issue I would have is Onkyo of that vintage do not have a great reputation on reliability of the HDMI board so I would not buy a second hand one for this reason alone.
