    Hi all

Has anyone got any experience yet of the new Sony STR-DE585 and STR-DE685 receivers? I'm looking to buy one or the other in the very near future to add to my system for surround sound at last! (STR-DE485 is a potential also, but is not as powerful)

They have just been released in the UK, but I've not yet seen any reviews. Had a quick look at them both whilst on holiday in the States, but had to resist buying as they had non-switchable 110V AC supply. Prices were annoyingly cheap!

The 685 is a bit taller, but seems to have better input / output count as well as being 'SACD tuned', whatever that means...

Any views gratefully received (hopefully before the weekend!)

    Cheers

Shame as a step up transformer is only a few pounds.

Release date for the 585 is 8th July, according to the dealer. I have one on order.

The 485 doesn't have DolbyProLogic II.

Points going for the 685 are: Digital Out, Front Av, Svid connections.

A step down/up transformer to power an amplifier will be more than a few pounds (in weight). ;)

Tired my local hi-fi shop yesterday afternoon. They have had both the 585 and 685 on order for a while now. Whilst I was there, the assistant rang Sony, and they said deliveries woudl commence 1s week of August for the 585, 2nd week for the 685.

So... do I wait and see if this is true, or go for another brand. Must have DPL II, DD, DTS, Remote, at least one co-axial digital in and cost under £300 - Any ideas???

I wonder if the dates are the same for all retailers.

Can't believe Sony. They keep pushing the dates back further and further. They were supposed to be available in June. I've been without an amp now for 2 and half months - dont know if I can cope much longer. I was all set to buy the STR DE 485 then, but found out about the new 485, 585 and 685 and decided to wait. I've even got all my speakers set up ready.

Same thing happened with the the dvd. Sony DVP NS405 - release date May. Didn't appear until mid June. Got fed up of waiting and bought the DVP NS700.

Personally DPL11 doesn't do it for me to the extent that i would sit with out an amp waiting for it.I'd have taken a 1070 for £300.

My reasoning for waiting is that DPL II seems to be a big step on from original DPL, and therefore I would rather wait. I'd love a 1070 for £300, but I've made too many wasted and phone calls and journeys Richer Sounds to find that the headline offers have sold out. I've only struck lucky once (about 8 years ago when I bought a cheap Technics tape deck - remember the days when we still used cassettes? what were we thinking)

One other point - all my other kit is Sony, and buying a matching (in terms of looks) amp was a condition of purchase from her who must be obeyed...

Wish I'd seen your other post about transformers before I went on holiday - I'd be listening to my 685 by now! Oh well, August is only a few weeks away!

I had a 585 on order. After reading your comment re availability, I became more concerned as to when I might get it.

Checked with QED, they also said early August. Therefore, I wasn't confident my dealer would have in the next couple of weeks.

Anyway, I found a retailer who had a 585 (silver) IN STOCK! Couldn't believe it! Aparrently, there was a very small batch of receivers made available to selected retailers on about 24th June.

Cost me £206.50 (inc del), which was £7.50 more than the original dealer.

Don't know whether you wanted the 585 or 685, but I'd reccomend you contact them. I dealt with Martin, who was very helpful. Picked it up from the courier depot this morning.
